Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Book Week has been operating since 1946 and celebrates the importance of reading for pleasure. All students from Campus enjoyed the festivities of dressing up, parading, meeting authors, participating in quizzes, attending the disco and much more. Through the implementation of Literacy Pro our Year 3 - 7 students who have achieved reading level 28 have participated in a quiz to receive their Lexile number. Books in our library are categorised into Lexiles and Hajnalka Molloy supports students to find a book that interests them within a 50 point scale of their lexile level. This program and process aims to increase the engagement and enjoyment of our students in their reading. This encourages our students to focus on reading and enjoy it as an enjoyable experience. A child is never too old to read to, listen to them read or chat to them about the books they are reading. Take time to do this with your children, reading can take you to many places and enable you to enjoy many experiences from the past, present or future.
Our community is important to us and we value each and every member. It is important to us that we develop the skills in our students to become valuable community members who continue to care for each other and respect our environment. Our Campus Student Leadership Team along with students in T15 Ms Hood’s class have been researching information and conducting audits on litter found within our school yard and the effects this has on our environment. I have also been reading about a school in Melbourne who have removed all of the bins in their classrooms and yards to encourage their students to take their waste with them and move towards producing no waste at all. If we work together, this is easily achieved. I encourage you to take the challenge of zero waste by packing Nude food lunchboxes for your child/ren by reusing containers and buying fewer packaged foods.
The NAPLAN results have been released and it is encouraging to see an improvement in Year 3, 5 and 7 Numeracy results. This year we have received the highest mean scores in Year 3 and Year 5 results since NAPLAN testing began, 46% of Year 3 students were in the highest band. These improvements are a clear reflection of the relentless efforts of our teachers and support staff.
To assist us with our planning for 2020, if you are planning to move from the area or know of families who are moving into the area please inform us of this as soon as possible. In addition, if you have any special considerations for your child/ren’s class placement that we need to be aware of during the class placement process please complete the attached form and return it to the Front Office before 14th October 2019.
Your feedback is important to us. We would appreciate you taking the time to complete the links for our Parent Opinion Survey and Volunteer Award as your children are the centre of everything we do and we aspire to improve student learning outcomes for every student who attends Thiele Primary School.
