Pelican Flat Public School Newsletter

Term 3, Week 3

Acknowledgement of Country

Pelican Flat Public School acknowledges the traditional lands of the Awabakal people we teach and learn on and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

From the Principal

This week is Education week and provides us an opportunity to showcase the fabulous opportunities that NSW Public Education provides for students. The theme for this year is “Creating futures- education changing lives”. Pelican Flat Public School provides a variety of high quality learning opportunities for students every day. This has been challenging over the past two and a half years, but our school community has shown amazing resilience to maintain continuity of learning for our students whilst supporting their emotional wellbeing. I am proud to lead a school where staff and community work closely together to support students to reach their goals. By sharing responsibility for student achievement, we have built a solid foundation for student success.

As a result of the current 4 week COVID blitz we are holding our Education Extravaganza in Week 6. As part of our Risk Assessment all adults attending are asked to sign in using the QR codes that are available on the gates throughout the school and will be available on the doors of your child's classrooms also.

This coming week, Stage 3 will be attending their overnight excursion to Bathurst with Blacksmiths Public School. We hope they have a fantastic time and thank you to Mr Elliott for giving up his time to attend the excursion for our students.

We also have students from each Stage attending the Zone Public Speaking Competition. We are so proud of their efforts to get this far and wish them all the best on the day.

Zone athletics carnival is being held on Wednesday 10 August. Good luck to all students attending. Miss McClellan will be with the students on the day to assist and supervise.

I would like to thank Miss Lawry for organising our pyjama day to raise money for children in foster care. Thank you to everyone for helping Miss Lawry reach her goal of $150. Well done everyone on such a wonderful effort.

We are excited to announce that we will be moving to a more streamlined communication application for our school for staff and the community. You may have already received a SMS text message at approximately 10am when your child has been absent from school.  You can either call the school to explain your child's absence or reply directly to that SMS and this reason will be recorded against your child's attendance. Therefore it is very important for us to have up-to-date information in our system.  Could you please notify the office of any change of details as soon as possible.  Details are: mobile phone number, email address, home address and emergency contacts.

Please send to pelicanflt-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Student Goal setting

It's important to engage individual students in goal setting, monitoring and reflecting on their learning. Student at Pelican Flat Public School work on individual goals through their daily learning and personal achievements. Teachers provide regualr and meaningful feedback to our students to support them to grow and achieve their goals.

Research has shown that having a a few goals to work on will support students to achieve greater success.

Therefore, we have streamlined our goal setting processes to be focused on ENGLISH,  MATHS and a PERSONAL goal. This English focus allows students to set their goal in a wider range of areas such as reading, writing, spelling, handwriting etc and helps students to target areas more specifically. Teacher will continue to work on individual student goals for reading and writing.

From week 6, student goal awards will reflect the students achievements in English, Maths and their Personal Goals.

Attendance

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent.

Young people below the age of 17 who have completed Year 10 must be:

  • in school, or registered for home schooling

  • in approved education or training, such as a traineeship, apprenticeship or TAFE

  • in full-time paid employment (average 25 hours a week)

  • in a combination of work, education and/or training (average of 25 hours a week combined).

Students 17 years and over who are enrolled in school must attend school regularly to meet HSC course requirements.

As a parent or carer, you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day when they are of compulsory school age. You must explain all absences to the school within 7 days.

For more information about compulsory school attendance, visit:

Research indicates that:

  • Regular attendance at school is fundamental to student learning. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve educational success and increase their career and life options.
  • Student attendance has been identified as an important aspect of a student’s wellbeing and failure to receive an education has been identified as a risk of harm factor.
  • Poor patterns of attendance place students at risk of not achieving their educational, social and psychological potential and disadvantage them in the quality of choices they are able to make in later life situations.
  • Communities benefit from students who regularly attend school and are achieving. These benefits include greater student safety, community wellbeing, and a sense of connectedness for all.
  • Schools, families, and communities can work together to send a strong collective message about the importance of going to school.
  • Promoting the benefits of regular attendance to students, teachers, early childhood centre staff, parents, and community groups will help create a culture where regular school attendance is the norm.

Uniform

If you have any school uniforms your child has grown out of, we would appreciate you donating them to the second hand pool. Not only do the funds we raise from the sale of these items go towards supporting the school, it provides opportunities for families to purchase cheaper uniform items for students.

Opening Hours - Wednesday morning 8:40am to 9:10am (please note there may be a change of day for uniform shop). If you are unable to make this time, please email your order to pelicanpnc@gmail.com and make payment into the P&C bank account (see order form for details). Your order will be filled on the next Friday and given to your child. Our Uniform shop is run by our P&C. Under no circumstances will the school be able to complete uniform orders.

Please be mindful that we do only open and fill orders one day a week. Please be mindful that if the weather was to change and your child needed tracksuit pants, a jacket or jumper you need to be prepared early.
