Dear parents and caregivers,

Breakfast @ the Brook

Last Thursday was a fantastic community event with the return of the Breakfast @ the Brook. It was wonderful to see such a large turn out, including community members and visitors to our town.

Thank you to the P&C and associated helpers who coordinated the Breakfast and for those who attended as proceeds from the breakfast go towards the Year 5/6 Camp. Year 5/6 students also held a Guess the Jellybean competition, won by Lauren Lehmann, and a 100 Square raffle, won and donated back by Mr Lewington. These two fundraisers raised $295.

Aussie of the Month

Mathew demonstrates Be Respectful in all that he does from his warm greetings, manners and polite demeanour, to his willingness to help others. This care and consideration for others stands out.

Swimming Carnival

Our Year 3-6 students joined students from Frankland River and Kendenup Primary Schools for the annual Swimming Carnival at the Mount Barker Memorial Pool today.

With the aim of 'Maximum participation - maximum fun', students had the opportunity to compete in races over several distances, water based novelty events and land based novelties in what proved to be an enjoyable day for all.

This was another opportunity to reinforce and see students demonstrate the expectations of Be Respectful by encouraging others, Be Resilient by continuing to push even when it was challenging, and Be Your Best by  giving it a go and always striving to improve.

Thank you to our parent body for transporting our students and for filling official roles - without this support, events like this cannot happen.

Congratulations to all involved!

Olympians visit Cranbrook

Yesterday, Thursday 9 March, we were treated to a visit by two Australian Olympians. Josie Tomic, Cycling, represented Australia at several World Championships and the 2012 London Olympics coming agonisingly close to a Bronze medal - missing out by 0.01sec. Sophie White, Athletics, has represented Australia at the 2018 Youth Olympics and is on track to hopefully make the team for the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 110m hurdles.

Josie Tomic - Cycling

Josie noticed the school expectations, notably Be Resilient and Be Your Best and highlighted the connection with her journey as an athlete and the importance of being able to bounce back from setbacks. Growing up, she was always into sport and dreamt of going to the Olympics. She got into cycling because of the equipment, the science and the danger. Josie set herself goals and asked three questions:

  • Is it achievable?   Remove self-doubt and surrounded yourself by positive people and those who can support
  • Could someone like me make it?
  • How do I do it?   Set the goal... Seek help...

Setbacks happen, but to overcome them and bounce back, you need to approach them with a positive mindset, surround yourself with positive  people, trust your circle (family, friends and supporters), and trust the process.

She recalled her Olympic experience as being exciting, but with a sense of doubt and of being a 'fish out of water' again highlighting the need for having strategies to deal with nerves and pressure.

One key take away Josie had four our students was:

Everyday work towards being your best self

Sophie White - Athletics

Sophies journey started with her passion for horses as a young child. This all changed with a fall and serious injury where her parents decided to explore other sports. Sophie moved into gymnastics which is where her coach saw the speed and power and suggested if she were to stop doing gymnastics that maybe she should try athletics. Little athletics provided her with the opportunity to learn the disciplines of athletics, build friendships, participate and compete which ultimately lead to her progressing through the ranks as a junior to compete at the National Championships, World Championships and on to the 2018 Youth Olympics where she won a Silver medal in the hurdles. Sophie shared a life-lesson she learned as part of her journey - 'Control, the controllables' - do everything you can to do your best. Sophie suffered a major setback at the World Championships where she broke bones in both feet, an injury that lingered for three and a half years. This major setback was seen as an opportunity to learn and grow, and through this, the importance of celebrating small wins along the way to a bigger goal was reinforced for her.

One key take away Sophie had for our students was:

Whatever setback you face, find the positives to turn it into a learning moment to continue to improve

Both athletes shared some of their mementos and medals from their careers and answered a range of questions from eager students, but more importantly the messages of resilience and striving to be your best.

Thank you to the Australian Olympic Committe and the Government of Western Australia Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for providing this opportunity for our students.

Year 4/5/6 Brainstorming Interesting Questions for our Olympic Visitors

NAPLAN 23

On Wednesday 8 March, Year 3 and 5 students had another opportunity to familiarise themselves with the NAPLAN testing platform and protocols. NAPLAN 23 starts next week and runs from March 15-27 nationally.

Students will undertake the following testing:

Writing (pen and paper for Year 3; online for Year 5) - Wednesday 15 March

Reading - Thursday 16 March

Conventions of Language - Monday 20 March

Numeracy - Wednesday 22 March

Student Leadership

Our Year 6 student leaders will attend the GRIP Leadership Conference in Albany on Thursday 23 March. The GRIP Conference is a day of motivational speakers, leaders in their own field, filled with engaging moments to further develop the leadership potential of our Year 6s and complement the leadership development undertaken at school.

GRIP always proves to be a hit and I'm sure this year will be no exception.

Open Classrooms

As part of our Reporting to Parents processes here at Cranbrook, we will be holding an Open Classroom afternoon on Thursday 30 March from 2:15pm. Parents are encouraged to come into classrooms and see the learning that has taken place so far this year. This is a fantastic chance to see your child's work and have conversations with them to find out what they have been doing and what they may remember. Following this, appointments can be made should you wish to have a more formal discussion with teachers.

Contributions and Charges 2023

Cranbrook Primary School Contributions and Charges for 2023—Fees and Charges are now due for payment. Thank you to those families who have already made payment. The School does not invoice each individual family, payment is requested via the Newsletter.  Your prompt response to this request would be appreciated.  The fees and charges you pay help the school purchase resources that improve student outcomes from K-6.

Contributions are an up-front payment but Charges are to be paid as they take place eg. if there is an excursion you pay for it when the event is taking place.

An information brochure on Fees and Charges was sent home late last year which has the breakdown of payment and a brief outline of each payment. This document is also available on your SkoolBag app, where it can be located in the Important Information section.

Positive Behaviour Support

It has been wonderful to see and hear the use of our school expectations - Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Resilient and Be Your Best - throughout the school. Classes have invested time in discussing, explicitly teaching and demonstrating, and acknowledging these expectations when demonstrated as can be seen by the over 300 Stars and Rockets being earnt over the last 4 weeks.

The focus for the next few weeks is: Be Responsible.

Ride 2 School Day

National Ride2School Day

Friday 24 March is National Ride2School Day - Australia's biggest celebration of active travel and one of the best days on the school calendar.

The Shire of Cranbrook’s Road Safety Committee has secured funding from the RAC for some prizes, including bike helmets, to encourage safer cycling for our students.

Sgt Nat Wynen has also offered to support students to ride to school on the day with a central hub at the Town Hall (to provide opportunity for non town-based students to be able to participate. We will be having a police escort from the Town hall departing at 8:25am on the day. Sgt Nat will also ensure safe crossing of the highway at the intersection of Dunn Street (adjacent to the playground) should any town students wish to join.

This will be followed by Breakfast Club and a bike safety and basic maintenance session until around 9:30am.
