Henley Beach Primary School Newsletter

Term 4 week 8 - Wednesday 7 December

From the Principal - Stephen Jolley

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend last night’s school concert. It was fantastic to see so many families come along to watch the class performances. Each class had been practising their item for several weeks and our students enjoyed the opportunity to perform to the school community. I would also like to acknowledge the performances of our school’s instrumental students, choir and dance troupe. Much time and preparation is required to put together these events; thank you to our Performing Arts teacher, Elena Sourbis, and all staff for their help and support. Well done to all of our students, you did a great job!

Thanks also to the canteen staff and volunteers for providing catering on the night.

As this will be our last main newsletter for the term, please be aware of the following information:

Covid-19 Arrangements

We are hopeful that our school year will not be bookended by Covid-19 but unfortunately we have seen an increase in staff and students returning a positive result in the past few weeks. Earlier this week correspondence was sent to one of our classes recommending that children in the class undertake a RAT test due to the number of confirmed cases in their class. When these situations arise, information will be sent directly to families via Seesaw if your child’s class is affected. Please be aware that if a student returns a positive result then they are required to be not attend school for 5 days.

2023 Class Arrangements

Next Monday all students will have the opportunity to visit their new class and meet their teacher for next year. Students will be provided a letter to take home which will indicate their placement.  As mentioned previously, every effort has been made to ensure each class has a balanced profile (gender, academic achievement, friendships). We acknowledge that children will respond differently to this change and we ask that you support your child through this experience and frame it in a positive way.

End of Year Reports

Your child’s end of year report, which details their achievement against the Australian Curriculum will be made available (online) next Thursday, December 15th. Please contact the school if you do not have the login information to access the online portal. If you have any queries about the information provided in your child’s report, please contact their class teacher.

Governing Council

Next year we will be looking for new members to join the school’s Governing Council. Governing Council have a very important role in representing the parent community to help inform and monitor the directions of the school. The group meets twice every term (after hours, normally from 6.30pm). If you are interested in joining the Governing Council please consider nominating in the new school year.

End of term dismissal

A reminder that the last day of term is Friday 16 December and students will be dismissed at 2pm. A whole school assembly will be held at approximately 1.10pm, please be aware that only parents/carers of children who are being presented with an award will be permitted to attend as an audience member (the school will notify you in the coming week if your child will either be getting an award or be acknowledged for receiving a Year 6 graduation award).

 School Sport

We have had a successful 2022 for Out of Hours School Sports, with excellent participation in school basketball, soccer, football and Auskick, and netball. We really thank our parent/carer volunteer coaches, managers and coordinators for the time they have given to enable our students to play; Out of Hours School Sports would not be possible without them.

In preparing for 2023, each sport requires a co-ordinator to support the coaches and work with the sporting associations. Materials and Services

We wish to advise families of the outcome for the 2023 Materials and Services poll in regards to Governing Council’s recommendation that the core M&S charge be $380.00 for Reception to Year 6, known as the “prescribed sum”.

The result was as follows:

102 “yes” votes in favour of the Materials and Services Charge of $380.00 becoming legally recoverable in the event of non-payment, with 39 “no” votes against. Therefore, the Materials and Services Charge will be set at $380.00 for 2023.

Sports Report - Renee Hanna PE teacher

It has been a busy semester for sport at our school. We have had lots of school sport opportunities, Knock Out Sport and clinics on offer to students.

Basketball

On Friday 12 August, Henley Beach Primary School had a boys and girls team enter the SAPSASA Knockout Basketball Competition held at St Clair Recreation Centre. Below are two recounts from two of our star players, Annika L and Cole F:

Year 5/6 Girls SAPSASA Basketball by Annika L

On our SAPSASA day we versed 4 different teams but unfortunately only won one of our games. It was still a really fun day to play all these teams and improve throughout the day! We played Allenby Gardens, Grange, Whitefriars and Woodville Gardens. I got to see lots of familiar faces from when I used to play club basketball which was very fun. Our team consisted of 8 players, 4 year 5s and 4 year 6s. Our team consisted of Luciana who was getting boards and very aggressive whilst driving to the hoop, Annika was shooting some great shots and was doing lots of great passing, Steph was ‘breaking ankles’ and ‘swatting shots’, Larah was shooting ‘lights out’ and getting lots of buckets, Penelope was very aggressive during offence and defence and always looked for the best pass, Delia and Jordyn were all doing great passing and ball skills to always find the best pass and find the open players and Matilda did a fantastic job of joining our team late, but fitting right in.

