Term 3 Week 8

News from the South

We would like to acknowledge Goulburn as an important meeting place that was inhabited, at first contact with Europeans, by the Gundungurra and Ngunawal people who are the traditional custodians of this land. We would like to pay respect to Elders both past, present and future, also extending that respect to other Aboriginal people present today on the land in which we meet, work and live.

Schools are operating full time while actively following health advice.

Schools continue to be safe, and operations are in line with Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health advice. All students should be learning on campus unless they are unwell or have a medical certificate to support their absence.

The activities that are permitted at school will be conducted in a way that is safe and appropriate in the current environment. Those that remain on hold will be reviewed during the term and will recommence when appropriate based on health and other relevant advice. More information can be found at :

Spring has sprung

With just over 2 1/2 weeks of Term 3 remaining and the warmer weather trying to break through we remind our students that they must ensure that they are wearing compliant school uniform only. We have a number of non school jumpers being worn which is not acceptable. We also need to remind students that a school bucket hat or wide brimmed had must be worn when in play areas that have no shade or cover. We are a Sun Safe school and cannot stress enough the importance of wearing a hat and sunglasses if you have a pair. Sunglasses can be purchased at the school office for $5.00.

SCHOOL FENCE

Goulburn South will soon enjoy the safety of a security fence on the schools boundaries. After many discussions and applications the Department of Education have granted the school full security fencing. This decision will put at ease the minds of our parents, staff and community as we have some students who have left school grounds and find themselves confronted with busy roads and traffic, our grounds are also accessible to non authorised persons. Goulburn South prides itself on the safety of our students and the fence will give everyone that peace of mind.

SOCIAL MEDIA

It is with regret that we have to raise the issue of students using  social media. Primary school students  are not of a legal age to access platforms such as Face Book, TikTok, Snap Chat just to name a few. The legal age for using this type of social media is 13. Being safe online is extremely important. Parents need to be in control of what their children are using and viewing. Resources are available online for parents and carers to ensure that their children are safe. The website listed https://www.esafety.gov.au/kids/be-an-esafe-kid provides families with information on how to be safe online.

There is also a Google App that can help parents and carers to observe and monitor the activity on any device that their children use. This app is free and can be downloaded from the following website https://families.google.com/familylink/

Goulburn South "Friendship Park"

A dedicated committee of school staff and a P & C representative have been working hard behind the scenes to bring a project so close to their hearts come to life. The "Goulburn South Friendship Park" is an inclusive and safe new playground space and a welcome addition to the existing play equipment, it will bring fun, and happiness to our students and the extended community. Construction of the "Friendship Park" has commenced with earthworks being completed at the beginning of September. The playground  will feature many interactive and educational pieces of equipment such as climbing equipment, soft pour snakes & ladders, sound tubes as well as sensory equipment bongo drums, free standing chimes, telescope, game boards and a basketball stand.  The new equipment will be located in the bottom playground alongside the current play equipment.

This project has been planned since February this year, then COVID 19 became a worldwide headline. This did not deter our committee and during the lockdown period, grant applications were lodged and letters mailed to organisations requesting financial assistance. Quotes for the design and layout of the new playground were sourced and the idea slowly looked like it would become a reality. The committee has been successful in securing grant money and funding from the Veolia Mulwaree Trust, Wendy Tuckermans Office and the Goulburn Lions Club and our own Goulburn South P & C. These organisations have been generous with their funding and the school greatly appreciates the support from our community. The committee are also grateful for the financial support that has also been given by the school and the school Principal Ann Patchett. There is still a bit of work to be done, however we will keep everyone posted on the developments as they happen.

Book Week Celebrations 2020

Our 2020 Book Week celebrations will still be happening, although our celebrations will be somewhat different due to COVID-19 restrictions. Unfortunately parents are unable to attend, however that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate in style.

Our Book Character Parade for students only will be happening on Friday 23rd October.  Plan your costumes now! Details to follow.

Our Book Fair will still go ahead for students only on Friday 23rd October. Students will have an opportunity to preview the wonderful selection of books and complete their wish list to take home. Parents and grandparents will be able to view these wish lists and encourage their children to purchase a book and support their Library. Students may also like to think about donating a book from the Fair to the school Library to add some new and current books to our collection. Final details are still being organised so watch this space!

Looking forward to celebrating Book Week 2020.

K/6R News

K-6R have been having lots of fun learning about Length this week. We have been practicing measuring items using both informal and formal units. We enjoyed measuring items in our classroom including ourselves with dinosaur footprints. We are looking forward to a paper plane flying challenge on Friday where we will measure the length our planes fly.

We have also had a big focus in K-6R on positive talk and kindness. We talked about the quote 'Spread kindness like confetti' and thought of kind words and phrases to explain each other, even Miss Bullock and Gina joined in. It was really nice sharing what we like about each other and what we appreciate about our classmates and teachers. Miss Bullock turned our words into posters and we displayed them at our classroom entrance so we have a daily reminder of how wonderful we all are!

5/6B News

Hello from 5/6B! We have been very busy in class over the last few weeks. We have been learning about explanation texts, and will be creating posters for the last couple of weeks of Term 3 on a topic of our choice.

Last week, we coloured in and decorated cards for Father’s Day. Thank you to Miss B for providing us with many card options to choose from.

Visual Art is a favourite subject of many students. A couple of weeks ago, we made some fun, colourful toucans to brighten up our room!
