From the Principal's Desk

Debutante Ball

The South Grafton High School Debutante Ball held last Saturday evening was a huge success and I would like to thank Yvonne Cameron, Deborah Dewberry and their band of helpers for organising the event. I have attended quite a few Debutante Balls in my time and I can say, without hesitation, that this was one of the best. I was particularly impresses with the Debutantes and their partners who presented themselves in a confident, graceful manner. They danced the night away, enthusiastically encouraging everyone to share in the spirit of the occasion.

Uniform

I have taken the opportunity this term to speak to year groups about the importance of being in uniform every day. This is something that I am passionate about because it creates such a positive tone across the whole school. Students who are in uniform, feel like they belong to our school and are less likely to misbehave. It is clear from the feedback that I have received from members of the community that they have noticed our students are wearing their uniforms with pride. In order to help with the cost of purchasing new uniforms we are having a sale next week.

Attendance – It’s not okay to stay away

Attendance, or lack thereof is always a concern, because staying away from school makes it much harder for students to achieve a years’ worth of growth in learning from a year’s worth of teaching. At present, our attendance is tracking below 85% in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11. Students who regularly miss days at school struggle to keep up with their peers academically and often find it difficult to maintain social connections. If you have any concerns about getting your child to school, please contact us so that we can help you.

Maths Excursion

You may or may not be aware that Mathematics is my teaching area and that I am very excited to have a group of Year 8 students heading off to Armidale to represent us at the New England Mathematics Association, Year 8 Mathematics Day. Good luck to all students and I hope you have a great time, both educationally and socially.

Mathematics Tutoring

Some parents have made enquires about outside Mathematics Tutoring for their students.

Benefits of Mathematics Tutoring:

*building confidence

*extra explanation of content not understood in class

*greater speed and accuracy in answering question

*focussed learning time

*setting goals and managing due dates

Feel free to phone Mrs O’Connor (Head Teacher Mathematics) for a Senior Student Tutors’ contact details if you are interested.
