Letter from the Acting Principal

Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week begins this Friday 27 May. This year’s theme is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’.  This annual event is a reminder of our ongoing journey as an Australian society, and is an opportunity to make reconciliation a real part of our story and our future.

On Monday 30th May at 2:30pm our whole school will participate in a National Sorry Day Prayer Service. You are most welcome to attend and students are encouraged to wear red, black and yellow on this day.

Professional Development Day

Today is a Professional Learning Day for our staff in the area of Mathematics learning and teaching.   We have invited Michele Klooger to facilitate this day with a focus on the area of cognitively demanding tasks.

Michele is a lecturer at Monash University and her research interests include:

  • using pedagogy that engages all children in challenging tasks with appropriate timely scaffolding and questioning to maintain a high cognitive demand threshold for all.
  • flexible grouping structures that do not exclude children from opportunities to learn important mathematics concepts.
  • enabling and extending prompts to support students who are experiencing difficulty and those who require extension of the task.
  • learning mathematics through inquiry. The use of structured inquiry-based pedagogy, focussing on the key ideas in mathematics.

These days are so important in supporting our staff to continue to deepen their knowledge of high impact teaching strategies that are supported by the latest research.  Our Learning Support Officers also participate in these days working and learning alongside our teachers.  We look forward to a day of rich learning with Michele.

Working Bee & Maintenance Jobs

Our Working Bee which was scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled.  The tasks that were scheduled to be on the list are not yet ready to begin so we will postpone them for the time being.

I would like to thank Eli C’s father who responded to our request in last week's newsletter and  has kindly offered to clean and stain the decking outside the Year 1/2 rooms.

If we have a parent that is an electrician or a glazier I would love some old air conditioners that are mounted in the windows of our portables removed and new glass installed.  Please email me
udecorrado@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au if you think you may be able to help.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for school children up to Year 9, and children enrolled in an early childhood centre or program.

The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning. For students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience an allocated number of books based upon their year level during the reading period.  We have registered our school each year and encourage families to sign up and support their children reach the set targets by 2nd September.

Children and students who complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Victoria.

To enrol your child in the Premier's Reading Challenge please see  the attached form.

Introducing our Staff.......

Julie Gellie - Learning Support Officer

I have been a member of the St John the Baptist Parish community all my life, having attended school at St John’s, as well as my four children. I am extremely fortunate to have worked at St John’s for a number of years, across all year levels, as well as the library. I get immense joy from witnessing and assisting the students achieve their full potential and being part of a collaborative caring team. When not at school I love spending time with my family and in the garden.

Tess Farry - Physical Education Teacher

Whether I am playing or watching, sport has provided me with some of the most memorable moments of my life. It has given me the opportunity to travel, meet incredible people and make important lifelong friendships. I will happily watch any sport, drawn in by the competition, but I am especially passionate about cricket and the AFL – go Blues! In my time, I have also played a number of sports; however, my heart definitely belongs to netball.

I am passionate about teaching sport because I hope all children get the opportunity to experience the joy that sport can bring to their lives. Sport is character building, providing children with countless opportunities to learn about themselves during crushing lows and exhilarating highs.

I am excited about providing students with the opportunity to experience a variety of sporting activities at St John the Baptist.

National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day is a day when we pause to remember the Stolen Generations of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  In many ways, it is a difficult day for Australia, as we reflect on the violence and injustice of our history and consider what it means for the present. Yet, it is an important day, especially for us as Christians. It allows space for repentance, truth-telling, restoration and hope for unity.

On Monday 30th May at 2.30pm all parents and friends are invited to attend our Sorry Day Prayer Service which will be led by our Year 3/4 students in our School Hall.

All classes will attend and we hope you can join us too.