The day was so much fun and the dino nuggets from the canteen were so yumm! We came out with the victory when playing Allenby Gardens which was very exciting. The day was absolutely incredible and it was so fun to see everyone improving through training.

Year 5/6 Boys SAPSASA Basketball by Cole F

At the SAPSASA Knockout Basketball Tournament, the boys team from Henley Beach Primary School played Kidman Park Primary, Whitefriars Primary and Woodville Gardens Primary in the first round. Our team had 9 players consisting of Max who was a beast on the defensive end, Cole who was dishing out assists, Luca was calm every play and helped us get points, Hyde was being very aggressive on both ends and handled the ball well, Aston was breaking ankles and driving hard to the hoop, Ethan was all round every game, Kobe’s post game on both ends was amazing, Jayden just couldn’t miss and Lucas was lights out from range. Our team won all 3 first round games then we made it to the second round but unfortunately lost and was knocked out. It was great fun training and playing with close friends from school.

I would like to thank all the players for their fantastic efforts, both during every training session and in every game. They should be proud of their efforts and what they achieved. A big shout out to the parents who helped with transport and scoring, it always makes the day so much easier, as well as the parents who were there to cheers us on every game. Last but not least, thank you to Mr Wuttke and Sharyn for stepping into the coaching role for the tournament.

Athletics

We took a large team to District Athletics and had many fantastic results. Students were involved in 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, relays, shot put, discus, long jump and high jump. A number of the students who competed are children who do Little Athletics, but many are new to Athletics and had their first competition that day. We had 8 students selected for the Airport team to compete at the State Championships- Isabella A, Chloe M, Olivia L, Riley F, Nahla S, Grace S, Jordy N and Athan L. Congratulations to all these students on their selection and on great performances on the day of competition.

Hockey

We had the exciting opportunity recently to be able to access a 1 day Hockey clinic at Adelaide Uni Hockey Club at West Beach. We had over 50 students attend and play on the turf grounds. We had clinics in the morning then played games in the afternoon. It was a great experience for our hockey players to play with school friends and for our non-hockey players to be introduced to the game. We thank Adelaide Uni Hockey Club, Todd Kitto and Henley High Hockey Academy Students for this experience.

Tag Rugby

We have also had the opportunity for an in-school tag competition. We had approximately 80 students who made up 10 teams participate for a day long carnival. Again, this is a sport some have played but it is new to many so it was a fun day and a great learning opportunity for all. From this competition we were invited to the Tag State Championships. We thank the NRL for this unique opportunity.

SA Sport Tennis

Nahla S and Aston J were selected in the Airport Team for the SAPSASA Tennis State Championships. They played a number of games across the 3 days with some really good results. Congratulations to the Airport team for placing 2nd in Division 1.

Statewide Schools Softball

Statewide Schools Softball (or what was Knock Out Softball) was played recently as a 1 day carnival. We entered 1 boys team into this carnival, which is the first time in quite a few years that we have played KO Softball. Our team played well on the day, learnt a lot about Softball and really enjoyed the day. Our team came overall 6th, which was a good result from a very close game determining final placings. The boys involved were Riley F, Taj B, Matty Y, Isaak L, Ethan H, Hyde R, Harry F, Athan L, Connor P, Lucas P, Aston J, and Cole F. Well done team.

Tag State Championships

Our school entered 2 teams into the Tag Rugby Carnival in Week 7. We had fantastic results. The boys team won their way through to the Grand Final with some well-played games against highly skilled schools. They ended the day 2nd overall after a close grand final and should be really proud of their result. The girls team placed first overall on the day making them Tag State Champions. They went through their pool matches undefeated playing really well as a team and stepping up the level and intensity of their play each game. They won the Grand Final 3-0. Well done both teams.

