TRAVEL TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Students and their parent/carers come and go from our school grounds in a variety of ways.   This week staff have had to have some reminder discussions with students about our after-school routines.

The school mobile phone guidelines (Student Code of Conduct) states that phones are only used on school grounds to message or ring parents or carers about after school arrangements. No student should be showing another student anything that is on their phone.  Taking photos of other students on a personal phone is a breach of the student privacy regulations for schools.

Bus students should go straight to the line-up area when the bell goes. After getting a drink or going to the toilet they should be on their bus line ready for roll marking and instructions from the bus duty staff member.

Students at Stop Drop Go should be watching for their pick-up and listening for their name from gate staff.

Use of the Bicycle Shed requires students having a Bike Shed permission form.  The Student Code of Conduct applies to travel to and from school.  All students should be behaving in safe and respectful way towards themselves and others.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The Interhouse Swimming Carnival will take place on Thursday, 1 December at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre.  The Carnival is for students born in 2014 and older.  Families have received details and permission notes by email.  Year 6 parents/carers, please note that 1 December is the first of two BSHS Transition days for enrolled students (1-2 December).  Students can make a choice about which to attend. Due to the changed format at the High School, there is an unavoidable clash. After discussions with BSHS transition staff, I have been advised that there is no disadvantage to only attending 1 day, as so many of our students have taken advantage of earlier transition opportunities such as the CEEP days.

END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES

The Annual Awards Presentation Parade for Years 1-5 will take place on 5 December at 9:00am.  These awards are Academic and Most Improved for Years 1-6 along with Citizenship for Years 3-6.  It is a tradition of our school that students are not advised ahead of the parade if they are getting an award.  Parents/carers will be contacted in Week 9 and invited to attend if their student is receiving an award. This event will also include Sports Reports from the House Captains and the awarding of the Champion House for 2022.  Parents/carers of 2022 Sports Captains are invited to attend this parade.

Year 6 Graduation will take place on Tuesday, 6 December commencing at 6:30pm.  The doors will open at 6:00pm.   This year, we do not have to a Health and Safety requirement to manage guest numbers.  The event is for students and their families, which may include extended family such as grandparents. We will be asking for RSVPs from Year 6 families to assist a seating set up that supports social distancing.

FACILITIES UPDATE

The school has been successful in obtaining a grant to install a digital sign; and with an additional donation from the P&C Association it is planned that this will be installed for the start of the 2023 school year.

2023 UPDATE

Our projected enrolment for 2023 from Prep-6 is approximately 217 students.  This will mean a plan of 9 classes after 10 classes this year.  Further details will be in the Week 9 newsletter ahead of class placement notes being sent home with students in Week 10.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS

Well done to Concert Band who did a great job at the Beerwah Street Party.

HODC Report

We are rapidly moving into the assessment phase of our teaching and learning cycle for Term Four. On top of all the other things that occur during Term Four, this can lead to some students feeling anxious or stressed. Often when we ask ‘how was your day?’ we can get the answer ‘good’, and not much else! This makes it very difficult to gauge how they are really going.

Sometimes it can be useful to change the question slightly so it prompts more of a conversation. For example:

“What was your favourite part of the day?”…. “Why?”

“What is something that you learnt new today?”

“What was something challenging for you today?”… “how did you overcome it?”

K-HUB PERFORMANCE

Our choir did a great job representing the Kandoo kids of Beerwah at the K-Hub wishing tree opening. A big thank-you to Mrs Rae for her hard work growing our choir to over 70 children!

Matt Deady (HODC)

MOVEMBER

A brave group of teachers is taking on Movember this year. This is a great cause which raises awareness and funds for men’s mental health charities. Our team is called ‘Beardwah’. These progress photos are from about 10 days of mo-gress.

To make a donation you can go to this link: Beardwah

. We are also looking for other men in the school community who’d like to join the Beardwah team! You can go to the link above and sign up to join our team.

SKOOLBAG REMINDER

We have received reports of some users not being able to log into the SkoolBag Admin Console. We believe some users may be trying to access the old link. Please ensure that you update your bookmarks and shortcuts to the following login page:  Skoolbag Console
REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
  • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
  • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.
QKR! How to Guide

QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.

  • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
  • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
  • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
  • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

Other Reports

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

P&C Report

P&C MEETINGS

The final P&C meeting of Term 4 & 2022 will be held next Monday, 21 November at 6:00pm in our Resource Centre Library. Please come along and meet our small and caring team. If you can’t join in person, you can always ZOOM in. Email pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au to get the link.

VOLUNTEERING

As stated on the mid-term P&C newsletter that was sent home, some of our members will be moving on next year so we are looking for new P&C members. Without the parent volunteers, we cannot offer all of the services & events we have been (Tuckshop, Uniform Shop, Book Club etc). There are lots of little things that are simple to do from home if you can’t come into school. It’s tricky balancing our busy lives but with more helpers, we share the roles to make it easier for everyone.  Please get in touch if you are considering joining us.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

Specific volunteer needs:

-          Tuckshop assistance – Tuesday 10:00am-1:00pm (or earlier if possible)

-          School colour run spectacular – Friday, 25 November – we need lots of volunteers (15yrs +) 1:00am-3:00pm

FACEBOOK PAGE

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. It’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification.

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C. Just find our page and like us to start following. BSS P&C Facebook page

EVENTS & FUNDRAISING

Colour Run

We are only a week away from the much-loved COLOUR RUN!  Fundraising closes Friday, 18 November & any cash donations need to be handed in to the Office by 3pm. Online fundraising closes at 11.59pm. All children are required to wear a white t-shirt for the run. as we can’t see the colours on their uniform! We have obstacles planned, the slime pit, and a cool off from the Rural Fire Brigade. Friday, 25 November – come and join the fun!

We still need more volunteers to make this event one to remember. Please get in touch if you can help from 1:00pm.

Christmas Raffle

Our Christmas raffle tickets will be sent home with children next week, there are some great prizes, keep an eye out.

WORKING BEE

We will resume our working bees next year in term one. We plan to hold them every 2nd Saturday of term from 9:00am-12:00pm, so it’s just a small amount of effort for a huge return in our wonderful school grounds and appearance. Isn’t it lovely to wander past native flowering plants as you engage with the school? Our children can learn so much from nature and helping it along with a little effort is a great way to connect with other parents, and great for our own wellbeing by connecting with nature. Come along and try next year! Plus, your children will get recognition for volunteering with a new P&C reward system.

RECYCLING PROGRAM

P&C have registered with Terracycle as a collection/drop-off point for various things that normally don’t get recycled. Currently there is a box in the library for the collection of old pens and stationery that no longer works (not pencils). Take a look to see what can be included.

We also have a box for old dental products to get recycled. Sponsored by Colgate, please recycle your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, dental floss packets, and electric toothbrush heads.

Visit Terracycle to find out more. Over time we’ll add more boxes to recycle other products. Items can be dropped off anytime the Library is open. Boxes are beside the window.

It’s a wonderful initiative to reduce our landfill and look after our environment. As an added bonus, P&C will receive funds as we send off our recycling donations. I encourage you to reduce your landfill and contribute to our recycling program. It makes sense for the planet, sense for the P&C, and sense for your environmental conscience.

 Carolyn Brewer (P&C President)

TUCKSHOP

The Tuckshop will be open on Tuesday each week unless otherwise announced on Skoolbag & Facebook. We haven’t been able to offer the meal deals as planned due to volunteer shortages.

In Week 10 there will be a Pizza Meal Deal to coincide with the Swimming Disco. Look out for notes about this to be sent home.

As the term end draws closer, we will be depleting stocks for the holidays. If an item is not available on Qkr! then it is no longer available. We apologise for the inconvenience.

We will gradually develop a schedule for meal deals, if parents or children have ideas, please email them to pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au. This is also who to contact if you need to change a menu item for your child, as there is no opportunity to add comments in Qkr!

Click here to order online or download the Qkr! app on your mobile device.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop will open each Wednesday afternoon 2:30-3:00pm, or at other times by appointment. The best way to order uniforms is ONLINE via Qkr! It’s quick & easy & there are no transaction fees

Alternatively, an order form can be collected from the Office. Items will then be sent home with the student or can be collected from the Office.

To ensure orders are processed quickly, once you have placed an online order, please send your details to pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
