Principal's Report

Dear Families and Friends of St Anthony’s School

Welcome to the 2019 School year. I am so privileged to have joined the school and look forward to working with you as Principal to see the best for every member of our community.

The last couple of weeks have brought many great moments of celebration and learning. We have celebrated and survived our first day of school, Yr. 6 Zoo Snooze, Open Year Prayer and Presentation of Welcome Certificates and Senior Jumpers, Safe Internet Day and first P&F meeting for the year. I hope these experiences have helped your child settle back into the school routine. We are looking forward to an amazing year and we look forward to working together in making this a joy-filled year of quality learning for you and your children.

On Monday at our Opening Year Prayer we gathered together with seek God's blessing on our year. We asked God's blessing on our teachers as they guide us in our Learning. We welcomed in Love our new students. We prayed for members of our community that they will always listen and guide. We blessed our students that they will always be joy-filled with laughter and gratitude. We presented our Yr 6 jumpers and badges and look forward to our senior students leading our school this year.

Over the last couple of weeks students have been engaged in a variety of learning experiences that are about helping students settle back into school, providing opportunities for students and teachers to develop connections and discover more about each other. All of these activities are about helping students feel connected, safe and settled. This sense of connection is in fact an indicator of student success in learning.

Over the next week information about your child’s class expectation, routines and term 1 learning will be sent home to provide you with information about the various curriculum areas and topics your child will be exploring this term. We hope this information helps you to engage with your child and their learning.

Apology Anniversary - On Wednesday 13th Feb we will commemorate the anniversary of the Apology for the Stolen Generation delivered by Kevin Rudd in 2008. The Australian Parliament offered an official apology on behalf of the people of Australia to all those Indigenous peoples affected by the forced removal of children from their families – this was called the Stolen Generation. As people of love and justice we seek ways of making peace and living out this apology to all indigenous peoples, their heritage, the culture and their customs.

Ensuring our school is a safe place for all - As the school year commences I want to assure all parents and carers of our absolute commitment to ensuring that St Anthony’s is a safe place for all.

•         Our staff are committed and trained to protect the children and young people in our care.

•         All staff and regular volunteers have current police checks.

•         We teach our children age-appropriate strategies to keep themselves safe through South Australia’s Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum.

•         Staff complete certification and undertake regular updated training in Responding to Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care Settings.

•         We also promote strategies to minimise bullying and help students stay safe online.

Information about the broader protection policies of Catholic Education SA can be found on their website. http://www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/our-schools/safe-environments-for-all The website also includes links to online resources for parents and students on a range of topics including anxiety, depression, bullying and how to support your child.

Keeping Safe - Child Protection Curriculum  - At St Anthony’s  the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum is taught to all children as part of student learning. There are 2 main themes: We all have the right to be safe and We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust. There are 4 key areas: The right to be safe - exploring the concept of safety, reviewing the concept of warning signs, unsafe situations and acceptable risk taking, Relationships - understanding rights and responsibilities, trust and networks, developing personal identity, power in relationships, Recognising and reporting abuse - privacy and names of parts of the body, recognizing abuse, neglect and unsafe secrets, internet, telephone and media safety & Protective strategies - problem solving and keeping safe, review of networks.

Should any parents or family members wish to discuss these matters or would like to find out more about the Child Protection Curriculum or Child Protection practices please do not hesitate to make contact with Robyn Mercer or myself.

Care, Well-being and Protection of Children & Young People – The safety and wellbeing of all at St Anthony’s is a critical part of all our activities, learning experiences, polices and processes. All of us have a considerable part to play in the care, wellbeing and protection of young people and each other. As a school we see the nurturing and support of young people as a vital part of our work. We ask the same of all those associated with our community. All of us have a part to play in keeping children safe through our own interactions and dealings with students and we have an important role to play if we believe a child is in danger of harm or you have concerns about their safety and wellbeing. Our Catholic Education Policy for Care, Wellbeing and Protection of Children and Young People, outlines our vision and the actions and procedures we put in place to ensure the care and welfare of young people is at the heart of all we do. You can access the policy at - http://www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/__files/f/2626/Care_Wellbeing_and_Protection_of_Young_People.pdf

