Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Week 2

Principal Updates

It was terrific to see so many smiley faces back on deck at school, last week - everyone got settled back quite quickly and engaged in their learning. Class teachers are sending letters home by the end of this week outlining the main aspects of their programmes for this term as well as outlining the usual expectations and providing a heads up about with upcoming events. These will be shared with families via email as usual.

Year 3/4 Camp

Initial notes went home last week for parents / carers of students in Years 3 and 4 regarding their camp to The Territory Wildlife Park for September 8th and 9th. Please ensure you return your intention to the office within the timeframe, so we can proceed with our planning.

Year 6 Orientation Day at Dripstone Middle School

On Thursday 11th August all Year 6 students are invited [and expected to attend] to Year 6 Orientation day at Dripstone Middle School. They will be accompanied by Mrs Baines and Mrs Wedel.

Alawa Student Commissioners

Yesterday the Alawa Student Commissioners participated in the launch of the video.

I have tested positive with COVID over the long weekend so unfortunately will be in isolation all this week - not feeling too bad so will engage as much as feasible from home via web meetings etc. I am still available via email.

Have a great week,

Sandy Cartwright [Principal]

Assistant Principal Update

Welcome to Week 2. I hope you had a lovely long weekend. I certainly enjoyed another lovely break with my family and friends. The children were super excited to be back with their friends and quickly engaged in learning. Term 3 is certainly a time of the year where the children all know the rules and routines of a classroom and quickly settle into learning.

It has been a very busy week this week with several teachers away as well as our Sandy our Principal. Fortunately she has not been too unwell at this stage and of course still working as much as she can. All staff are working together to continue all activities and learning and run a super school. Any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me.

PEP Talks: Sandy and I will be visiting each class in the next couple of weeks for our PEP talks. This is an excellent time that we have with each of the classes to focus on our school values, this term events and having a Growth Mindset. Due to the fact that our ALLE tools have been updated we will also have a strong focus on what they are and what they mean with our learning. These include: Collaborate, Communicate, Problem solve, Persist and Reflect. You will notice that the early years classes will be coming home with little badges which shows we are focusing on Collaborate this term. After viewing the feedback from the children last term the focus for early years is how we can identify what we are good at and how we can improve. This includes, looking at the word walls, setting goals, asking for help, practicing at home and at school and many more ideas that we brainstorm together.

Have a lovely week and enjoy another fabulous long weekend with our holiday next Monday.

Kind regards

Gen Donohue [Assistant Principal]

NED's Mindset Mission

Our school is hosting NED’s Mindset Mission, a live streaming school

event. An engaging performer takes our students on an interactive

educational journey filled with storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humour.

NED’s message and memorable friends inspire students, promote academic

achievement, and support our school goals.

Never give up Encourage others Do your best®

Our school received this programme at no-cost because another school community has paid-it-forward to us. Now it’s our turn—you can help by purchasing a NED-messaged yo-yo and accessories. A yo-yo is both a mindset tool and tangible reminder of NED’s message. While learning to yo, children will make mistakes, try again, and improve. Read more at www.MindsetMission.com/yoyos

*Items will be on sale at the front office from 25th July-8th August.

Learning Commission

Last Term the Federal Government  Online Formative Assessment Initiative team visited our school and met with our Student Commissioners to unpack with them what they feel they need in terms of assessment and how to make their learning and feedback more meaningful. This is to inform the Federal Government Education agenda. During the visit a recording was made and this has now been compiled after visits to a few other NT schools and will be presented to education ministers and senior government officials this Friday.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to view the video and provide feedback.

Once again Alawa Student Commissioners shone with their ability to articulate their thinking, take ownership of their learning and showcase their skills as 21st Century learners.

Stay tuned and we will share the video via Facebook in the coming week.

Volunteers needed: Breakfast club

This term we are asking for parent volunteers to assist teachers with Breakfast Club. This will be particularly important during Weeks 7 and 9 when teachers are busy with our whole school performance preparations and student led conferences. Volunteer support is required from 7:50 until 8:20 each Thursday morning and involves set up, preparing toast, serving cereal, cutting fruit and packing up.

Mr Wilson will be at breakfast club each week to help coordinate any support. If you are interested in helping, please let Mr Wilson know by visiting his classroom in Year One or via email at nathan.wilson6@education.nt.gov.au [don’t forget the 6]. You can also use this QR code to add your name to the breakfast club roster for Term 3. Just remember to mark the week you will assist.

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 1 of Term 3 was....Year 1 Wilson with 71 points!!!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 1 of Term 3 Manton was ahead of Finnis and Goyder with 2232 points!!!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 62012 points!!!

Attendance: Term 2 at Alawa

As can be seen from the graph to the side we had 45% of our students attend less than 90% last term - this is very serious and detrimental to the students learning.

In fact we even had 18% attend less than 80% - this means 57 children missed more than 10 days of school through the term. Now we know COVID and Influenza was a significant contributor to these statistics - they are not the full story.

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 1 Term 3: 85.86%

It will be terrific seeing more of our families attend daily.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 1: Year 5/6 Henderson with 95.80%!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 17 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 1 Term 3!

For Week 1 the classes with the least lates were: Year 1 Bullock, Year 2 Ward, Year 4/5 Griffin and Year 5/6 Henderson with 0 lates each!!!
