Dear Parent/Carers

As we draw near to the end of Week 2 Term 3 we have so many curricular and extra-curricular event to be proud of. (Athletics Carnival, Creative Generations, University of QLD-Wonders of Science, Chinchilla Career Expo, University of QLD Youth Ambassador to name a few. Please enjoy our newsletter which will share with you the learning and outcomes of each of these events.

Many Thanks

I cannot let this newsletter go out without a big shout-out and thank you to our canteen convener Shelley Gilby and her very supportive and talented team. Over the last two weeks along with the usual twice daily canteen operation Shelley and her band of volunteers have catered for parents/carers and students at the Miles SHS Athletics Carnival, over 130 staff and students at Wonders of Science event (Miles SHS hosted 6 surrounding schools) and 20 parents and students at UQ Youth Ambassador Program. What an amazing feat by all. These catering events assist in obtaining funds for our Miles SHS P&C which assist in funding valuable resources and support for our school.

Homework Centre

I am pleased to see the increased numbers of students accessing The Miles SHS Homework Centre. This twice a week resource is provided to our students to allow time and support by a teacher and teacher aid to complete homework activities, assignments, or activities that support school-based learning plans.

Our Homework Centre’s aim is to support students’ learning, development and engagement in school, while forging a strong and supportive link between home and school. I encourage families to utilise this resource at no extra cost to our families.

Miles State High School Homework Centre Times:- Monday and Wednesday 3:00-4:30pm. Please contact the office on 46285111 if you wish your child to attend this valuable educational support for your child.

Reminder Student/Parent/Carer/Teacher Interview

A reminder to parents that next Wednesday 27 July is our Miles SHS Student/Parent/Teacher Evening. Interviews are  another excellent demonstration of  Miles State High School Partners in Learning but an excellent opportunity for students, parent/carers  and teachers to meet and share explicit student feedback that will assist students to achieve greater success. So please date claim the evening, its not too late to book in a time for you and your child to  join our teachers as they provide feedback to celebrate current success and support your child’s future learning outcomes.

Farewell Mr Van Zyl

As we know our staff journey to us, make an impact on our students and wider school community then often must journey on.

Today is Mr Van Zyl’s last day at Miles SHS as he and his family will now embark on their next journey.

Mr Van Zyl is known to all students as a Maths, Science, Care, Furnishing, Junior Secondary Technology and Engineering Teacher in all year levels.

Throughout his journey with us he has become a well-respected member of our team. He is always responsive to student’s needs, while working with their parent/caregivers providing support to increase students well-being and achievement outcomes.

I know you all join me as I wish Mr Van Zyl and his family the very best as he embarks on the next phase of his career.

Many thanks …………………

Take care,

Josette Moffatt

From Head of Curriculum

The first two weeks have disappeared quickly and the students are well into their units of work.  Big shout out to all of the competitors of the Sports Carnival and everyone involved.  This event was followed by some excellent teamwork in the Wonders of Science in Week 2 and congratulations to Miss Jenko and her students from Yr 7 and 8 for their participation and we wish them success as they head to Brisbane in November.

Mr Duncan and myself had the opportunity to partake in the 2022 DEi Global Future Conference.  Sharing curriculum ideas and pedagogy on how to support students, staff, families and communities in a world that is constantly changing with how we live, learn and work.  Developing and adapting to the unknown, connecting and collaborating in different ways to creatively solve unique problems was the focus of the conference.  We are excited to share with students, staff, parents and the wider community.

Week 3 will be busy with Parent / Teacher Interviews and it is an excellent time to meet and discuss the next step/s for our students.  The Term 3 placemats and planners will be emailed out and some available at the meeting.  This resource allows parents to view when key work is required across the curriculum for their student.  It also allows families to view the variety of content their student is learning in their year level.  I would like to extend a thank you to all the staff and their commitment in supporting students and families by providing this valuable resource every term.

Letters will be going out in the next fortnight to our Yr 10 students with information on their Set Plan and subject selection for 2023.

From Head of Wellbeing & Engagement

Welcome to Term 3 and halfway through another school year.

We are in for a busy Term here at Miles SHS. Senior students are in the middle of preparing for the final stages in their schooling as well as organising their formal, so best wishes to everyone.

Upon return from the school holidays, the students have settled back into routine quickly and effectively. There are still some minor behaviour incidents that we need to control, these are as follows:

  • Non-compliant with routine
  • Verbal misconduct
  • Truancy

Students at Miles SHS are expected to follow the rules and expectations of the school and their classroom teachers. There has also been an increase in swearing and use of inappropriate language within the school. Furthermore, truancy is beginning to rise both from not attending classes and leaving school without permission.

Thank you for the parent support as we try and minimise these behaviours.

Enjoy Term 3 and strive to achieve your best potential 🙂

From Head of Inclusion, Teaching and Engagement

Welcome back to Term 3. I have had the pleasure of meeting with Autism Queensland this week and have discovered some great strategies to support our students with Autism. I look forward to doing some goal setting and future planning with students over the following weeks to ensure a clear and motivating view of the future moving forward. It is so important for our students to have goals and a future pathway to work towards and motivate them. I am excited to hear their ideas and dreams and help them work towards them.

