Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 1 Newsletter - Friday 14 October 2022

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Welcome

I would like to welcome everyone back to a new term of learning for students and enjoyment of the special events planned for Term 4. We want every student ‘to be known, valued and cared for’ and to ensure that every student finds DPS a great place to come to everyday through the richness of the educational programs being provided!

Social Media Reminder

This is a reminder around the rules of social media as we have noticed that a large number of students have programs such as Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat.

Please know that the age limit for these programs is 13 plus and no primary student should have these accounts. We are asking parents to support our school in continuing to monitor what students are accessing online. If students are using these programs inappropriately and issues come into the school due to this, the school will investigate and take appropriate action. Cyberbullying and abuse sent electronically is grounds for suspension of a student.

Thank you for your support in keeping our school and students safe in this changing 21st Century world.

Additional School Development Day

An additional School Development Day has been allocated for public schools for the end of the year to support preparation for the new curriculum in 2023.

Students will now finish school on Friday 16 December 2022.

With this change, we ask that you arrange alternative care for your child on Monday 19 December.

October P&C Meeting

The October P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday, 25 October - a week later than normal due to the Australis concert at the Sydney Opera House on the 18th.

Tell Them From Me Parent Feedback Survey

Final chance to give us feedback!

If you have not had the chance to complete the Partners in Learning parent survey on student engagement, please do it today.

An incorrect link was included in the newsletter at the end of Term 3. The correct link is included below.

To access the parent survey for Drummoyne Public School please go to:

Unexplained Absence notes

Notes for unexplained absences are automatically generated electronically and sent home with students who were marked absent with no explanation. If your child was absent for several days and you called to explain one of the days, you will still receive a note for the unexplained days.

Please fill in the reason for the absence and sign below before returning it to the office.

All student absences are required to be explained. Please do this by:

  • calling the school office on 9181 2636
  • sending an email to Drummoyne-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au
  • entering a submission on the Skoolbag App
  • Bringing in a written note when your child returns to school. All absences over 3 days require a doctor’s certificate.

Thank you for your help.

Class of the Week - 6M

Class 6M have been focusing on informative texts with students combining two animals to invent a hybrid animal. They then wrote an informative text to match the characteristics of the two combinations. The texts certainly make for some interesting reading!

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID-smart measures continuing in Term 4

As we move into the warmer months, NSW Health has advised that despite the steady decline in COVID-19 cases in the community there is a continued risk of new COVID-19 waves of transmission into summer. The department is continuing with the following baseline COVID-smart measures throughout Term 4:

  • Students, staff and families are to stay home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms. RATs are available through contacting the school.
  • Students, staff and visitors to the school are encouraged to wear masks
  • Wearing of masks on buses and transport to and from camps and excursions is strongly encouraged
  • Staff and students are encouraged to maintain up to date vaccinations, including COVID-19 booster shots for anyone eligible.

Non-COVID school based vaccinations

Due to the ongoing pandemic and stay-at-home orders that were in place over the previous two years, NSW Health have noted that some children and young people have missed out on the non-COVID school-based vaccination programs that they would have taken part in. Parents and carers are reminded to make sure that all of their child’s vaccinations are up-to-date, including other, non-COVID vaccinations.
If unsure about whether their child has missed any vaccinations, parents and carers should speak to their GP or go to NSW Health’s Immunisation requirements in primary and secondary schools.
Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing  symptoms of COVID-19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses that require treatment and management by a doctor.
For more information on vaccinations refer to our Vaccination guidelines for staff or the Australian Government's COVID-19 vaccines.

Chess Lessons

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Drummoyne Public School is held on Tuesdays from 11:15am to 12:15pm, starting on 11 October 2022.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email;

enrol@sydneyacademyofchess.com.au for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170

2023 school travel applications are now open

Applications for student travel in 2023 open from Monday 10 October 2022. Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2023 can apply now.

A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody). Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2023.

For further details please see the attachment below.

    https://drummoyne-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for parents to submit an enrolment application online and at the time that best suits you.

    • Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

    New Online Consent Forms

Consent forms for school activities are sent via SchoolBytes email. Please check your junk/spam folder to ensure you are receiving all school communication. Consent forms are sent from the email address 'noreply@mail.schoolbytes.education' and the sender appears as Drummoyne Public School.

You do not require a login to access SchoolBytes. All consent forms will be emailed to you with a link to provide consent for an activity and make payment (where applicable).

In order for this system to continue to work well, we ask parents to please sign any outstanding forms and if there are any fees due, please click the link to make payment at that time.

If you have not received any notes, please contact the office ASAP so we can check that your email address is up to date in our system.

Lost property – Please label everything!

Please ensure your child’s name is permanently and clearly labelled on belongings such as school hats, jackets, lunch boxes, drink bottles and school bags.

Use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on personalised labels. Also please go through your child’s bag with them regularly and check that labels haven’t faded with washing.