Notification of Abuse and Neglect – We all have a duty to ensure the safety, care and protection of children.  Under the Children’s Protection Act 1993, certain people are obliged by law to notify Families SA via the Child Abuse Report Line if they suspect on reasonable grounds that a child/young person has been or is being, abused and/or neglected. This includes all staff employed at St Anthony’s and all our volunteers.  However we all have duty to ensure we work together for the protection of all children. Reasonable grounds to report suspected abuse and/or neglect may include: when your own observations of a particular child’s behaviour and/or injuries, lead you to suspect a child is being abused or neglected, when a child tells you they have been abused, when your own observations about the behaviour of the child, or their adult caregiver/s, give you cause to suspect that a child is being, or is at risk of being, abused or neglected. The Child Abuse Report Line can be contacted on 131 478 or you can make electronic reports via the website -https://my.families.sa.gov.au/IDMProv/landing.html. School staff, who have undertaken training in this area are available to talk further about this or support you if you wish to make a report.

I am so looking forward to the journey ahead and excited and blessed to be in this amazing community, as we work together - students, staff and families to support each other to "Grow in Faith, Build Knowledge & Work for Justice."

Best wishes from Stuart

Religious Identity and Mission

See the Good News, Be the Good News, Tell the Good News

As a Catholic school, we share in the work of the Christian church to continue the work of Jesus, through our words and actions. This year our theme is  “See the Good News, Be the Good News, Tell the Good News”. The good news Jesus continues to bring to our world is that God’s unconditional love for all people and all of creation is bigger than we can imagine! This love is especially offered to those who our society casts aside. It is this kind of love that will bring the kind of peace to our world that we want for our children.

Our school prayer for 2019 expresses our hope that St Anthony’s School will be a place of ‘Good News’, where all in our community, and beyond, experience God’s love, through our love and care for each other, for creation and especially for those in need.

God of all hearts

Help us to see your Good News –

in each other and in the world around us

Help us to be your Good News –

in the way we treat each other

and the way we care for all creation

Help us to tell your Good News –

with our words and with our actions.

Guide us with your love and wisdom

so that we can be

thriving people, capable learners

and leaders for the world you desire.

We ask this in Jesus’ name

Amen

As your children engage in the Religious Education curriculum and the Catholic ethos of St Anthony’s, we are mindful that families come to us from a variety of faith and cultural backgrounds. We assure you that our commitment is to invite children to get to know who Jesus was, what he did and what he asks his followers to do. As with other curriculum areas, the child is at the centre of the learning and in Religious Education they will be invited to wonder and inquire about the big mysteries of life! The Christian Scriptures inspire us as we explore these mysteries together.

“...Children themselves have a perspective on faith and religion.  They are not ‘by nature’ incompetent concerning ‘religion’. Children can also think about religion and they experience it often in their own ways that are not necessarily less ‘good’ than the adult way.  The ‘theology’ developed by children is worth taking seriously and studying as such. Children can be a ‘source of revelation’. They can arouse and deepen spiritual insights”.

Prayer Life at St Anthony’s

As well as daily prayer in classrooms, children will have the opportunity to regularly participate in the prayer life of our Catholic community. Heart Prayer (stillness and silence ) will soon become a regular feature of daily life at St Anthony’s. During class prayer times, community prayer gatherings and parish Masses - some children will actively participate, others will curiously observe and will be learning as they observe – while no one can be ‘made’ to pray – all children are expected to be present and to be respectful of these important moments in our Catholic school. Our school calendar will regularly inform you of these times – parents and caregivers are always welcome to join us at these important moments in the life of our Church family.

Keep in Touch!

If you ever want to talk about any issues related to faith or the religious dimension of our school, both Stuart and I would love to have some conversations. Pope Francis is encouraging all Christian communities to be places of dialogue – where we learn from each other and are open to the perspectives of others.

This year my usual work days this year will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays..

I look forward to working with you as we help our children and each other to really be the ‘Good News’ in 2019.

Catholic Education - Together Day

On Wednesday 23rd Jan,  6000 staff from all Catholic Schools in South Australia gathered together for a day of prayer, reflection and celebration. The Director of Catholic Education launched the Living, Learning, Leading Framework which articulates the experiences of learning and formation every student in a Catholic School will receive. The video below shares some of the key elements of this framework and we look forward to using it to guide the learning experiences of students at St Anthony's.

