Principal's Message

Welcome Back to all our Students, Parents, Staff and Friends of St Matthew’s,

I hope you all had the opportunity to rest up and relax after what was a very busy and full on second term. It is great to see so many of your smiling and happy faces back at school ready for another busy schedule for term three.

FAMILY TREE

If you haven’t already don’t forget to check out the Family Tree outside the Grade 3A classrooms at the end of the main corridor and find your Family name Leaf. Thank you again to Mrs Howden (Religious Education Leader) & Mrs Fleischmann (Student Wellbeing Leader) and Mrs Auld-Callinan (Visual Arts Leader) and all the students and Teachers for their wonderful work and display.

REMINDER ABOUT RATs – RAPID ANTIGEN TESTING & VACCINATIONS

Just a reminder that a new box of RATs for each child came home Monday night. They will continue to be distributed to you as they have been throughout this school year for the  Terms 3 & 4 . As was mentioned in our past Newsletters, we do not recommend that your child complete a RAT unless they have symptoms. If they have symptoms then you need to notify school and have them do a PCR test and follow the directions given by the Government Department of Health.

Booster and flu Vaccinations ARE NOW FREE, WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GET VACCINATED BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. Vaccinations continue to remain the best way to protect students and staff in our school and you and your loved ones at home, especially those elderly members of your families.

Getting vaccinated is easy and bookings can be done via the Department of Health’s website https://portal.cvms.vic.gov.au. If you have any questions about the vaccines, I encourage you to speak to your GP or a health practitioner.

Once again our sincere thanks for your ongoing cooperation and support during these Pandemic times.

REMINDER SCHOOL UNIFORM

As I mentioned last term it came to my and the staff’s attention that a number of students have been wearing incorrect uniform as the term has worn on. I noticed on Monday again that far less were doing this, but there are still the odd one here or there in incorrect uniform. With the weather being extremely cold then all the more reason for the proper Winter Uniform to be worn.

· Black School shoes and grey socks should be worn every day except PE / Sport days.

· Sport Uniforms and Runners should only be worn on PE / Sport days or otherwise instructed.

· School beanies are the only beanies to be worn to school as they school uniform.

· Long sleeved white school shirts should be tucked into skirts and pants at all times.

· Grey tights from the uniform shop should be worn , not other colours

· Our Winter Jackets are optional, but very warm and water proof.

Parents we have a lovely uniform, which looks great when all in place, so we ask for your assistance with this please.

Once again please remember in your prayers those loved ones affected by COVID, Influenza and all the other nasties still around at the moment. Also special intentions to all the displaced Men, Women and Children (alive and deceased) in the Ukraine.

Yours Sincerely,

Bob Brown - Principal

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK

Prayer for New Term

Lord,

As we prepare for the coming of a new term, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.

Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.

Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.

May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be place in your hands.

May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this term.

We thank you, Lord.

Amen

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

PSG's and What are they?

Every term you may see in the newsletter that I remind some parents to book in for a PSG. But what exactly are they and why do some children have them and others do not?

PSG stands for Parent Support Group this means that your child has a medical, physical or has been identified with a learning difficulty they have in the classroom or even before they came to school.

These meetings are done termly with the exception of children with anaphylaxis they have meetings only twice a year. The importance of these meetings is to provide goals that allow the child to be supported specifically to their individual needs. These goals are listed on the PLP known as Personalized Learning Plan here at St Matthews.

The teachers base the goals on the child’s abilities and design and monitor their progress over the term to see if they are able to achieve the goals that are set.

It is important to have parents involved as these goals allow parents to help their children at home too!

These days, we provide the opportunity to have the meeting ONLINE and now in person. These meetings are signed off by the parents, the teachers and myself the Learning Diversity Leader. By doing this regularly every term, it allows us to provide evidence to the Government who then can allocate funding through NCCD for Learning Support Officers (LSO) in the classroom.

Without the funding it becomes very difficult for teachers to provide all the support all the time on their own.

Remember to check your child’s school bag, check your email (even in SPAM) or Seesaw for the PSG invitation!

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Lunch Clubs at St Matthew’s

There are many things happening at lunchtime at St Matthew’s.

This year we have our wonderful library open on Mondays and Tuesdays where the children can choose to play a variety of games such as UNO, Connect 4, they are able to work on a jigsaw puzzle or even read a book (the library is full of them) Mrs Pengelly is very welcoming to all those who come and join in on those days.

On Wednesdays and Friday, we have the Gardening Club that works in the garden behind the grade 4 classrooms and the staff room, where the children learn under the guidance of our Super Gardner Mrs Mazzone. It is a very fluid group and they learn some very simple skills and have assisted in selling the abundance of lemons we currently have on our lemon trees.

On Thursday, we have the Chess Club which is run by Mrs White, where skills are taught and many of the children try to beat Mrs White (none have succeeded so far!)

These clubs are run by teachers who give up their precious lunch breaks to assist and provide the children with something extra or a safe place to be.

On Wet Days which are held in the classroom, the children are provided with a variety of activities that they can take part in such as some board games, computer games (monitored) and of course, they can play good old-fashioned paper games such as ‘connect the dots’ ‘battleships’ ‘naughts and crosses’.

Parents I am sure you would be able to teach your child some paper games you used to play in the classroom too and then they can share them with their classmates.

WELLBEING

Wellbeing News!

Welcome back to Term 3 we look forward to a term full of fun, learning and good health.

During our Learning Conversations last term there was a common thread of concerns coming through about the lack of sleep some of our children are getting.

Sleep is extremely important for everyone but especially our children.

Our children work so hard during their day, both playing and learning, getting a good night sleep before coming to school ensures their bodies and brains are ready for the day ahead.

During sleep, our brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and even solves problems while you sleep.

The diagram below shows how much sleep we need based on our age.

Children at primary school should be getting between 8-12 hours a night.

Some top tips for helping your child get to sleep are below.

·         Turn off the TV, computer, and other devices, including cellphones, at least 1 hour before it’s time to sleep.

·         Follow a bedtime routine that is calming, such as taking a warm bath or reading.

·         Use your bed just for sleeping — not doing homework, reading, playing games, or talking on the phone. That way, you'll train your body to connect your bed with sleep.
