2022 Term 3 Issue 7

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Welcome to Term 3, I hope you all enjoyed your break after what was a busy end to Term 2. Staff and students were thrilled to be able to invite parents back into the classrooms for Learning Expo to share their learning from the term, thank you to everyone that was able to attend. Morialta Day is always a much anticipated day of the year and students along with staff and families enjoyed hiking, playing on the playground, organised games and the sausage sizzle. Then on the last day of term the students were very excited to come to school in their PJ’s and watch a movie. Thank you to Stella, Tori, Willa, Annie, Nora and Charlotte who wrote letters to the local supermarkets for donations for their hot chocolate fundraiser, they raised $125 for the RSPCA.

It has been wonderful to see the students return to school excited for the term ahead. Classes have begun working on their new topic of Inquiry “We are connected through people, place and culture”. Everyone is looking forward to the excursion on the 18th August to see “Home”, this theme will then be explored with connection to Country and what that might mean to First Nations people and our students. The Primary classes will be writing biographies about prominent First Nations people while the Junior classes are reading stories about contemporary First Nations children and their lives. We are also pleased to reintroduce Home Groups without the previous covid restrictions, this means that students are working in Reception to Year 6 mixed classes in the areas of Dance, Drama, Music and Kitchen Garden.

This week you should receive an email or SMS from the Parent Survey Team with a unique link to participate in the survey. If you did not receive an email or SMS with your unique survey link, contact education.ParentSurvey@sa.gov.au and include our school’s name in your email. The survey takes less than 10 minutes and will help us understand what we’re doing well, where we can improve and what’s important to you. Your answers will not identify you or your child. Only collated feedback will be provided to our school. Information collected will inform school improvement planning and activities at the school. The survey closes 5pm Sunday 28 August.

Kind regards,

Chantal 😊

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

News from Primary!

This term we are learning how to write a Biography; bio - meaning life, graph - meaning to write, record or draw.

So far we have learnt the structure of a biography, what sort of information does or does not get included and how it is different from other types of texts.

Our learning goal is for students to work in partners (one from Laura's class and one from Lauren's class) to write a biography about a First Nations Person of their choosing.

Maths

Both Primary classes are learning about time in Maths. Laurens class were given the task to sort time words from shortest amount of time to the largest amount of time. We had an interesting discussion about what a ‘moment’ means.

"A moment is not a specific amount of time and is often said but not known how long" – Aaron

"I enjoyed learning about what a lunar month and a galaxy year is. A lunar month is equal to 29.5 days and this is the time it takes the moon to complete is phases. A galaxy year is equal to 230 million earth years" – Jaxon

Juniors

Hello from the Juniors!

This term our central idea for our Inquiry learning is: We are connected through people, place and culture. The focus will be on learning about the special connection First Nation's Peoples have to their country and culture and reflecting on our own connections. The school has a fantastic new resource called Our Land, Our Stories that is guiding our exploration of this topic. The children have been very excited to start this topic as we learn about contemporary First Nations children and their lives. We are learning language through a Torres Strait Island's song 'Taba Naba' which is about going to the reef.

Here are some pictures of Josie's family from the Torres Strait Islands and our families, biographies of Josie, our interpretation of a painting and our first ideas about the meaning of the central idea.
