Hayes Park Public School

Week 6, Term 4 2020

Principal Welcome

"Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome."-- Arthur Ashe

Congratulations to our team for the most engaging and informative NAIDOC Week  celebrations. Watching our dance team perform and seeing the amazing art works and projects made me feel that the future of Aboriginal education and its complex, enthrallig culture is growing.

It has been a very busy few weeks including 2L leading the Remembrance Day service online, our chess team playing out the state semifinals, Year 6 transition to high schools, Kindergarten Leapfrogs orientation finished last Friday and staff planning for 2021. There is a lot happening and all for the benefit of our students.

This week coming we have Kindergarten at the Zoo, reward day Obstacool course, further high school transition and much, much more. I thank our dedicated staff for all they do to make these events happen.

The P&C met last Monday evening and it was great to have a few new members. One of the biggest impacts you can have for your children is in their education and being a member of the P&C puts you in the forefront of the direction your school will take. I urge you to join us for the AGM Monday 7th December - either online or in person at school. That's right parents can attend meetings on site after hours in the latest COVID updates.

COVID is still at the core of our community wellbeing. At times we make mistakes and we fight the battle against complacency and exhaustion. Communication is at times challenging too as there can be mixed messaging. If we get it wrong please let us know so we can stop it happening again. I thank you for your understanding and thank the staff for making things still happen when so many events are cancelled. They truly are going above and beyond for your children.

Next week we will officially open the new basketball court (weather permitting) and the Talent Quest auditions begin. There are so many activities and events for the students to get involved and find their niche in life. That's what my quote at the start is about and it's what school is about - providing opportunities.

Last day for SRE (Scripture)

  • Just a note to let you know that the last day for SRE (scripture) is next Wednesday 25 November.  I would like to publically thank all the SRE volunteers who give so freely of their time to provide our students with the weekly lessons.  Their time and efforts are very much appreciated.

Stage 3 camp

  • Stage 3 camp to The Great Aussie Bush camp in Kincumber is fast approaching.  The students will head off for their 3 day camp on Wednesday, 2nd December.  Many thanks to Mr Dawson and our Stage 3 teachers for providing our Year 5 & 6 students with such a wonderful opportunity.

School leaders speeches

  • Good luck to all our 2021 School leader nominees who will deliver their speeches on Monday 23rd November to our Years 2-5 classes.  Electing new school leaders is always such a difficult task with so many students who we know would do a wonderful job.  The results of this election will be announced at the Year 6 graduation assembly on Monday 14 December.  Thank to you Mrs Braidotti for coordinating this with our year 5 students.

Obstacool

  • Next week on Tuesday 24th November, Obstacool will be coming to Hayes Park.  A very big thank you to our P&C for funding this wonderful opportunity for our students. After a challenging year, we are all looking forward to some fun and an enjoyable day.
  • Students are asked to wear their house colours on the day.  Check with your class teacher via dojo if you are unsure what house your child is in.

Chess

On Monday, 16th November, we had 6 students; Jayden C 5C, Xavier A 6D,  Ewan H 6T, Harrison S 6T, Cooper S 4S and Samuel F 4S participate in the online Interschool Chess Semi-Final tournament.

Our students versed other primary school aged students from a range of schools such as Central Coast P.S, Bradbury P.S, Crestwood P.S, Christ the King Primary School, Tighes Hill P.S, Ascham School, Barnsley P.S, Timbumburi P.S, Sydney Japanese International School and Bella Vista P.S. In this first semi-final heat round, our students had a solid field of 64 competitors.

As we await the score results from the next semi-final heat that still needs to be played to see where our school ranked, I would like to thank our 6 students for representing our school with great spirit, enthusiasm and strategic thinking.

A big thank you to Mrs Gould for the use of the laptops and library space.

NAIDOC week @ Hayes Park PS

NAIDOC Week Sunday 8th November- Sunday 15th November

Week 5 Hayes Park celebrated NAIDOC Week and this year's theme was Always Was. Always Will Be.

At Hayes Park we participated in a range of exciting cultural experiences that provided our students with a better understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture.

Some of the cultural experiences that we participated in was our first ever Koori Dance Group choreographed by our wonderful Aboriginal staff member Mr Munna King. The Koori Dance Group opened up our week of celebrations through our NAIDOC Assembly on Monday where we also had our NAIDOC address presented by Principal Mr Honeywood and Miss Scarcella.

Tuesday was a full day of foraging and creating instillation artworks using resources provided by Mother (earth). Students created three different artworks using x-ray art that is a traditional style used by the people of Arnhem Land in NT.  They created a goanna, a fish and a meeting place; all of which are significant to our local Dharawal area. Wednesday our students got to go around to the finished art instillations to appreciate the artwork and to have discussions around the materials and concepts used.

