2022 Term 2 Issue 4

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Term 2 has got up and running quickly with our Inquiry this term “I can transform waste to make change”. This topic will see us focus on sustainability, with students taken through a design process to create ideas to transform waste. We are always excited to see students get their creative thinking hats on and use their skills in critical and collaborative thinking to put their ideas into action!

This term we welcome David (Dave) Cecchi to our SSO team. We are always keen to see what new staff can bring to our team and we are looking forward to getting to know Dave and his skills. Students have quickly introduced themselves and supported Dave to jump right in! Read more about Dave later in the newsletter.

Covid continues to impact on us and we have had several staff impacted personally and also in their classrooms, we expect this will continue for the foreseeable future. There is much difficulty in finding relievers at the moment, in all schools, however we always try our regulars first and for extended leave try to reduce the number of staff coming into each class where we can. Due to increased demand we have had to start building our pool of relievers by trying out some new faces. We have been really impressed by students’ flexibility, welcoming and openness to new staff and changes to programs at often quite short notice! We are also grateful to all our families who have been vigilant in keeping students at home if unwell and continuing to test and report any positive cases. This helps to keep ourselves and community safe.

As always, we have a busy term ahead. We are hoping to move closer again to operating how we would like to with our families so keep your eye out for upcoming opportunities to volunteer and be involved in supporting our school and students (including another Bunnings BBQ, possible working bee and more!)

Cheers Skye 😊

Welcome David

This term we are very excited to welcome David (Dave) to our team of SSO's. David is currently studying a Masters of Teaching at UniSA and will be working with us 2 days per week supporting the primary classrooms. He is a fully qualified personal trainer with over 12 years of experience. David's work in health and fitness has given him the opportunity to work with those aged between 5 and 100 years old, both mainstream and those with additional needs.

David has a strong passion for sport and physical activity at a social and district level, having played numerous sports and spending his spare time surfing, hiking, riding or working on his cars.

ANZAC Day

As a school we decided to acknowledge ANZAC Day in our own special way during the first week of term 2.

In the Primary classes we were lucky enough to have war memorabilia brought in from Skye and Lauren who both had grandparents once serve in WWII. There was a collection of medals, uniforms, photographs, newspaper articles and some other interesting pieces spread out around the room. Students were given the opportunity to touch, read and hold these very special items giving them a small insight into life as an Australian soldier.

In the Junior classes we read ANZAC Ted and had the fun, creative task of designing a new uniform for him, we also made delicious ANZAC cookies as a part of homegroup.

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

There has been a lot of talk about our new novel study - Wonder. We have been introduced to August (Auggie) Pullman, a 5th grader who is about to begin school. The students have had lots of questions which has led to some in-depth conversations about Auggie's facial disfigurement and how his condition may impact upon him and his everyday life.

"Why blend in when you were born to stand out" is my favourite quote - Elene

"Differences don't matter" - Jai

"August is just a normal boy who does normal stuff" - India

"I like that it teaches us that differences don't matter" - Runah

Students in Lauren's class drew their own interpretations of August while Laura's class are creating individual padlets to summarise each chapter

Juniors

This term for inquiry our central idea is 'I can transform waste to make change'. After deciding what waste actually was and the different types of waste, we had an audit of our classroom bin. After looking at all the waste that had been thrown away in our landfill bin, we sorted the waste and discovered that most of it should have been put into other bins. The other bins we have in our classroom are a recycling bin, soft plastic bin and compost bin. Next, we did a lunchbox audit to see how much waste was in it and think about ways we could reduce this waste. To help us understand about waste more we have watched a video showing us where different types of wastes goes, sorted pictures of waste into the right bins and compared the types of waste we might find in our classroom compared to the staff room.

Resource Hub

Dear Felixstow Students and Families

Welcome back, I hope you all enjoyed the holidays. The first three weeks of term 2 has seen the arrival of new furniture, the start of Mindful May activities and the presentation of prizes for the Bunnings Painting Competition.

Bunnings Painting Competition

Last term, ten students were randomly chosen from across the school to participate in the Bunnings Windsor Gardens painting competition. Their pictures were taken to the store and displayed to the public, who then voted for their favourite.

We are delighted to announce that one of our students, Tori Clee (Nicole’s class) was voted the winner of the competition – Congratulations Tori we are so proud of you. On Thursday 12th May, Kaz (Bunnings Activity Organiser) visited our school to present Tori and all the students who entered the competition their prize. Tori received a Bunnings gift card and $200 to donate to her chosen charity, Paws & Claws.

All the students who participated (Tori, Archie, Aaima, Zofia, Willa, Kira, Amelia, Beatrice, India, Runah, Zahra, Elene) gave up their own time to create their paintings and were joyous as they painted. Well done to you all.

Mindful May

The Resource Hub is starting Term 2 with Mindful May, where we are offering 3 weeks of daily mindfulness activities which will take place during break times. Activities include, mindful colouring, yoga, gardening, nature journaling, reading, eating & walking in the Forest and Indian Dancing. This was a great success last year, so we are hoping that it will be as popular with the students this year. We would like to thank Estheera (a student in Laura’s class) for agreeing to lead the Indian Dance activity and also to staff who have given up their break time to lead activities; Di, Kamal, Jenny, Camille and Kelly.

Premier Reading Challenge

About the Premier’s Reading Challenge

Most students should have received a PRC record form last term, while Tuula’s class will receive theirs this week. For term 2, the PRC offers two further competitions the Indonesian Competition and the Stem Reading and Design Challenge.

Indonesian Competition

As part of an ongoing cultural and business exchange between South Australia and West Java, students are invited to participate in the PRC Indonesian Competition. Students need to read a book about Indonesia or in Indonesian then write a review about the book using one of the templates provided. Every entry will receive and Indonesian Leader’s Reading Challenge certificate while the 50 best reviews will receive an Indonesian Leaders Reading Challenge medal. The Resource Hub has 3 Indonesian books that students can loan for 1 week only. Local libraries should also have books that students can borrow.

STEM Reading and Design Challenge

The PRC challenges students to read about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). This year there are two new additional themes, nature (in South Australia) and space (human spaceflight, the planet and universe, satellites, space travel and astronomy). To enter students need to read a STEM, nature or space themed book and then complete the age category project;

Year Project

R-2 Draw a picture in response to the PRC book the student reads.

3-5 Plan an invention (description, drawing) inspired by the students PRC reading

6-9 Design a STEM poster related to the students PRC reading, to inspire interest in science related fields

All students who participate will receive a certificate and there are addition prizes (e.g. passes to the Adelaide Zoo, Cleland Wildlife Park and Science Alive!) for the best individual entry and runner up in each of the categories

The closing date is Friday 8th July (week 10, term 2). Entries are to be scanned and sent to;
