A message from our Principal

Education Week

As you may be aware, this week is Education Week and schools all across NSW will be celebrating the achievements of their students and the hard work of their staff. This year, the theme is 'Learning together'. To mark this event, while our normal parent visits are not permitted, WWSPS staff and students have worked extremely hard in creating a showcase of our positive attitude towards school in what is a very unusual time. Keep your eye on the WWSPS Facebook page this week because……We’re all in this together!

Athletics Carnival

Planning our annual school athletics carnival has proven quite difficult in 2020. Despite the current restrictions, we are still permitted to hold a carnival, though it will take on a different format to what we are used to. As you know, our carnival will not be an open event for parents this year, which we know is disappointing, but nevertheless, it is what we must do to ensure that our students are getting the experience and that we are meeting guidelines. All students are expected to attend the carnival and please be reminded that all students are expected travel to and from the venue by bus.

Communication Methods

Our school uses a wide range of communication tools to ensure that families are aware of details and organisation within our school. Classroom teachers regularly use SeeSaw and ClassDojo to communicate class specific information. This is done to various degrees across the stages. While the staff are very willing to respond to questions and requests, please remember that they are not always able to do this between 8.30am and 3.30pm, due to face to face teaching commitments and playground duties etc. As has always been the case, if you have an urgent need to contact your child’s teacher or the school in relation to any matter, a phone call to the office is still the most effective and immediate method. Where at all possible, phone calls will be responded to at the next break (i.e. recess or lunch) or at the end of the school day.

Congratulations

A big congratulations to Mrs Cullen and Mr Jarrett who this week have been awarded Education Week Excellence in Teaching Certificates. Both of these people are very highly valued by everyone in our school community. Mrs Cullen received her award for outstanding teaching practice in K-2 Science and for her ongoing enthusiasm, passion and commitment to our school over many years. Mr Jarrett's award was for his dedicated 4 year commitment to the care and development of our kindergarten students. On behalf of the whole school community, congratulations and thank you for your outstanding contributions to our school.

Have a great week everyone,

Matt Barr

Principal

Jeans for Genes Day - Wednesday, 12th August 2020

Next Wednesday the 12th we are celebrating Jeans for Genes Day at Woy Woy South! Students are encouraged to wear their Jeans and make a small donation for a very good cause, the Childrens' Medical Research Institute who research cures for genetic illnesses in children.

If students don't have anything 'jeansey' they can wear, they are very welcome to wear general mufti, remembering that standard mufti day rules are in place; school hat, covered midriff and sensible appropriate shoes.

A gold coin donation is generously appreciated!

Did you know that 1 in 20 kids face a birth defect or genetic disease, and 30% of children’s hospital admissions are due to genetic disorders, so we know there is still much work to be done.

Look forward to seeing everyone denimed up next Wednesday!

Southern Central Coast Athletics Carnival - Friday, 11th September 2020

I am sure everyone is aware that we are lucky enough to be having our school Athletics Carnival next Thursday. Plans are also well underway for the Southern Central Coast Athletics Carnival to take place on Friday the 11th of September at Mingara Athletics Centre. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students at Woy Woy South PS to represent our school given a number of events have been cancelled this year due to COVID 19.

Unfortunately, like our school carnival, parents will not  be unable to attend the Southern Central Coast Athletics Carnival due to government imposed restrictions. A coach has been booked to transport the students selected to and from the event. Please be aware that the carnival will be run a little bit different to previous years and qualification to compete at the event has changed. If there are any questions about this please direct these to Mr Waight.

Changes to Kindergarten 2021 Information Session.

K-2 Science Fun with Ms Cullen!

Positive Behaviour of Learning

Week 3 – PBL Focus – Be a Learner

This week our whole school PBL focus is showing Respect, Responsibility and Relationships ‘In the Classroom’.

At our school we are learning that the teacher’s job is to teach and the student’s job is to learn. When we all step into the classroom we need to show respect to our teachers and other students. We are all learning to let our classmates listen and complete their activities. Showing respect for each other allows everyone to do their best.

MS Readathon

Woy Woy South PS is participating in the MS Read-A-Thon this term. The MS Read-a-thon inspires kids to read as much as they can, for a great cause. Students can read whatever they like, as much as they like, in August. This year’s MS Read-a-thon begins on August 1st and wraps up on August 31st.

Some WWS teachers have signed up their classes and students can register to join their class through https://www.msreadathon.org.au/register/2020/child. If your student’s class has not registered yet, you can still join our school through this link and help us promote a love of reading, whilst supporting a worthwhile cause.

So far we have raised over $2000. A huge congratulations to the 39 students who have signed up and started receiving donations already. What amazing selfless students we have at WWSPS!

Thank you for your involvement, Happy reading!

      School Banking

Woy Woy South is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way to help young Australians practice good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through school banking will earn an exciting reward every time they reach ten deposits.

The rewards available so far in 2020 include:

      • Terry Denton’s Activity Book
      • Mini soccer ball (size 2)
      • Treetop stationary set
      • Treetop handball
      • Tomato seed kit
      • Magic mist drink bottle

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5.00 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an annual contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
