Normanhurst Public School Vision Statement

Normanhurst Public School is an inclusive and collaborative community dedicated to meeting student needs. We seek to prepare our students to adapt and thrive in a dynamic society by providing diverse and innovative experiences.

Acknowledgement of Country - Normanhurst 5B

Let us remember, beneath the soles of our feet and the concrete of our school, lies the land that is, was and always will be a part of the Eora Nation. As we meet here at Normanhurst, we acknowledge elders past and present. Together, we recognise the footprints of those who have come before us and the unique role of Aboriginal people in the life of this region.

Collaboration with Turramurra HIgh School

A few weeks ago staff from NPS visited Turramurra High School where they observed a variety of lessons. Last week the year 7 Maths teachers from Turramurra High School taught maths to our Stage 3 students. The students and staff found the experience most valuable. We look forward to continuing this partnership with Turramurra High School as we strengthen our relationship with the aim of improving the year 6 transition to high school experience.

Peer Support

This week in Peer Support…

We had the final session of the Peer Support module ‘Moving Forward’. Students reflected on what they have learned over the past seven sessions. The students made a cube to remind them to draw on their strengths, achievements and people who support them when faced with challenging situations. These protective factors promote confidence and motivate students to approach new situations where they can then apply the Pause, Plan, proceed Model.

During the week we encourage you to…

Engage in a discuss with your child that encourages them to reflect on their experiences and learning throughout Peer Support and how they will use what they have learned.

Well done to all our Stage 3 leaders for delivering the program every week and for taking on this leadership opportunity. Preparing for sessions and delivering activities to a diverse group has also helped them to develop their own resilience.

Turramurra High School Visit

On Tuesday, four staff members from Turramurra High School came to teach Mathematics to our Stage 3 classes. It was a wonderful experience that gave our students a little taste of high school. They engaged in Year 7 content and the staff structured the lessons exactly as they would teach it to Year 7. The focus of the lesson was fractions and decimals as it is an area that can be challenging.

Student feedback on the session was extremely positive with many Year 6 students communicating their excitement and increased confidence around going to high school. It was a great opportunity to strengthen our connection with Turramurra HS and help our NPS students with their transition. We look forward to building the relationship between our schools further.

Here’s what some students had to say about the experience:

“Afterwards I felt a bit more confident about moving to High School” – Liv P

“It made me realise that High School isn’t going to be as difficult as I thought it would be” – Max J

“It was a relief to see how work is done in High School and to get an insight of the teachers” – Hoon K

“It was good to see the format of how we will learn” – Robbie L

“It was a fun learning experience and great see what areas I need to work on before going to high school” – Adrian G

“It made me feel less stressed about the transition to high school” – Elijah W

4D Quick Writes!

We were doing quick writes in 4D.  Students had 10 minutes to write in any style/format they liked.  They had to write whether they would like to have the ability to be able to control the weather or to talk to the animals. Here is Nathan's attempt, which I thought was fantastic!

NPS Band Update

What a fabulous morning at the showcase! It was wonderful to see both our Training Band and Concert Band perform and also to see how much they have improved over the year. Thanks to those parents who helped with setup and packing away afterwards.

Our delicious cookie dough fundraiser was an enormous success and we sold 265 tubs of dough, raising $1,060 which will go toward new band shirts. Prizes and cookie dough will be ready for collection on Friday 18 November from the school hall between 2:55pm and 5:00pm. Please remember to bring eskies or cooler bags as the cookie dough will be delivered frozen. All orders must be collected on the day as we do not have the capacity to store tubs in the fridge or freezer at school.

A few other dates for the diary:

● Re-registration forms for current Training Band and Concert Band members returning in 2023 are due on Friday 18 November.

● Concert Band will be performing at the school’s 150 year commemorative assembly on Thursday 1 December.

● Both Training Band and Concert Band will be playing on Presentation Day on 15th December.

● Both Training Band and Concert Band will be playing at the Christmas concert on the evening of 15 December – more info to come.

And finally, we are thrilled to see so many budding musicians keen to join the Training Band in 2023. Instrument allocation is almost complete, so keep your eyes peeled for an email soon. There are limited spots still available for limited instruments. Please contact us asap at npsbandinfo@gmail.com if you are interested.

What we’re doing at NOOSH!

Last week we celebrated space week, where we made some constellations out of marshmallows and toothpicks

Thank you!!!

NOOSH would like to thank parents /guardians for their cooperation in notifying us of your child’s absence. This really makes our job easier and ensures the safety of the children. Well done!

Vacation Care

Sneak Peek for Vacation Care! Vacation care bookings will open next week, in the meantime, take a sneak peek for what we have planned!

Here are some Vacation Care FAQ’s:

Why are excursions/water activities so expensive?

At NOOSH, we normally have a ratio of 1:15 – one educator to 15 children. During excursions, we lower our ratio to 1:10, to take into account the higher risk of taking children off site. For water activities the ratio is lowered even further to 1:5 to ensure children are adequately cared for in the water.

What time do I need to bring my children to NOOSH during vacation care?

For In-centre and Incursion days, we would like your child to be at NOOSH by 9:00am to ensure they don’t miss out on the fun events of the day!

Please note for excursions we ask that your child arrives no later than 8:30am to ensure that we leave for excursion on time. We want to avoid your child being disappointed that they can’t spend as much time there as they’d like!

What do I need to bring for vacation care?

Please ensure your child brings to NOOSH every day: - Morning tea and Lunch - Water Bottle - Broad-brimmed hat & sunscreen

- Wears solid closed shoes - spare pair of clothes - Wet weather gear - Clothes you can get messy in

We’re looking forward to having your family join us for an exciting Vacation Care!

If you have any questions, or need any assistance with anything related to NOOSH, please feel free to email us at: normanhurstoshc@outlook.com

Pymble store The Uniform Exchange - Year 6 Parents

Sue from the Uniform Exchanged reached out to us, see her message below!

We are eager to help your Year 6 parents by letting them know where they can find good quality, second hand uniforms for many North Shore High schools.

The Uniform Exchange in Pymble was created to help support parents financially and to encourage environmental sustainability.  This is achieved by selling preloved uniforms and text books for people within the school community.   The shop is open 6 days a week throughout the year, and we have over 13,000 quality second hand uniforms and text books in store, which cater to:

Abbotsleigh  -  Brigidine College  -  Barker  -  Knox  -  Loreto Normanhurst  -  NBCS  -  Pymble Ladies College  -  Ravenswood   -  Roseville College  -  St Leos  - The Kings School

The Uniform Exchange is dedicated to sustainability.  Our zero waste policy means we have saved over a quarter of a million uniforms and books from landfill, and benefitted underprivileged children in Africa, PNG, Cambodia, Fiji, Tonga and Vietnam.

Thank you for your help in forwarding our details to your Year 6 parents.