Thursday and Friday were two big days where we had our Wall of Fame walkthrough and our Indigenous Games. The Wall of Fame was a new initiative that we ran this year to celebrate all of the amazing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander role models within Australia and across a range of different career fields. We even had WIN TV come and film our Wall of Fame!

The students absolutely loved our NAIDOC Week this year and we cannot wait for 2021!

Early Stage One

Kindergarten

In the past couple of weeks, Kindergarten classes enjoyed researching Aboriginal authors and reading rich texts.  This coincided well with NAIDOC week and our English unit.

Tomorrow, we are super excited about our first Kindergarten excursion this year to Sydney Zoo.  This excursion complements our Science unit we studied earlier in the year ‘Living World’.  Kindergarten children will also have the opportunity to learn about aboriginal culture, the local Darug people, bush tucker and plants grown in the area. Students will need to be at school by 7.45am. We are anticipating returning to school by 3pm.  Updates will be posted via Facebook throughout the day.

Stage One

Years 1 & 2

This term Stage 1 has started their Second Step lessons and classes have been developing their foundational learning skills through songs, games and puppets! Our students have enjoyed learning to focus their attention by switching on their ‘attento-scopes’, using positive self-talk and being assertive to ask for help. We can’t wait for the social-emotional lessons on empathy and emotion management in the coming weeks.

Students have been busy getting their dancing shoes tapping! 2L, 1/2V and 2C have gone back in time and have learnt the Heel and Toe Polka (a no contact Covid safe version). Next is the Square Dance where Mr Honeywood is going to join us as our special guest dance caller! 1C, 1T, 1M and 2M have been exploring dance, developing body skills and using their imagination during creative dance lessons. They have been creating and investigating different movements that mimic water within our world and have been learning how dance can be used as an expressive way of storytelling.

Today students went “Back to the Past” at Vaucluse House through a live virtual excursion. Students visited a 1820s kitchen and discovered how food preparation technologies have changed. We then all stepped outside to the laundry to discuss washing day and learnt about the time-consuming task of washing clothes by hand - not much fun at all! We all then returned into the house to explore the larder where we discovered food storing and cooling techniques.

Students also learnt how to play children’s games from the past, such as skipping, quoits and hoops, which we can have fun playing together at school.

Stage Two

Years 3 & 4

Stage 2 Creative Arts, Environmental Science and Technology rotations

This term Stage 2 students have been involved in Creative Arts, Environmental Science and Technology rotations. Students have been rotating each afternoon to work with each of the Stage 2 teachers. Students have been learning Dance with Ms Scarcella, Bucket Drumming with Mr Regent, 3D Design with Ms Motbey and Environmental Science with Ms Pantano. The students have been able to learn and gain new knowledge across a range of areas that might inspire further personal interests and development throughout their time at HPPS. During Week 8, Stage 2 students will be performing dance and bucket drumming at the front gate to showcase what they have learnt this term. Please see the list below and feel free to meet us outside the top gate at 2:30pm.

Week 8 - 2:30pm

Tuesday  - Dance 4R - Bucket Drumming - 4S

Wednesday - Dance 3C - Bucket Drumming - 4R

Thursday - Dance 3M - Bucket Drumming -  3C

Friday - Dance 4S - Bucket Drumming - 3M

Students in 3/4F have been split into different classes for rotations, please contact Mr Maples via Dojo to find out your child performance days.

Stage Three

Years 5 & 6

There’s no winding down for year 6 as the end of 2020 approaches - we are simply winding up with an action-packed end to our final year at Hayes Park as we prepare for our high school journey. Our NAIDOC week celebrations this year included our school captains leading our service and our sports captains running Indigenous games across the school. The posters we created for our Walk of Fame about Indigenous celebrities were show stoppers and highlighted our research and technology skills.

Kanahooka High students and teachers provided us with some fabulous opportunities to shuffle classes, get involved and deplete some of our excess energy through their Creating Chances Program. We enjoyed taking part in rotational sport activities which incorporated useful game skills, required team work and flexibility and provided high school students with leadership opportunities. We look forward to seeing some of our HPPS students returning in similar circumstances in upcoming years.

The teachers have been busy planning several events such as our adventure-filled ‘Great Aussie Bush camp’ to the Tea Gardens in Kincumber and our Farewell evening. We have been learning our year 6 farewell song to serenade you all and some of us will also be performing a dance at our celebration assembly.

There is so much to look forward to in the upcoming weeks such as Obstacool and our final reward day at the Movies will be a blast! Many year 5 & 6 students will be auditioning for our first ever Hayes Park’s Got Talent show which will be sure to entertain audiences. Graduation this year may look a little different due to COVID restrictions as our final walk-thru will not be through arched arms in the hall rather a path of students leading up to the gates where parents will be waiting and many tears will be shed as year 6 say their final goodbyes to their teachers, their friends and Hayes Park.
