PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Festival of Choral Music Sold Out!

On Tuesday night, our stage 3 choir performed with distinction at the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House as part of the state-wide Festival of Choral Music organised by the Arts Unit. Our senior students combined with 33 schools in the Australis Concert to entertain a 'full house' of admiring parents and friends, teachers and principals.  It was inspiring  to see the our senior singers enjoying the performing arts on this scale. (see photo). I would like to sincerely thank our music teachers Kathy Xenos and Beck Cantlay for their commitment to lead and nurture our young performers and to every parent who supported their children to enable them to take part.

NSW PSSA State Athletics Championship

Congratulations to Sam Allport, Sienna Shipp, Julian Doyle, Amber Worden, Leo Balmond, Natalia Giannichronis, Xavi Modena, Isaac O'Brien and Cameron Barry who represented Sydney East region at the NSW State Athletics Championship held at Sydney Olympic Park Atheltics Centre this week.

Our young athletes achieved outstanding results in the heats and semi-finals representing the region and Drummoyne PS with great pride.  Sincere thanks to our parents for their dedicated support to enable the students to compete at zone, regional and the State carnival this week.

Teachers Make a World of Difference

Next Friday we will celebrate World Teachers’ Day in Australia! It’s a great opportunity for us to acknowledge our hardworking teachers across our school and celebrate their dedication and commitment to our students. On your behalf, I would like to sincerely thank the teachers of Drummoyne PS for their faithful service to the school throughout 2022.

Kindergarten Orientation

I would like to thank all of our 2023 kindergarten parents for joining us on Wednesday to continue the transition to school journey for our youngest ones. This is such a pivotal aspect of transition to have parents and the school coming together and sends a powerful message to the children of the importance of education.

The next phase of transition will be the afternoon visits by pre-schoolers over the next two weeks and we look forward to having them join us.

Thank you to Assistant Principal Sujetha Abeynaike for organising the transition to school program for us.

Reminder October P&C Meeting

The October P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday, 25 October, commencing at 7:30pm in the school library. We hope you can join us.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Mathematics Conference

This week a team of five teachers attended a two-day Mathematics Conference. Our teachers have had the opportunity to learn together, gaining the skills and strategies needed to lead improvement in maths. The conference was run by Anita Chin, an educator with more than 25 years' experience in maths education. Anita's practical approach has made her one of the most influential experts in primary education in Australia. We look forward to learning from the team to improve our teaching practice.

Change of Contact Details

To ensure that the school is able to contact families, would you please let us know throughout the year if there are any changes to your home address or phone contact details.

It is also important for us to have your current correct email address to ensure you receive important notifications, the newsletter and other alerts.

Thank you for staying in touch with us.

Class of the Week - 5C

Students in class 5C have been showing their creativity using a combination of charcoal and black texta to create Halloween artworks. They used a directed drawing technique to achieve the results and we are delighted to share these with you.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures continuing in Term 4

As we move into the warmer months, NSW Health has advised that despite the steady decline in COVID-19 cases in the community there is a continued risk of new COVID-19 waves of transmission into summer. The department is continuing with the following baseline COVID-smart measures throughout Term 4:

  • Students, staff and families are to stay home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms. RATs are available through contacting the school.
  • Students, staff and visitors to the school are encouraged to wear masks.
  • Wearing of masks on buses and transport to and from camps and excursions is strongly encouraged.
  • Staff and students are encouraged to maintain up to date vaccinations, including COVID-19 booster shots for anyone eligible.

Non-COVID school based vaccinations

Due to the ongoing pandemic and stay-at-home orders that were in place over the previous two years, NSW Health has noted that some children and young people have missed out on the non-COVID school-based vaccination programs that they would have taken part in. Parents and carers are reminded to make sure that all of their child’s vaccinations are up-to-date, including other, non-COVID vaccinations.
If unsure about whether their child has missed any vaccinations, parents and carers should speak to their GP or go to NSW Health’s Immunisation requirements in primary and secondary schools.
Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing  symptoms of COVID-19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses that require treatment and management by a doctor.
For more information on vaccinations refer to our Vaccination guidelines for staff or the Australian Government's COVID-19 vaccines.

They make memories and always make futures

They're sharing stories and playing games, learning and experiences

We grow big like trees and make friends for high school or primary

GENERAL NEWS

Stage 3 Choir at the Festival of Choral Music Australis Concert

On Tuesday, 18th October 2022, the Stage 3 choir attended the Festival of Choral Music Australis Concert. They had been preparing all year for the event, rehearsing an 11-song repertoire each week, practising harmonies, timing and singing together as a group. Students arrived at the Sydney Opera House for one final rehearsal and prepared for the concert during the day, singing with prestigious bands and orchestras, and ensuring that they sounded their best by watching their conductor, Luke Wallace. Many students enjoyed a lovely dinner in the city before returning for the concert at night.

The concert went splendidly; the singing of the combined 900 students from various schools sounded absolutely magical as everyone sang perfectly in time with all the nuances they had been practising. It was fantastic to have such a huge audience in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall to appreciate all the hard work that had been put in to prepare for the concert. Students were lucky enough to also watch a number of bands, orchestras, choirs and soloists perform some beautiful music, as well as singing their own songs. The choir particularly loved singing their favourite song, Corrugated Iron, which was a showstopping end to the first half of the night.

It was a spectacular evening the students will not soon forget. With any luck, the Stage 3 Choir will be invited to perform again next year.

2023 school travel applications are now open

Applications for student travel in 2023 open from Monday 10 October 2022. Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023 can apply now.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.
