A reminder that our PBL Rewards Day is being held on Friday this week. Congratulations to all our safe respectful learners for their positive behaviour this term.
With the school holidays approaching, daily routines will soon change. So to help keep our children safe, families are reminded about these key road safety points:
If your child is aged 8 years or younger, hold their hand when walking near or across roads. If your child is 9-10 years old always actively supervise them.
It makes sense to wear a helmet when riding scooters and skateboards too!
Everyone in the car must be securely buckled up in the right seatbelt or child restraint.
Reinforce safe road behaviours by being a good role model! Children learn safe road behaviours from the adults who care for them. Talk about what you are doing to be safe when near roads, in the car and when riding.
The best way to keep your child safe is to actively supervise them. Talk and teach your child about road safety every time you are out an about. Remind other adults who care for your children to do this too.

On a scale of one to ten, how much are you looking forward to the upcoming school holidays? Is there a countdown? Are your plans made or are you playing it by ear? ‘Staycation’ or ‘vacation’? Will you be having time with your family? Or perhaps a holiday with friends?
Whatever your plans, I’d love to challenge you to ensure there is time for REST. Rest is one of those vital aspects of life that often is pushed to the side during busy school terms with sporting seasons, after-school commitments, homework and the like. When it’s holiday time, it can be really easy to trade one form of busyness for another (albeit more recreational) form of busyness. We’ve all said, “I need a holiday to recover from my holiday!”
As a culture generally, we value busyness and productivity. Many try and fit as many things into their days and weeks as possible. Certainly, with families, that spills over between family members' varying interests and occupations and everyone can feel the impact of it. Even during the holidays, we try to pack in as much as we can.
I wonder what comes to mind when you hear the word “rest.”
To me, rest is the intentional slowing down of activity to allow time to recover and refuel. Many religions incorporate and value a specific day of rest. There are also many cultures that embody the idea of daily rest in the form of a siesta or the like. A pause in the day or week. Rest takes many forms - physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental.
What helps you to find true rest in each of those areas?
One key to considering rest is looking at the outcome of it. When I have finished doing “x”, am I more rested? Do I feel better able to handle what my days throw at me? Do I have more energy and feel more settled?
When we scrutinise our restful activities, where do they leave us? The impact on children can be really significant. In my experience, children sometimes engage in what I think of as “fake resting.” Fake resting is participating in something which looks like switching off or rest, but doesn’t actually provide the benefits that come with true rest. These are things like playing on screens (especially for too long) and watching too much TV or too many movies. They look like “rest” because of a lack of physical activity, but they produce behaviour and development that is counterproductive to rest - tension, irritation, lower cognitive engagement and in extreme cases the thinning of the brain’s cortex where our critical thinking and reasoning occur (1). With such easy access to these things, many times our children have not learned how to rest in a restorative way.
Please don’t get the message that there is not a time and place for screens, TV and movies in our lives, but rather that we and our children benefit from limits and from learning how to rest in other ways - whether it’s mindfulness, a nap, a coffee with a friend, a slow walk or just a slow day at home playing with toys, games and each other. Rest is vital to our wellbeing. It helps to moderate stress in our lives and keeps us functioning well physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
What will you do to get some rest these holidays? What new thing can you try that promotes rest for your family? See you next term!
Essential Canteen Price Rise
Due to continuing cost pressures there will be price rises across the canteen menu from the start of Term 4. The decision to raise prices was not taken lightly and increases have been kept to a minimum. The P&C appreciates your understanding on this matter.
Attention Year 6 Families
Each year 6 student is being asked to participate in a fundraising project for the year 6 formal to ensure we can keep lower ticket prices for all. All year 6 students have been issued with a unique barcode that can be scanned when depositing used cans and bottles at any Return and Earn collection point. If you haven't received a barcode or your family would like more than one, please send a private message to the Wamberal P&C Facebook page and we will make sure you get one asap. Please get involved! Rope in neighbours, family and friends to help get the dollars coming in for this fundraiser. We appreciate any and all help. Every can or bottle will help. If any other members of the school community would like to assist with fundraising with your own barcode, please message us at facebook.com/wamberalpandc
