Scarborough Primary School Newsletter - The Link

Issue 2 – 22 February 2019

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Thank you to all the parents and family members who attended the class information sessions held at the school on Wednesday evening. The sessions were very well attended by parents eager to find out what is happening in their child’s class and how to support their children’s education. The sessions outlined school and classroom routines, the curriculum, homework expectations and ways parents could be involved in helping their child’s learning at home. Parents were able to ask questions about the school and their child’s class. Many asked what they could do to support the teacher and the school. A big thank you to all the teachers who put a great amount of thought, care and effort into preparing for the evening.

A further opportunity to discuss the individual progress of your child with their teacher will be available in Weeks 9 and 10 of this term.

In the meantime, classroom teachers will be in contact with you, mainly via email to let you know about events and activities that may be occurring in your child’s classroom. Teachers will also be happy for you to set up an appointment with them to discuss your child’s progress or any queries you may have.

Whilst your classroom teacher is always the best person to speak to initially about any queries you may have, please don’t hesitate to contact me at Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au or on the school office number of 9341 1202 if there is anything you would like to discuss.

School Board

Earlier this week a notification was sent out on the SkoolBag app asking for nominations for vacant position on the school board.

We are currently looking to fill 3 parent representative vacancies. 2 will be of a 3 year tenure and one will be of a 2 year tenure.  You will need to be a parent at Scarborough Primary School in 2019 to be eligible.

Should there be more nominations than vacant positions, all parents will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates will then be asked to provide a 250 word brief and a portrait style photograph to include on the voting slip.  Members of the Board may hold office for a term not exceeding three years. New members of the Board will undertake training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board.  If you are interested, please email to Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au or submit in person to the front office, the nomination form which can be found in the School Board section of the school’s website. Nominations close at 3:00pm, Wednesday 6 March 2019.

The Board’s role is required to help the school deliver a quality education experience to our children by:

  • establishing and reviewing the goals, priorities and policies of the school at a strategic level;
  • supporting the development of our School Business Plan;
  • planning for and endorsing school budgets;
  • evaluating the performance of our school in achieving the goals set; and
  • promoting our school within the community.

More information on the Board can be found on our school website.  If you have any queries, please contact either myself or our Board Chairperson, Andrea Marchesi on 0409 068 010.

Home Reading Strategies

On Wednesday 6 March from 5.00pm - 6.00pm Debbie Potter, one of our Year 1/2 teachers and literacy leaders will be running a session for parents on Home Reading strategies. It is a great opportunity for parents to get an insight into how to best support your child in learning to read. Whilst primarily aimed at parents of Years 1's and 2's, all parents of junior primary aged children are welcome. No need to RSVP.

Before School Procedures

It has been great to see how active the Scarborough Community is, with many students walking, riding, skating or scooting to school in the mornings. To ensure the safety of all, students need to walk their bikes, scooters and skateboards to the racks provided once they enter the school grounds.  Students should not be arriving prior to 8:20am.  At 8:20am a staff member will be supervising students in the covered assembly area until 8:35am when classroom doors open. The siren will ring at 8:50am to signal the commencement of lessons. Out of hours school care is available on site should it be required.

Parent Workshop: Clearer Communication

Have you ever been guilty of avoiding difficult conversations, holding back saying what’s on your mind, reacting instead of responding or indulging in gossip?  Well, you are not alone.  These are some of the most common mistakes of communication and they can cause frustration, confusion and anger.

Join us as we explore these mistakes, the cost to our relationships and give you tips, tricks and hacks on how to improve your communication so your message gets through.  Whilst our focus is on developing better relationships and communication between parents and school, our participants have said they can apply our techniques to develop better communication in a variety of different relationships.

What participants have said

“It opened my eyes to things I do, that may be blocking good communication”

“Thanks, good tips that I can apply professionally and at home too!”

Come along from 2.30pm – 3.30pm to the school library. Your primary school aged children will be collected and supervised after the siren.  Entry is free, bookings recommended.  Bring a friend and go in the draw to win a door prize.

For bookings and more information head to Strength Heroes booking page

We have a Yr 4/5 team entering the Winter competition at Matthews Netball Centre.

*We are ideally looking for 1-2 more players to join this team*

Season runs May - August.  Games will be played Saturday mornings, and training one afternoon (day decided by team).

We have a Yr 2/3 group that are keen to enter a team in the Winter competition too.  However, we need 4 more players.  They can be from Scarborough Primary or surrounding schools.

Notes can be collected from the front office or accessed via the website:http://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/teaching-and-learning/incursions-and-excursions/

Make Gratitude Your Attitude

In Term 4 of 2018, we launched our Make Gratitude Your Attitude campaign.  Everyone within our community was encouraged to find the good around them and demonstrate gratitude for the people around us, the opportunities we have and the beautiful part of the world we live in.

A new year is upon us and I encourage you to continue with this positive attitude. Many experts identify gratitude as one of the key elements for building resilience and developing positive relationships within a community.

Please take the time to complete a thank you card which you can collect from the front office. You can then give the card directly to the recipient or post it in our mailbox  for delivery by our school captains.

Click on the link above to access our community calendar. This will keep you up-to-date with all that is happening around the school including assemblies, meetings and carnivals.

The calendar can be imported onto your device by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking 'Subscribe'.

Skoolbag is the Mobile App we use at Scarborough Primary School and it has been redesigned. It has all the features of the previous version, however a few things have been moved around for an improved experience.

Everyone will need to download the new app but for existing Skoolbag account holders you can use the same email and password to login. Follow the instructions below.

Shed 5 Needs You

Shed 5 is one of our most popular creative spaces. It was introduced to enable 'loose parts' play for all of our students, particularly during recess and lunch, but also as part of lessons. The Shed is filled with all sorts of goodies to feed the imagination, but regularly needs topping up. That's where you come in; if you are doing a clear out, please consider if you have items that could be used in Shed 5 and bring them along to the front office. Items we are looking for include (but not limited to):

  • pots and pans
  • plastic pipes
  • clean tyres - all sizes
  • ropes
  • tarps
  • lengths of fabric
  • cushions/blankets
  • off-cuts of carpet/fake grass

PLEASE ONLY SEND CLEAN, UNBROKEN ITEMS. PLEASE DO NOT SEND TOYS OR PLAY EQUIPMENT.
