Husky Star Newsletter Week 9 Term 3 2020

From the School Leadership Team

Every now and again we have some families who come in contact with our school who have a real impact. This term we had the pleasure of two young men attending our school for a short period of time. Oliver and Jasper came to Huskisson Public School after spending all of their schooling in a foreign country. Both boys thoroughly enjoyed their time here and, as a parting gift, they made a very generous donation to the school.

As Oliver was in 5/6 Currambene, we wanted to find a way to give back to the class and use this donation for them. The senior electronic whiteboards have lately been beginning to fail. It was decided that we would use this money to go towards buying 5/6 Currambene a large display screen for their classroom. It was finally installed yesterday and Mr Vidler and all of the children got the opportunity to celebrate the generosity of this family. Thank you for you parting gift.

This term we are excited to announce that we are upgrading all of our primary classroom display boards. 3/4 White Sands and 3/4 Sharknet will next week have installed two state of the art CleverTouch panels. These are similar to the ones we have previously had installed in the infants classrooms, only larger. These will replace the aging interactive whiteboards that have been in these classrooms for some time.

Miss Leslie and 5/6 Voyager have been fortunate to have our large CommBox installed on their wall for them to use. Upgrading technology is an expensive task and we are very lucky to be able to do this. Large displays within classrooms increase engagement in lessons that have been specifically designed by our talented teachers for our students.

As a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) school from Years 3-6 a large proportion of our students bring a laptop to school each day and complete much of their work in a digital manner. We also use our technology to encourage and explore many opportunities for critical and creative thinking and preparing our students for the modern world. Being a BYOD school is something our students look forward to as they approach Year 3. With our teachers being able to access newer technology they are better able to link in with what the students are doing and access new and exciting learning opportunities.

Athletics with a difference

Over the past week all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been taking part in the field events of our annual athletics carnival. Infants students have been involved in shot put, long jump and discus and primary students have done these events as well as high jump.

Because of current COVID restrictions we have carried these out within our stage groups and each stage has done so with diligence in maintain good hygiene. We are grateful that the 2020 athletic record will reflect the talents of current students.

Next week our students will take part in the track events. They will again maintain stage groupings and times will be recorded so that we are able to assign ribbons early in Term 4. Please help us by explaining to your child that just because they won their race, it does not necessarily mean that they have won the entire event.

We will continue to take photos and share with our parents and communities the athletic achievements of our students. So far we can report that the CJ and Ryder have both broken discus records in their age groups.

Thank you to our wonderful teachers who have also been so very keen to get all the equipment out each day and set up our school - just like they would at Homebush Stadium!!

Library News

PHAS-MANIA hits the Library!

“Look, we have Phasmids!” said the kids in kindergarten during their library visit. However, most of us simply call them Spiny Leaf insects. Thanks to Mrs M, one of our casual teachers, our school has been gifted not one, but four of these amazing insects. These ancient looking creatures will be a feature in the library and in Moona Moona so that all students can watch them grow and interact with them.  Mrs M also gave us a bunch of eggs so that we can really get the idea of the life cycle of the extatosoma tiaratum.  Thanks Mrs M, you are a champion insect lady and Huskisson Public School thanks you!

Have a look at these pictures! The Phasmids are Phantastic!

Stage 3 on Fire

Stage 3 has been very busy completing their storyboards for their Bush Fire Plans with some almost ready to start filming. It has been encouraging to see the serious approach to their learning when it comes to understanding how to best prepare for the next bush fire season.  I look forward to next week when the students will be filming their segments for our informative film.

Tournament of Minds Team achieves Top Merit

Today was a well-deserved celebration day for our seven Tournament of Minds team members. On Sunday they received TOM merit for the top performance in the Arts section of the challenge.  Well done Keshy, Evie, Abby, Chi, Tahlia, Olivia and Kate! It was a mammoth six weeks of problem-solving in many different ways and well worth the challenge.  It was so nice to be able to debrief with the team so that we can start planning for next year. Well done Team Husky! What a great result for everyone!

Gardening For Sustainability - Week 9

Maintenance was the key word out and around the school grounds this week. The students continue to learn that our school gardens do not give instant gratification. The rewards are reaped over time and sometimes don’t always result in a product. Sometimes the benefits are in the connections the students are making with one another and the Earth. The students learnt about weed management, investigated water conservation strategies and are learning that there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’.