I hope everyone has had a great start to Term 3 and I look forward to a positive term ahead.

What's happening in the Miles SHS P&C???

A big thank you to our P&C Tuckshop convenor Shelley for organising the Tuckshop for the Athletics Carnival and getting her band of helpers to assist. Huge thank you to Toni Brown for preparing and cooking the mains, the fried rice was amazing!

Big Thanks to - Janine – Serving, Nuffy for assisting in the setup, Jodie McKellar for preparation of sandwiches, Jess Gorry – serving all day and Sandy Crook – serving and clean up.

Also thank you to our band of parents/carers who provided Home baked goods - Nicole Harrison, Kath Thomas, Toni Brown, Laura Ferguson and Jane Nixon.

While some parents were assisting Shelley, others were assisting Mr Kuhl at the time keeping tent. Thank you to Claire York, Nuffy Little, Polly, and to all other parents and carers who assisted the carnival in any way.

Many thanks everyone, your assistance was greatly appreciated by all, but especially by the students to help make their day enjoyable.

Wonder of Science

MSHS again received the privilege to host the Wonder of Science conference on Wednesday 20th July. The P&C was asked to provide the catering, this isn’t a small job with 108 students to feed along with 23 teachers to provide both morning tea and lunch.  A BIG shout out to Shelley and Toni Brown for working hard to coordinate this, preparing and serving the food.

Cheers Polly

Wonder of Science Conference

On Wednesday, Miles SHS welcomed guests from Wonder of Science, plus students and teachers from Meandarra SS, Drillham SS, Dalby South SS, Taroom SS, Tara Shire SS and six students from Miles SHS. Students participated in two team building workshops where they had to build insects to suit a certain environment and build the tallest tower using only spaghetti and marshmallows. The students then did two rounds of presentations, where they shared their findings on a topic they have been researching and experimenting on for the last term and a bit. The year 7 team chose the topic of ‘Which launch angle gives the longest horizontal flight’ and the year 8 chose the topic of ‘Wonderous Water’ where they looked at density and buoyancy. Miss Jenko and Miles SHS is very proud of Talia, Bill, Luke, Harry, Katie and Asher who participated in the competition, with both teams placing FIRST in their age groups. Both teams will be heading to State Conference in November, where they will compete against other winning teams from around the state. Miles SHS would like to thank the P&C for organising, cooking and serving lunch, the other schools involved and Wonder of Science. Without everyone’s involvement the day would not have been possible. We wish Talia, Bill, Luke, Harry, Katie and Asher all the best at State Conference.

Miss Jenko

Chinchilla Careers Expo

On Wednesday 20th July our Year 10, 11 and 12 students attended the Chinchilla Careers Expo at the Chinchilla Showgrounds. Students had the opportunity to interact with approximately 50 different businesses and education organisations.

Year 8 Life Skills

This term 8A are doing Life Skills as one of their electives. During this week the students have worked on their team building skills with games and a STEM challenge of trying to build the tallest tower out of spaghetti and blue tac. Throughout the rest of the term students will build on many different skills, including time management, organisation, communication and more. Students have also asked to learn about budgeting and Sign language, which will both be looked at throughout the term. 8A and Miss Jenko look forward to showing everyone the work completed throughout the term.

Miss Jenko

Term 3

Year 7 English

In English, we've been expanding our knowledge of abstract nouns. Students have created fantastic digital posters to display in our classrooms for all to learn from and be able to reference.

Mrs Klimo

Year 9 Humanities

In Yr 9 Humanities, the students were given a task yesterday to create a poster based on Biomes. In pairs or a group of three, they needed to research, create a poster that provided information on Biomes - climate, vegetation, and animal life. It was up to the students on how they presented their poster. Mrs Derksen and Ms Bates took the class and were delighted with the creativity of all the groups. Mrs Moffatt came up and chose the winners of Stage 1. Ingrid Young and Rahnee Little won the girls section and Ben Moore, and Daniel Igiraneza won the boy section. In Friday's lesson, the students will complete their poster and an overall winner will be announced.

Congratulations to all the students for wonderful teamwork and problem-solving skills displayed during the lesson.

School Opinion Survey

Have your say. The School Opinion Survey gives students, school staff and parents/caregivers the opportunity to provide feedback about their school.

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.

An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July.  The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.  Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it.  The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.

Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey.

Travelling safely to and from school

The health, safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and school community is of the highest priority. Please convey this important message to your school staff and students, as a reminder about taking care when travelling to and from school.  All types of travel have inherent risks. Regardless of how any of us travel, it’s important we are mindful of the potential risks and manage them to avoid incidents and injuries. With the increasing use of rideables such as electric scooters, skateboards and bikes, ensuring the safety of your staff, students and pedestrians is essential. Please note that Queensland Road Rules apply to e-scooters and e-bikes. Anyone who scoots, rides or skates to and from school should:

  • Wear protective gear and a helmet, which is mandatory if riding an electric scooter or skateboard
  • Give way by ringing your bell when approaching pedestrians and overtaking on the right
  • Travel at the appropriate and safe speed for the environment in which you are travelling
  • Be respectful to pedestrians and other path users and keep out of their way
  • Adhere to road rules when riding an e-scooter
  • Park responsibly to avoid becoming an obstacle or risk for others.