We heard from Fr Phillip Marshall about the foundations of Catholic Education that everyone matters. Robyn Moore challenged us to move beyond informed to TRANSFORMED”… so that we can Re-ENGAGE, Re-CREATE, Re-FRESH and RE-IGNITE the passion, experience and appreciation for the privileged work we do with and for children and young people in all Catholic Schools.

Safe Internet Day & ICT Acceptable Use Agreement

Safer Internet Day (SID) was held on Tuesday 5 February and helps encourage a better internet, with this year's theme—'Together for a better internet' encouraging individuals to create a better internet by developing four, critical skills. We call these skills the 4Rs: Respect, Responsibility, Reasoning and Resilience.

The Pontifical Council for Social Communications (2002) has acknowledged the powerful contribution that the Internet  can make to the development of human life and culture. The world wide web, e-mail and other technologies are transforming the world. The internet can foster prosperity and understanding among peoples and nations. The responsible use of freedom and democracy can be expanded by the emerging information and communication technologies. The internet is broadening educational and cultural horizons, breaking down divisions and promoting human development in a multitude of ways.

Catholic schools in South Australia are called to enter into  partnership with parents, in union with Christ’s saving mission, to educate young people for active participation in the communities of Church and world (SACCS, 1991).  We are called to nurture and support our young people to be thriving people, capable learners and leaders for the world God desires.

The appropriate and safe use of (ICT) Information & Communication Technologies such as laptops, iPads, computers, digital cameras, the internet, computer software, email etc are based on our Catholic Values. To assist us to enhance learning through the safe and appropriate use of ICTs, we ask you to read the  Acceptable Use & Cyber-safety Agreement Form. A copy has been sent home with each child on Tuesday and we ask that you go through this with your child and sign and return the document.

As a school we take seriously the opportunities and privilege  we have to develop the knowledge, skills, capabilities and values of our students and community in relation to their use of ICT.

It is not technology which determines whether communication is authentic, but rather the human heart and our capacity to use wisely the means at our disposal. (Pope Francis 24th Jan 2016)

Children's University

St Anthony’s School is officially a part of the Children’s University. The Children’s University  honours experiences for children outside of the classroom and school and recognises their achievements through the award of formal certificates and graduations. All experiences have a strong emphasis on acknowledging the value of the range of different learning experiences and environments in which children engage. More information can be located at - http://childrensuniversity.com.au/.

A letter was emailed and is available at the Front Office  inviting students who are in Yr 2 and above to enrol in Children’s University. We ask that you complete the return slip below and make payment of the annual registration fee.

Once we have finalised numbers we will proceed with ordering and presenting passports for learning to all members and exploring opportunities and experiences and look forward to their graduation at the Adelaide University later in the year (and yes even with gown and cap!)

Board Update

On behalf of the Board we extend a warm welcome to our school community for 2019, especially to all of our new children and families in Reception and across other year levels. We hope your children have settled in well and have started making new friends.

We warmly invite all families to attend our Annual Community Meeting next Tuesday 12th February commencing at 7.00pm. Creche’ facilities will be available so please let the Front Office staff know if you require this service. This year, we are changing the format of the meeting to a more interactive session so we welcome your attendance to hear your feedback, hopes, fears and questions you may have about our school, the vision and the plans for 2019 and beyond. This is also a great opportunity to meet Stuart. We hope to see you there….nibbles and drinks will be provided. We will also be offering a ‘follow up’ session on Wednesday morning, 13th February at 9.00am for anyone who could not attend the Tuesday evening.

We have some capacity for new members to join the school Board this year and we welcome your nominations. Please speak to Stuart or Leeanne Hills if you have an interest in nominating or would like to know more information about the Board and other committees.

We hope to see you all at the Community BBQ tonight – even if you have not RSVP’d and have a last minute change of heart, please feel welcome to join – there is plenty of food for everyone! BYO drinks, chairs and picnic rugs.

On behalf of the Board we look forward to working more closely with you during 2019.
