Bus Transport Survey

There were only 4 families that indicated that they would be interested in a bus service from Craigieburn and Roxburgh Park. Due to the very small numbers we are no longer considering the use of a bus service for before and after school transport.

YEAR 6 CAMP

YEAR 6 CAMP

Last week the Year 6 students headed off to Camp Weekaway for 3 days for their Yr 6 Camp. This was a fantastic experience for all involved. These 3 days gave our students the opportunity to experience a number of new and exciting activities, spend time with their peers and make some new friendships.

Below are some reflections from our time away.

I'm here to tell you about Camp Weekaway! It was one of the best experiences I have ever had! There were a bunch of activities including flying fox (over a lake), possum glider, hut building, raft building, making damper/bread and so much more. It was also a place of teamwork and communication where you would be split into random groups and communicate with each other to work things out. My favourite activity there was for sure the canoeing, you would learn how to use a canoe and even play tag for fun (the teacher starts as it). This will for sure be one of my favourite memories in my mind.   Fadi

This year the grade sixes went on camp to a place called Camp Weekaway. This camp gave us all total classic camp vibes. Whether we were sleeping atop of our bunk beds, maybe falling into the river while canoeing or of coarse gobbling up roasted marshmallows we all had a blast. It was the perfect time to experience new and different activities. For example, we all had to build a hut in groups only using materials like bark, leaves and logs, then to put our huts to the test a bucket of water would be thrown on top of the roof we made and if your hut wasn’t waterproof then you would be drenched. Something else this camp provided were team building skills like with the activity Possum Glider. You were hooked to a rope and while you ran towards the river, the rest of your group would run the opposite way hauling the rope you were attached to with them. The effect was brilliant for you would be shot up into the air before the rest of your team would slowly lower you down to the ground. Lastly one of our last activities was to do a 5k run to finish of the marvellous experience we all had and of course the little cherry on top of our trip is we all got experience waltzing in an emu parade.   Mariela

Last week, the year 6s went to Camp Weekaway. While there were many things that I enjoyed, something that stood out to me were the different varieties of activities that we were offered, along with every activity I learned a skill, for example. On day 1 I did raft-building, it taught me the importance and understanding of teamwork and communication. Our next activity was damper. It taught me how patience is important and how we sometimes need to wait for things to take action. On day 2 I did canoeing, and at first I admit  I didn't know how to paddle right, left , forward and backwards but with help from my partner we discovered that if we wanted to do it right we had to keep going and not give up.  Dalina

Camp Weekaway was a great experience, All the food was awesome and the activities were so much fun. The cabins were nice too. At camp, you are never bored, there was so much to do. The days I was at camp were probably the best days of the year, and I wish we could go back again someday. It is really busy each day was full of action packed fun all throughout the day, from the time we got there until the time we left. I really enjoyed camp.  Anthony

WELLBEING

WORLD LEADERS DAY

On Monday 27th March, Mr B and I had the joy of taking 8 of our student leaders to the Young Leaders Day in the City. This was a great opportunity for the students to hear from 4 successful Australians and listen to what they do and how they have been leaders in their space.

Below are a few reflections from our day.

While at the conference for Young Leaders Day I learnt a lot of things. When Candy Hertz was speaking I learnt that you don’t always have to follow what everyone else is doing and to go your own way. If everybody is following the new trend you don’t have to do it. She said that when an opportunity comes, say yes to it because you never know you could like it. To do what you love. When you are going through life ask for help and it is ok to not know what you are doing until you do it. We then had Amanda Johnstone who opened a business when she was 16. She told us to step out of our comfort zone and do what you believe. Write down what you're passionate about and ideas about it no matter how crazy. She said to learn to handle criticism as we will all get it and those people either don’t want you to succeed or they think your idea is crazy. Another piece of advice from her was to never compare yourself to others as comparison is the thief of all joy. Next was Nazeem Hussain, he gave pretty much the same advice as the others, to follow your dreams and to be proud of who you are. Famous footy player Dipper then came and he said “It is not success if you cross the finish line alone”, so that teaches us to always work as a team. Luke

On Monday, we went to the National Leaders Day event at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition building.  We had three sessions full of learning and lots and lots of dancing games with a DJ.  Every session we had a couple of inspirational speakers talking to us about life and the qualities of leaders. The inspirational speakers we had were Candy Hertz (media), Amanda Johnstone (business), Nazeem Hussain (comedian) and finally Robert Dipper (my personal favourite and a famous AFL star).  A recurring theme was to ask for help to be successful in life.  All in all, it was an amazing day!  We learnt so much; thanks to the teachers for organising this for us and accompanying us on this excursion. Hudson

The National Young Leaders Day Had four presenters in it. The first presenter Candy Hertz she is a sports broadcaster second presenter, Amanda Johnstone she had a clothing store at 16 and makes technology, third presenter Nazeem Hassain he is a comedian, fourth presenter Robert DiPierdomenico He is an AFL legend. My favourite Interviewer is Amanda Johnstone. She stood out the most to me because she was the most positive and happy. To me she had a few quotes that I liked and were inspirational. For example “it’s important to find your words”, “take a little step forward” The thing that I learnt is to keep trying in life no matter what, like all these people. I am sure they had rough times during life but look where they are now. My favourite quote was “Success is nothing when you arrive at the finish line alone” from Robert DiPierdomenico. Noah

HARMONY DAY

Last week we recognised Harmony Day in our classes.

Harmony Day is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds.

Year 4 discussed the meaning of Harmony Day and what it means to live in harmony (our nation, community and family). We discussed what multicultural means - we watched a Behind the News (ABC program) video on migration and Australia’s multiculturalism. We then talked about how food is an important part of different cultures including our special / favourite family meals and traditions.

Year 5 looked for images around the school showing diversity, peace, respect and cultural awareness to create a collage.

Year 6 read the book Common Wealth and spoke about slam poetry. They discussed how the first nations people feel about how they have been treated and what they would like to do and see moving forward. They discussed our multicultural community and where we have all come from, students, parents and grandparents. The children traced one of their hands and added what their backgrounds are, to demonstrate how St. Matthew’s is an inclusive and accepting multicultural community.

Below are some photos showing how some of the classes celebrated Harmony Day.
