FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Being the best version of ourselves that we can be…

As we inch toward the end of term, everyone is feeling the impact of the challenges these past 10 weeks have brought. It has been long and relentless for all. There have been so many positives in all domains of our community, yet amongst these, there have been times when we have not shown the best version of ourselves in our interactions. Reminders have been needed around respect and care for others, in ours and the wider community, how we behave in the Canteen queue, on the bus and toward our opponents whether we win or lose, in the classroom and as we interact with our peers.

The article below, Civil Society, speaks of the workplace, yet is equally valid for us all, as parents, staff or students. I commend these sentiments to you in the hope that civility and kindness are even more evident in the Pittwater House family, in the days and weeks ahead. In the advice shared here, “thanking people, sharing credit, listening attentively, humbly asking questions, acknowledging others and smiling all have an impact…” are amongst my favourite ways of operating each day. I hope you agree.

Pittwater House HSIE Faculty

In our series Introducing our Staff, I am delighted to share ‘2 truths and a lie’, from the HSIE Faculty. Along with several of our departments this year, the HSIE Faculty has grown to accommodate our growing enrolment. With one term almost behind us, the strength our three new historians have brought, is evident to all. They have joined a well-established and highly regarded staff room and I thank each member of the group for their novel way of introduction.

K-2 Swimming Carnival

A beautiful morning enabled our Junior Primary children to experience their swimming carnival last week. And supporting the children throughout were the wonderful Year 6 leaders. We are so fortunate to have student leaders who care so much for the younger members of our community. It was a very happy morning where, as is appropriate, the children learn the importance of team in their House groupings and doing their best in support of their peers.

Year 10 PDHPE - Galmatics Car Maintenance Incursion

In Weeks 7/8, Year 10 PDHPE students attended an incursion involving car maintenance. Forming part of their Road Safety unit, the students participated in some hands on activities changing the wheels of cars, checking the oil and tyre pressure, and learning about the set-up of a car prior to it being driven.

Special thanks to Eleni Mitakos for running the events; we look forward to doing it again in the future!

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

From the Head of Junior Schools

Two extraordinary days were dedicated to developing and strengthening the significance of inclusion and friendship within the Junior School at the end of Week 8.  Heartfelt thanks and congratulations are extended to Mrs Garrad and the K to 2 students and teachers for focusing on acceptance for all in their Harmony Day celebrations and to Mrs Holgersson and the Year 6 students who so competently led House activities on Friday 22 promoting the Friendology, UR Strong initiative. These messages resonate strongly throughout the School. Please see these articles from Mrs Holgersson following my reports.

Last week the focus was on the pool with the K-2 Swimming Carnival, so ably organised by Mr McGregor, supported by Mrs Grigg, Mr Browning and the Junior School staff. The students from Kindergarten to Year 2 demonstrated the importance of waiting until Week 9 for the carnival as they were so much more fit and able to swim in the variety of events so enthusiastically. Nearly every Kindergarten student swam the 25m distance. The Year 6 students supported the staff and K-2 students admirably and most ably, ensuring the little ones who needed reassurance were supported safely, demonstrating our buddy program at its finest.

I do hope you manage to attend the ECC to Year 2 Easter Concert in the great hall next Wednesday 10 April. Please see the calendar and class notes for the particulars of this event.

From ‘Garden to Gourmet’ highlights the effort of the Junior School Gardening Club in tending their flourishing vegetable patch, harvesting the produce and delivering it to the canteen kitchen for use. The students who meet every Thursday at lunch time with Mrs Emma Goss and Mr Paul Smith, were able to supply the canteen chefs with the freshest produce as ingredients for their red Thai chicken curry.

At the beginning of the year a Skoolbag notification was sent to all parents enabling the nomination of their child to bring a mobile phone to school to use in an emergency.  Sadly, many children are not using their phones in this manner, some instigating calls at the end of the day just to check in with parents. This action was not the purpose for which the phone permission was granted. Any change in collection procedures must come through the School office to the teachers concerned.

