From the Principal

Mrs Fillery

I will be taking some leave this next week, completing the very last assessment for my Masters degree and spending some time at a family celebration.

Welcome back and thank you to Mrs Ellen Mead for stepping into my place. Looking forward to catching up with everyone on my return!

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Thank you all for the wonderful messages and thoughts sent through to teachers on Friday for World Teachers Day. The vocation of being a primary school educator is a complex one. Primary educators have the important job of preparing students for their secondary phase of education and they often don’t have the satisfaction of seeing the fruits of their labour when they graduate Year 12. Although 2022 wasn’t a ‘Covid Year’ as such, our school, along with schools in the region and the state, are continuing to feel the impact of Covid residue. In 2022, our school has also welcomed all of our students into classrooms and this has been supported by our wonderful staff. Peachester has some of the best teachers in the system and we are so very lucky to have them attached to our school.

Day for Daniel

It is hard to believe that it has been close to 20 years since the events occurred that created the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. As well as wearing red last Friday our students engaged in age appropriate activities to build their confidence and consciousness of ways they can keep themselves and others safe. Increasingly, as our wider community continues to evolve in the digital space, we need to constantly engage with and review children’s safety and stewardship in their very connected world. Please ensure they are aware of family expectations when using the internet, and as they grow and mature, that they have the same positive sense of self within the digital world as they do in the real world.  I fully understand the challenges that this presents within a family environment.

Supporting a successful transition to school

Term 4 is a particularly busy term for prep transition and orientation events. Starting school is an important milestone in a child's life, with many children revelling in the changes and challenges during their transition to school.

There are many ways we can support our children to have a great start to school — from using kindy transition statements to sharing practical ideas about starting school.

Education Queensland’s Transition to school campaign raises awareness among families about the transition statement and how it supports a great start to school. Short videos will feature on digital and social media channels, and articles, tips and downloadable resources for parents can be found on The Early Years Count website.

If you have preppies starting school with us in 2023, I would encourage you to visit the site above. Your child’s transition statement is a valuable source of information, for not only you but also for the school. We encourage you to pass on your child’s transition statement to the school, either through your kindergarten facility or personally to the school

Tuckshop Thanks

The thousands of tireless tuckshop workers in Queensland schools are unsung heroes, so on the first Friday in November each year, they get a collective pat on the back during Tuckshop Day.

Sometimes we forget to notice the important contribution tuckshop volunteers make to the everyday operation of schools. Tuckshop Day is the day to promote our amazing school tuckshop and say thanks to the workers for their hard work.

I would like to encourage each and every one of you to officially acknowledge and thank our fabulous tuckshop convenor, Jess Brauns,  and all the amazing and dedicated volunteers for the valuable role they play in the school life of our students at Peachester State School.

We should remember to say please and thank you every week, but on Tuckshop Day, Friday 4th November, we said a very special thank you to this wonderful team.

We don’t take their hard work for granted.  I would encourage parents who may have some spare time to consider volunteering in the tuckshop.  Many hands make light work.

Technic Brix

What a champion effort by our Robotics team, lead by Mr Matt Schmidt and Mrs Robertson and supported by all the parents who also put in massive hours into ensuring our team was robot-ready!

On Saturday 29 October, Kuljan, Ashton, Micah, Oscar, Isabelle and Makenzie represented us at the Robotics First Lego League Comp at Suncoast Christian College. The team was very successful, being awarded 2 trophies :

Rising Star Award - celebrates the team that the judges notice and expect great things from in the future.

Robot Performance Award - celebrates the team that scores the most points during the robot games.

Our team is fortunate to have sponsorship that had made it possible to compete. Thank you to:

Responsive support for students with disability

The Department of Education has released a new resource allocation model for students with disability, replacing the Education Adjustment Program (EAP).

The Students with disability – Reasonable adjustments resourcing (RAR) model provides additional teachers and teacher aides to help schools make reasonable adjustments for students with disability. RAR provides resources for all disabilities including autism, intellectual disability, vision, hearing and physical impairments as well as dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and mental health conditions — based on the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability adjustment levels.

This means we can receive support for students who may not have been recognised under the EAP. We will transition to the new model over the next two years — 2023 and 2024 — and by 2025 all state and special schools will be resourced, based on the adjustments schools report making for students with disability.

Prep News

Finally, after all of our learning – phonemic awareness, phonics, letter formation, sentence writing with spaces and punctuation – we have written our book about Pat.

The first page we wrote together, the second we tried a little on our own and the last page the students wrote independently.

They are every proud of their books.

Year 1 News

This Week in Year 1

Many parents will be aware that we have been studying procedures in our English Unit in Year 1 this term.

This week we were joined by both of our classroom neighbours (Year 5/6 and the Preps) to witness a presentation by Mr. Laurence as he showed us how to set up his steel drum.  This visit proved very exciting due to the fact that there are a few parts of the steel drum kit (materials) and some steps to set up a steel drum in order to play (method).  Mr. Laurence then played us a brief tune on the steel drum and our guests then danced their way back to class leaving us to write a procedure of the setting up.

Many thanks to Mr. Laurence for creating a real-life opportunity for our procedural writing skills to be developed. Anyone who would like to set up a steel drum kit can ask us and we can give you a copy of the procedure to follow.  Enjoy!

Until next newsletter!

Regards Ms. Viv and Year 1 students 😊

Year 2/3 News

In 2/3 we have been working extremely hard on our Science presentations.

Our presentations contain information about how day and night occur, as well as explaining the difference between sunrise and sunset. We use diagrams with pictures and labels to help explain what is happening.

We have also been enjoying going to our swimming lessons on Tuesdays! We all have a great time practicing our swimming and learning some new strokes.

Year 3/4 News

This week in year 3 and 4, students have been hard at work designing cereal boxes. They were not required to be healthy so there are some very creative cereals.

The students are then required to write a speech to convince consumers to buy their product.

It has been great to see the students using all the techniques they have learnt so far to write and design a very persuasive product.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Rewards Day

“On Friday the 4th of the 11th 2022 we had the Premier’s Reading Challenge rewards afternoon. It was really fun.  We played duck, duck, goose, but we played it with water, so it was drip, drip, drop! instead. We did a water race where you had a sponge and you had to fill the bucket at the other end. We did under ‘n overs with a cup of water and threw the sponge through the hole. My favourite was drip drip drop. It was so much fun I had a great time!” Sophie

“It was good. I liked how we got to do a relay with the sponges to fill the bucket. I liked the Drip Drip Drop! game because it was fun and we got to drop water on everyone’s head” Abby.

“My favourite activity was the sponge game because I threw a bucket of water on Mr Laurence. My other favourite activity was the drip drip drop one. I got a drop on me, the water was very cold” Tynisha

“It was really fun! I liked the duck, duck, goose water game because it was funny how people were chasing each other.” Sevennah

“My favourite game was the one where you had to shoot the cars with the water guns cos it was kinda like a relay. The first team who got to 6 laps won.” Violet

“My favourite game was the drip, drip, drop.  I thought it was really fun because you got to dump water out of a cup on people’s heads!” Ruby

Year 6 Big Day Out is Monday of week 10. Notes will be coming home soon.
