Term 2 Week 10

News from the South

End of an interesting Term

As we come to the end of our second term we would like to again thank our families for supporting their children through what can only be called unusual times. When we began Term two there was a lot of uncertainty and angst as we continued to implement all procedures advised by the NSW government and Department of Education to safeguard ourselves and the community from COVID 19. Social distancing and restrictions were in place. Now, at the other end of the term we have a small sense of what life was like prior to these. However, we still need to remain vigilant. Our students have shown strength during the term and have adapted to this new norm. Hopefully as we progress through the year our normal timetable of events will also begin to return to something that represents normal.

On a positive note the majority of our students participated in our Incursion “Timmy and the Breakfast Band”. The Music Viva show “Timmy and The Breakfast Band” explores how music influences our actions, thoughts and emotions in an energetic pairing of live music and circus. This entertainment was brought to the students in class through ZOOM, the communication platform used by students and teachers during the weeks of Learning from Home. I am told on good authority that all the students thoroughly enjoyed the hour of musical entertainment.

We wish all of our families a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing our students in Term 3 - students return Tuesday 21st July.

Changes to Exit Gates

From the beginning of Term 3 we will be making a couple of changes to the exit gates that students leave from at the end of the day.  The gates that will be affected are as follows:

RED GATE – This is now the colour of the gate that students leave through to catch their buses. Only students catching buses will exit this gate. (This gate was formally the PURPLE GATE)

ORANGE GATE – This gate is located on Auburn Street and will be the gate that students previously using the PURPLE GATE will now exit from – students who were parent pick up students will exit from this gate from term 3.

Student Reports

All student reports were sent home with students on Wednesday.

Term 3

In Term 3 we will be introducing the "GOT IT" Program for Kindergarten to Year 2. This program is supported by NSW Health & Department of Education. Below is a a little bit of information on how the program works.

3/4L News

Last week, we witnessed the building of two platforms for our new Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag poles. We saw a cement mixer deliver cement to fill two newly dug holes.  We found out the mixer holds 12 500kg of cement (some clever kids worked out this mass is 12.5 tonnes) and it's operated by a hand held remote control.

At the Bourke Street Remembrance  line of trees, we busily weeded and mulched the natives. Charlie found two huge white and brown witchetty grubs in the rotting mulch pile and Gus carefully buried them at a safe distance from our busy feet.

We are enjoying our Read to Self time during our afternoon Crunch and Sip break. It is great to see so many boys and girls lost in the world of stories and facts.

K/1R News

We have been working hard in Literacy and Numeracy over the past few weeks. Our focus in Literacy has been on our synthetic phonics program and writing. The students have written some very interesting narratives about the lands at the top of the faraway tree, which has been our class text. The students are enjoying the numeracy rotations and are very excited to learn new Numeracy games which help to consolidate their learning.

5/6B News

This term, 5/6B have been very involved in art projects. One of our favourites is our Hot Chocolate Art which students created in celebration of welcoming winter. Students first sketched their cups and designs and then coloured in their cups and backgrounds with their choice of pastels, pencils or texta's. The class was then surprised with some real hot chocolate to have and enjoy while they completed their artwork! We had a lot of fun creating these colourful cups.