A further liberty taken from the phone privilege has been by students travelling home by bus. Students are not to use their phones or their devices to play games, search the internet, do homework, or provide hotspots. All devices need to remain safe in students’ bags while travelling. All students have been reminded of this regulation.

Student Success

Please join me in congratulating Sonia, (J3) and her Manly Warringah U10 female softball rep team for winning the NSW State Championships held over the weekend at Camden. After winning all games at the Campbelltown Ghost and Georges River Rats Tournaments earlier this month, the girls won the Grand Final over Cumberland Nepean after a dominant undefeated weekend. Many thanks to their amazing and super dedicated Assistant Coach, Shontelle, (C8).

Sebastian, (P2), participated in the Warringah Amateur Swimming Association carnival last Saturday, representing his swimming club. Sebastian won a bronze medal for 25 m freestyle in a PB.

He gained a silver medal for 25m backstroke in his age, also a PB. It was Sebastian’s first swim meet outside of his School. Sebastian was selected to participate in the mixed 8 years and under freestyle relay for his club and his team took a second place. Congratulations to Sebastian for this effort.

House Buddies – UR STRONG Day

We kicked off House Buddies in the Junior School with some activities based on the URSTRONG Friendship Program that we are doing in the Junior School Classrooms. The entire Junior School was divided into House teams of about 10 students, with two Year 6 students taking the lead of each of these groups. Together, we came up with group handshakes, we played games, we had some fun and we got to know each other a little bit better. Thank you to the Year 6 students for all of their preparation for this day, and for making the time that they had with their teams so much fun. We look forward to doing more of this next term.

Years 3-6 Inter-House Sport Competition

This term, Years 3-6 have been engaged in a ‘Battle of the Houses’ during our weekly sport sessions. The competition has been fierce, with the leader board changing every week, and the skills being practiced, going from strength to strength. We have focused on ‘throwing and catching’, ‘ball skills’, ‘fitness’ and ‘coordination’, and we have competed as individuals and as teams. It has been a busy term, but a fun term of competition, teamwork and sport. Our school holidays will be much deserved!

'Harry Potter' Day

Last Friday as a culmination to Pittwater House’s Writers in Residence, staff were invited to dress up in 'Harry Potter' themed costumes.  Below are selection of pictures.

'Teen Brain' by David Gillespie

From Australia's most trusted non-fiction researcher and author comes the book that every parent needs to read. We have David Gillespie’s new book, “Teen Brain”, which parents and carers are welcome to borrow!

This book examines the link between depression and addictive behaviours and electronic devices. Unlike drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, electronic devices are not illicit. Quite the contrary. They are liberally distributed by parents, with few restrictions placed on their use.

However, all is not lost. In Teen Brain, David sets out clear, reasonable and effective rules to help you confidently manage your children's use of screens at this critical point in their lives.

Children's Book Council of Australia

The Children’s Book Council of Australia recently released their Short List for 2019! The winners will be announced during Book Week (17 - 23 August). All of these are available to be borrowed from the library. Below are some of our favourites!

Borrowing over the Autumn Break

Please remember that junior students cannot borrow books over the holidays, all books must be returned to us before Autumn Recess, non-refundable charges apply for outstanding resources.

Senior School students can borrow over the holidays if their current books are not overdue. Please note that we have beautiful new books available to borrow over the holidays.

Mothers' Day Gift Bazaar

Dear Parents,

The PHPA,  together with a wonderful team of volunteers, will be holding a Mothers’ Day Gift Bazaar for the Junior School.

Our Junior school students are invited to purchase a Mothers' Day inspired gift for their Mum, Grandma, Auntie or special friend.  Each gift has been carefully chosen and costs $15.

If your little one would like to purchase a gift or 2, we encourage you to pre-purchase a voucher(s) via this link www.trybooking.com/BBOQL

We will deliver the voucher to the respective class teacher.  Alternatively, your child may also bring cash on the day.

There will be a poster with the selection of gifts displayed in each classroom, so the students can preview which one they would like to purchase.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Petrina and Cameille (our gift elves) at PHPA@tphs.nsw.edu.au

Warm regards,
