2022 Term 3 Issue 8

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Students are immersed in our current Inquiry Unit , ‘We are connected through people, place and culture’. With a strong focus on learning about and understanding First Nations people, history and cultures, it has been wonderful to see students genuine care, reflection and understanding grow. Students are keen to share this learning with each other and looking forward to sharing this learning with families at the end of term learning expo.

SURVEYS

There have been a few surveys that have been sent out recently for a range of reasons.

Perspective Surveys:

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Departments parent perspective survey. Staff also participated in a staff perspective survey. These, along with our student climate survey, support us to make decisions about the direction of the school and identify areas to celebrate and areas to improve in.

School Name Change:

We also recently sent out the ‘School name change’ poll and were pleased to have 67 responses in total. Thank you to everyone who responded and also to those who made some additional comments for us to reflect on as we now move forward with the process of name change. We have now sent the name change request to the Department, endorsed by Governing Council and our Education Director. We will now wait to hear back from the Department.

The final results were as follows:

Governing Council proposes that we request a change to our school’s name to become ‘Felixstow Primary School’

Volunteer Survey:

Recently we also sent home information regarding our volunteer survey. This is an open survey that can be done at any time if you wish to begin the process to volunteer at Felixstow. We are working towards gaining back some lost time from the last couple of years to bring our families back in to support our learning programs and school site. If you are interested in volunteering please take the time to fill in this survey so we better understand your needs, skills and availability. Thank you to Casey (Oliver’s Mum) who has started coming in regularly to help in the resource hub.

VACATION CARE

We are very excited to be opening Vacation Care for the first time in the upcoming holidays. Information has already been sent home. Please book early as we only have 25 places available each day. Well done to Hannah, our OSHC director and our OSHC Committee and Governing Council for supporting Hannah and the team to be able to get Vacation care up and running quickly. It will be a trial holidays which we hope will mean we can continue to operate in each school holiday period.

It has been great to start having families in to help celebrate events with us. We had lots of families in to share our book week celebrations and we are looking forward to our upcoming Sports Day together.

REMINDERS:

School Closure Day this Friday 9th September

Pupil Free Day Monday 12th September

Cheers Skye 😊

Royal Adelaide Show

We are SO excited and proud to announce that our Kitchen Garden group were awarded 1st for their seasonal vegetables, 3rd for their vegetable basket and 3rd for their recycled scarecrow by the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA at the Royal Adelaide Show.

A huge congratulations to everyone who contributed; from turning the mulch to making the scarecrow, every bit mattered!!

Meals from the Heart

On Tuesday 30th August, Skye, Chantal, Kelly and Maddi ventured off to Ronald McDonald House to cook dinner and dessert for some of the wonderful families currently housed there. Money raised by our primary students through ice-block sales, is used to purchase ingredients with a different group of staff teaming up to cook for the families each time.

Meals from the Heart is such a special program which allows members of the community to support and engage with families whose child may be seriously ill or injured by cooking them a meal.

Ronald McDonald House Charities does such an amazing job supporting families and we love having the opportunity to volunteer with them ♥

A VERY late Welcome!

This year Jarrod joined our team and has been working with us maintaining the grounds and all sorts of odd jobs we find!

You will likely see Jarrod on a Monday or whenever we have some bigger jobs or special occasions.

He is multi-talented and we are very grateful to have him join our team!!

'Home' Perfomance

On Thursday 18th August we caught the bus into the city for a whole school excursion to see ‘Home’, a performance by Patch Theatre and Restless Dance Theatre. The show was an exploration of our imagination and what it means to belong. Amazingly we had not one, not two but THREE of our students lucky enough to go up on stage and be a part of the performance.  It was such a fun, interactive experience going to the theatre, thank you Tuula for organising it!!

October Vacation Care

Hopefully by now you have all seen that Felixstow Community School OSHC will be running their very first Vacation Care program in the Term 3 school holidays.

The Vacation Care program and consent forms are available on the Skoolbag app under the OSHC tab, the school website or alternatively hard copies are available from the Front Office and OSHC room.

For any questions of enquiries please contact director Hannah at: hannah.gustard695@schools.sa.edu.au

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

News from Primary!

Students have been working with a buddy (Laura's class paired with Lauren's class) to co-construct a biographical text on a First Nations person. Students have been demonstrating the 6C’s of Collaboration, Communication and Critical thinking. Here’s what some students have said about the process;

Joelle - this is a different way of writing and it’s more fun and I like sharing the workload.

India - I am not used to writing with a buddy but I have a good partner who is helping me to find information.

Allan - this way of writing is good because we can find more information about Uncle Jack Charles. We have collaborated and communicated well during our lessons

Juniors

Hello from the Juniors!

In week 6, we had a visit from Aunty Janice and her granddaughter Emma as part of our Inquiry learning We are connected through people, place and culture. We spent the lesson making beaded bracelets and necklaces while learning about Aunty Janice’s culture and story as a Buandig woman.

“I learnt about respecting other people and different cultures” - Charlotte

”I felt really calm while I was doing the beading” - Logan

At the end of their visit we surprised them by singing the Niina Marni song (Kaurna Welcome song) which we only finished learning a week ago!

Dear Felixstow Students and Families,

CBCA BOOK WEEK

This year our amazing Year 6's organised our Book Week Parade and what a fantastic job they did! The theme was Dreaming With Eyes Open, we are always blown away by the creative costumes displayed and this year was no different, we saw superheroes, mythical creatures, princesses and a whole lot more!!!

We started the day with a whole school parade, each class got a chance to showcase their costume and tell us who they were dressed as. Afterwards families joined us for fruit break enjoying tea, coffee and biscuits. Staff were so impressed with the effort and creativity students' went to with their costumes they were treated to a surprise of hot chips!

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for the parade, it was so special to be able to share it with you in person.

eSafety Parents

New learning resources to help your family stay safe online

eSafety has released new resources to help parents and carers from all backgrounds protect their families online.

The new videos and advice sheets from the Online Safety for Every Family suite of resources covers how to:

·       get started with social media

·       enjoy safer online gaming

·       help your child if they are bullied online.

To make sure more families can start a conversation with their children about online safety, the information comes in multiple languages - English, Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Tamil and Dari.

Use parental controls to keep your family safe online

Many games, apps and social media sites now come with parental controls, with Snapchat the latest to launch an in-app Family Center to support young people to have safer experiences online.

eSafety’s parental controls video helps parents and carers understand the benefits and limitations, the different controls you can access and what safety settings to use when there are no parental controls available.
