Dear Parents & Community Members,

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Cyber Safety presentation generously sponsored by our P&C that was delivered by Paul Litherland. The information, questions and discussion were outstanding.  While Paul went to great lengths to say he was not wanting to scare parents, the greatest “take away” from the session was an increased awareness.  This extends to what your child is using (apps, social media platforms) the levels of communication in relation to internet understandings and the controls (e.g., settings on devices, apps and modems) an adult should use to support the safety of the child.

This term the staff of our school have committed a significant amount of time preparing for the new school year.  Following the data analysis undertaken by teachers and shared with the School Board, Operational Plans for 2023 have been drafted to address areas for development.  This includes English (Reading and Grammar), Mathematics (Measurement) and a continuation of our focus on Student Health and Wellbeing.  All plans are currently in draft format and will be shared with the School Board at the next meeting on November 22.

Our current group of Year 5 children have been undertaking a leadership course in preparation for nomination and selection of Student Councillors and House Captains for next year.  While the course culminates with the selection process, last week witnessed the “Great Race” through Perth’s CBD and the ability to showcase their leadership skills.  Based on these efforts, our student leadership for next year is in good hands.

Finally, as the weather warms up, the excitement in the lead up to the Colour Blast next week is intense - my sincere thanks to all the parents and community members for efforts towards this year’s event.  Bring on the colour!!

1:1 TECHNOLOGY TIMELINE

In preparation for the 2023 school year, we are now inviting parents of students who will be in Year 4 in 2023, to access the Winthrop Parent Portal to purchase an iPad and required accessories: http://sales.winaust.com.au/shop/glengarryps

Alternatively, families are able to provide a family-owned iPad if it runs iOS 16 as a minimum requirement, and has 64gb of storage.  Please note, the school will be installing a Mobile Device Management (MDM) program onto the iPad, which involves wiping the device.  Wiping the iPad involves all apps, settings and data being removed.  It is therefore recommended that you back up your iPad before your child brings it to school in 2023.

We would also ask that parents of students who are in Year 3 in 2023, complete a quick survey to indicate whether they would be willing to purchase an iPad for their child if they are in a 3/4 class. Please click the following link to access the survey: https://forms.office.com/r/MX3y2TQrkS

Around Glengarry

Numero Excursion

On Tuesday 8th of November, after many weeks of training, the Glengarry Numero Team made the short journey up the road to St Stephen’s School for our Interschool Competition.  Although it was a close game, we unfortunately lost by 10 points with the final score being 112.5 to 102.5.  We had a lot fun and Mr Lewis and our competitors made us feel welcome.  We would like to congratulate St Stephens on their win and thank them for hosting this event at their school.

This was a great challenge; we made heaps of new friends, and we can’t wait for next year’s competition!

Kindergarten Capers

Kindergarten Working Bees...

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the many Kindergarten families who contributed to our two amazing working bees in a variety of ways!  Our Happy Hen House now has an extended fenced area for our mixed flock of 7 hens - Chinese Silkies, Frizzle and Hyline Brown.  We have four new chickens that hatched in term 3.  Our wonderful playground now has a feature Mini-Beasts Garden around the BIG gum tree next to the Obstacle Course Bark Pit.  Lots of families helped with a variety of maintenance jobs to get the playground ready for our Kindergarten Garden Parties for each Kindergarten group.

Enjoy some before and after pictures!

Garden Party Celebrations...

Last weekend each Kindergarten group enjoyed fabulous weather for their own special Garden Party celebrations with their families.  The children enjoyed a variety of nature play activities and happily took home some freshly picked potatoes from our potato patch in our garden!  Many children ate crunchy carrots and peas from the garden and freshly cooked potatoes for the first time too.  A few highlights of our afternoon were celebrating our wonderful new Mini-Beasts Garden around the BIG gumtree in the playground and naming the four new chickens!

CONGRATULATIONS  to the winners of the lucky dip naming competition...

Patrick (Kookaburra); the Blue leg band chicken is now called - Lightning Bolt

Shinya (Magpies); the Red Leg Band chicken is now called - Hatty

Isabel (R.Lorikeet); the Orange Leg band chicken is now called  - Chickalitta

Natalia (R.Lorikeet); the Green Leg Band chicken is now called - Daisy

Wonderful World of Work

Room One has been creating some Art to complement their Two weeks of swimming.  They used edicole dyes to paint backgrounds and experimented with contrasting colours.  The students were very happy with their final products and so was Miss Cole, who gave out some well-deserved stickers for excellent efforts.

Room 8 commenced their persuasive writing unit with an activity to persuade others that a lollipop was the best sweet.  To do this everyone was lucky enough to enjoy a lollipop and use their engaging vocabulary to describe how delicious it was.  It was an activity that all the students in room 8 enjoyed!

Some students presented their wonderful work to Miss Cole who was very hungry after reading their excellent persuasive writing.

Year 5 Leadership Excursion

Over the past 4 weeks, Year 5 students have been participating in our Leadership Program in preparation for Year 6.

Last Thursday, 3 November, the program concluded with The Amazing Race held in Perth’s CBD.

Students raced around the city in small groups, completing all sorts of crazy challenges and working as a team to let their leadership skills shine! It was an eventful, energetic and exciting day!

Many thanks go to the wonderful parent volunteers and teachers who attended to make this event so successful.

Athletics Champion

Sam O' has done it again!

Here he is, having competed against boys two years older than himself, at the All Schools Track and Field day representing Glengarry Primary School in the U14 800m race.

That's a bronze medallion around his neck!

Congratulations Sam.

Tennis Star

Misty W represented Western Australia at the Bruce Cup School Sport Australia Team Tennis Championships in Canberra from 16th October to the 22nd October.  Misty won 10 of 14 matches and the WA team were placed 4th over all, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal to New South Wales.

We are super proud of Misty representing WA in both Netball and Tennis this year.

Health and Hygiene

Covid Update

Taking personal responsibility

First and foremost, stay home if you are unwell and get tested if you have cold or flu symptoms.

WA.gov.au has detailed information on how to access tests.

If you test positive to COVID-19, you are strongly encouraged to continue to:

  • not attend work until the symptoms have resolved (unless advised otherwise by your employer)
  • register your RAT result
  • tell your household members and intimate partners that you have tested positive for COVID-19
  • advise work that you have tested positive for COVID-19.

Please also continue to practise healthy hygiene habits and stay up to date with vaccinations.

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.