Nationals

We have had our three state representatives travel recently for the School Sport SA National Championships, all had a great time, learnt new skills, tested their game against new levels of competition and made new friends. Well done Nahla (Tennis) Olivia (Hockey) and Molly (Soccer).

Private Music Lessons 2022

THE MAGIC STRING GUITAR SCHOOL - Rob Gentilcore

Hi Everyone, My name is Rob Gentilcore, and I'm super excited about offering guitar lessons at Henley Beach Primary School in 2023. I have been teaching guitar in Adelaide schools for the past 27 years, but this is my first time at Henley Beach Primary. Besides being a guitar teacher, I am also a performing musician, a songwriter and am currently in an original band, with whom I have released three music videos. My whole life has been involved in music, with extensive touring in my earlier years. I have created a method of teaching guitar which uses numbers, rather than musical notes, which is far easier for children to learn and understand. Many years ago I taught the traditional note reading method and I quickly realised that kids would get frustrated and anxious about how long it was taking to play a song, which would result in them wanting to stop their lessons. By combining “ear training” and the number method, I have seen children become so much more excited about learning new songs, where they see themselves making good progress, which in turn leads them to be more motivated and enthusiastic…its been a great success! Once children become more advanced, they can try note reading if they wish, but my role in their early development of guitar playing, is to instil a love of music and a love for the instrument. To me, this is the most important duty of being a guitar teacher. The way I “stretch” the playing ability of a student, is by presenting ever more challenging songs, which continue to improve their playing skills and technique Its a fun and creative way to learn guitar…we learn from classic songs, to cartoon and movie themes, to popular songs on the radio today. Its good for children to experience a diverse number of musical styles, thus helping them to be versatile little guitar players! All lessons are conducted on a one on one basis, which produces quicker and better results than group tuition. Learning a musical instrument improves the functioning of the whole brain, helps to build confidence, helps children to have a little less time on their devices (don’t tell them that) helps to take on challenges in a fun way and to teach them how to perform, which is something I'm very passionate about preparing children for performances and concerts is a great way to help them to focus and learn the “Art of Performing”…overcoming "performance nerves”…which helps with many aspects of their everyday lives! Personally, I love the idea of children sharing their musical talents with their families, friends and the world…after all, that's what its all about, sharing music and having fun while you do it! If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything about the guitar lessons, please call or SMS me directly on 0468 915 440 Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy Strumming

The Henley Beach Giving Tree - St Vincent de Paul charity

This year we are proudly supporting St Vinnies by collecting a gift for children who would otherwise not have a present to unwrap on Christmas day. We are also collecting tins, jars, supermarket vouchers or gift cards to put towards a Christmas hamper. These collections will be donated to St Vincent de Paul for less fortunate families this Christmas.

Please do not wrap the gift, just put a tag on the item to identify gender and age.

Tags can be found on the tree in the front office from Monday 14 November and the gift is to be placed in the box next to the tree.

Hamper items can also be placed in the box in the front office.

Collection closes Tuesday 13 December.

Parents and Community Committee - Rosemary Kourtidis

P&C Committee - Announcement of a brand new AV AUTOMATED SCREEN to be installed in our school gymnasium ready for use in 2023.

Over the past 2 years the P&C Committee has raised money to put towards items that would benefit all students and the school.  After careful consideration and consultation with governing council and school executive committee we have chosen to spend some of our fundraising profits on the installation of a new AV automated screen that will be located in the gymnasium.

The new screen will be used for school assemblies, information sessions, open days, movie nights and other school events.

Total cost of this project is $6K, so well done HBPS.

I would like to sincerely thank this year's P&C committee members for their time and effort in organizing and hosting events which helped raise these funds.

Rebecca Richards | Rachel Henning | Ellie Martin | Ange Gianquitto

The committee also wishes to thank the parent volunteers who assisted us in running these events and to the students and school community who attended and supported our fundraising efforts.

We look forward to a bigger and better 2023 and welcoming new faces.
