Jamberoo Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 8 Newsletter 2022

From the Principal

Dear Parent / Carer,

Happy week 8 Jamberoo School community. This past two weeks, our school has been thriving with students doing their best work in every classroom and on every playground. I had the pleasure of teaching Year 3 Wonga Wonga yesterday when Miss Watchirs was absent. This time in classrooms reminds me of why I became a teacher and why, here at Jamberoo we place students at the centre of all we do.

Today we held another assembly and celebrated the fantastic start to school that Kindergarten have had. It was great to see a growing crowd of parents and community members join us for this assembly.

Easter Hat Parade

Just a reminder that our end of term hat parade is coming up. Students are asked to construct a hat at home made from recycled, reused or re-purposed materials. We love the environmental aspect of our hat creations and being able to interview some students on the day, who are able to tell us about their creations. Making these hats is also a fun thing that families can do together. On the day we invite all families to come to school to celebrate the achievements of our students.

Easter Raffle

On Monday students will be given a small book of raffle tickets. The money raised from this raffle goes towards the Year 5/6 major excursion to Wedderburn later in the year. The prizes are Easter Baskets!

Parent information sessions

Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend the parent information sessions of Tuesday of this week. I attended each session throughout the afternoon and was pleased to learn about the routines of each classrooms and what expectations each teacher had for their classrooms. Mrs Martin also opened the library and was able to share many of the wonderful aspects of the Jamberoo STEAM program. If you were unable to attend, please send a message to your teacher and they will be able to share their notes from the evening.

3 Way conferences

In week 10 all families are invited to take part in three-way conferences. These are a wonderful way for families, students and teachers to examine learning goals and objectives for learning for the remainder of the year. We will be sending out a questionnaire for all parents so that we can have a scaffold for our discussions. You can start by thinking of your learning goals for your child and information you feel that the teacher would benefit from knowing about your child. Each meeting will be a brief face to face session. Teachers have all sent out booking notes on Operoo and will need to stick closely to their planned sessions. We look forward to seeing everyone during week 10.

ANZAC Day

This year we will be marching at both the Jamberoo Anzac service on Saturday 23rd April and the Kiama service on Monday 25th April. Please keep these dates free in the holiday so that your child gets the opportunity to represent their school in their uniform.  I am also looking for parents who may be able to help with the coordination of the Kiama march as I will be unable to attend this march.

Kindergarten

Congratulations to all of the Kindergarten students for receiving their welcome to Jamberoo award today at assembly.

5/6 Cooinda maths

In week 7 5/6 Cooinda focused on angles. We have been exploring identifying angles and working with mathematical problems involving angles. On Thursdays we incorporate technology and use Mathsonline and prodigy to practise our angle work. There are great discussions on maths principals that take place. It is fantastic to see and hear.

Kookaaraa Mathematicians

Kookaaraa have been loving exploring lots of new warm up games to get our brains switched on and ready to complete our math activities. We especially had fun completing this warm up. Students had to set a target number and a number that they would skip count by. Once that was done, they began taking turns trying to reach their target number by adding their decided number 1, 2, or 3 times. Whoever hit the target first, won! This activity required a lot of thinking forward which Kookaaraa is great at. We loved it.

We’ve also thoroughly enjoyed getting into measurement! We worked to measure a variety of lines around our room using informal units. I loved hearing this mantra being quietly chanted around the room as the kids worked – ‘Watch for gaps, no overlaps’. The best part of our measurement study so far had to be our foot measuring activity. We worked together to measure our feet and compare and order our measurement strips. No surprises that Miss Alpen trumped all and took out biggest foot in Kookaaraa.

5/6 Cooinda writers

In 5/6 Cooinda, the focus for writing is "A sentence a day!" This aims to get the students writing grammatically correct and accurate. The students then progress to write descriptive paragraphs. Our focus today was on writing a description of the kingfisher, for a local bird watching club.
