MATHEMATICS MATTERS!

In October, the NSW Mathematics Strategy 2025 was announced. The strategy supports teaching and learning so that students develop the mathematical skills and understanding they need to succeed in life. the key message is maths matters. Mathematics gives students the opportunity to develop skills in problem-solving, analysing, reasoning, justifying, collaborating, questioning, interpreting, proving, wondering and noticing. Students learn to communicate in words, symbols, models, diagrams and in ways that are so succinct they can be applied by anyone, anywhere irrespective of the language they speak. The launch of the NSW Mathematics Strategy 2025 has been very timely for us at NLHIS, as yesterday, the teachers engaged in Professional Learning in maths assessment. The training really emphasised asking the right questions to see how students are learning and giving students the opportunity to express their thinking in different ways. We will be looking at this more closely over the coming weeks as we move into our reporting period.

The other aspect of this mathematics campaign is the release of the Everyday Maths Hub- an exciting new online resource for parents and carers.

The hub is  something we will explore more in our new school plan, as supporting learning at home was an area for improvement identified in our Situational Analysis. For now, I encourage parents to go into the hub and take a look around. I know all classes have just finished units on money and there is a section dedicated to money and how you can support learning about it at home in a fun and practical way.

Feel free to put any of the ideas that you have explored with your children on SeeSaw to share with your teachers.

At New Lambton Heights Infants School we acknowledge that we teach, learn and play together on the traditional country of the Awabakal people, who are the custodians of this land. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Wellbeing

ANTI-BULLYING

This week we are talking about preventing bullying and ways we can work together as a team (like Yuyi the ant) to prevent bullying at NLHIS. It only take one good friend to help and if we live up to our values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best, then our school will be a safe and happy place where bullying is not tolerated.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

This week is all about device free moments. Students have discussed times when it is appropriate and not appropriate to be on their devices. This includes:

* Safety

* Respect for People

* Concentration

* Sleep

Students are asked to create some family rules for device free moments. This would be a perfect time to discuss this with your kids!

SECOND STEP

All K-2 students will be following the same lessons for the next 4 weeks and the theme is Emotion Management.

Everyone feels lots of different feelings. We feel these feelings in our bodies. Some feelings are comfortable, and others are uncomfortable, but all of them are OK. We are asking students to pay attention to their feelings this week. Pay attention to clues in our bodies and in the situation to help you understand how you feel. Try and name your feelings.

NLHIS is on Facebook!

We now have a school Facebook page for you to share with your friends and family. In addition to our website, the main purpose of this page is to connect to our wider community and to showcase our beautiful school.

Search Facebook for 'New Lambton Heights Infants School' or click on this link.

P&C News

P&C NEWS

 We are looking to raise money for one final project this year, a sensory path and garden located at the back of the toilet block and including the big tree. This path will lead out to the play area and allow students to explore their senses as they go with different textures under their feet and with selective planting to touch and smell. The seating around the big gum tree will provide a quiet play space as well as an outdoor learning area. We are hoping to start at the beginning of December and be finished by the end of term.

 To keep up to date with P&C activities and news, please follow our Facebook page; ‘New Lambton Heights Infants P & C’.

CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA

This Christmas we are providing some gifting and activity options for the festive season to raise funds to contribute to the sensory garden and path.

Firstly, we have Gingerbread House Kits available in Original, Gluten Free and Chocolate Flavours. Each kit is $35 and includes the Gingerbread House pieces, royal icing, cello and ribbon and baseboard. Thank you to those who have already placed orders (a special shout out to Mrs Dowman who has lots of family and friends ordering!). Thank you for your support!

Orders close 25 November 2020, with an estimated delivery date of 7 December 2020.

Visit our website to purchase your Gingerbread House Kit! https://new-lambton-heights-infants-school-pc-association.s…

  Secondly, Jolly Soles Socks are at school and ready for distribution from this week! We are looking for families to volunteer to take home a box (or boxes if you're super keen) and sell them to your family, neighbours, work colleagues, or anyone who wants to join the fun with a silly pair of socks. A box includes 14 pairs of fun and colourful socks in a variety of sizes, with something to please everyone. One pair of socks will sell for $6, and with your help, we could raise a significant amount to help us towards our Sensory Path goal.

If you are willing to take home a box, they are now available. Please email the school newlambhti-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au and Mrs Hughes will organise a box/es to be sent home with your child/ren.

Miss Murphy's Magnificent Mural

Miss Murphy is our sensational SLSO who has been working in KBC. She is also all the way from Ireland. She is also an art teacher in Ireland. So we have put her artistic skills to the test ... actually she came up with the concept for a giant mural of Yuyi. Inspired by the bottle top mural, she is in the process of creating a mural made form shells. She has had plenty f little helpers along the way and we can't wait for the final result.
