Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week is School Administrative and Support Staff Recognition Week,  we acknowledge and thank our SAS staff for the incredible work that they do. SAS staff play an important role in the school community. They are often the first people you see when you enter the school and are essential to maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and the community. Our SAS staff work in the front office, in classrooms and the library, with individual students and maintain and care for school grounds and buildings. They are the first ones to tend to students when they are unwell or injured and they ensure the efficient management of school financial and administration functions. I would personally like to acknowledge and thank all our SAS staff for the valuable work they perform on a daily basis and for their contribution to support great teaching and learning outcomes in our school.

Father's Day Breakfast

Thank you to the P&C for hosting this event and a special thank you Eve for all your hard work to bring our community together. Thank you to all the mums and dads who helped behind the scenes. It was a lovely morning and we enjoyed seeing all the significant men in our students lives.

We were so pleased to welcome Mr Alister Henskens, our local member of Parliament. It was a lovely surprise and we were delighted to show him around our school. Well done Cara, who at the last minute was asked to give Mr Henskens a tour of our school.

Planning for 2023

Planning for 2023 has begun.  Please inform the school if you are leaving at the end of this year. This does not include Year 6. Having this information allows us to successfully plan our classes and staffing for 2023.

For the Love of Reading

The enthusiasm for reading continues and are getting closer to our target of 9000 hours. Well done everyone.

KINDERGARTEN AND NEW ENROLMENTS 2023

We welcomed Kindergarten 2023 families this morning to NPS.  Once again I would like to remind parents if you have a Kindergarten student starting school next year to enrol online before the first Kindergarten Orientation morning on November 8.

R U OK Day

R U OK? Day is the national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs.

This week Normanhurst PS will be spending time thinking about ways we build on our friendships through kindness and checking in on each other. The link below is a video the students will be watching this week giving students practical advice to help them support their friends.

Chess Team! Well Done.

Mask wearing is strongly encouraged at school

NSW Health are unwavering in their message that masks are an effective way of minimising the transmission of respiratory viruses and infections, and protecting our community, especially those who are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and flu.

As case numbers within the community continue to rise, this is a reminder that mask wearing is strongly encouraged for students, staff and visitors, particularly indoors, and that now is not the time to become complacent.

Masks continue to be required for workers who support our students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19, whether they be in schools for specific purpose (SSPs), support units or mainstream classrooms.

PBL - Lesson of the Week - Bike Racks/Arriving and Leaving School

This lesson aims at teaching students the behavioural expectations when they arrive at school and leave and also how to use the bike rack area.

Please share the news within the Community...Enrolments are OPEN!

Carnival Book Fair!

To support ‘For the Love of Reading’ initiative we are hosting a Carnival Book Fair in the school library. Students will be able to purchase books from Monday 12th September to Thursday 15th September 2022.

The book fair will be open for students and parents before school from 8:30am – 8:55am (except Wednesday 14 September) and after school until 3:30pm (except Tuesday 13 September). Students will also be able to preview and purchase books from the Book Fair during their library lessons.

The selection of books at our Book Fair will include a wide range of quality books from Australian and overseas authors and illustrators. This is a fund-raising event and every purchase from the Book Fair raises money to buy resources for our school.

To purchase books at the Book Fair, students may

· pay cash on the day of sale (please place cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and class) · pre-pay from home using the secure online Parent Payment Portal www.carnivalfairs.com.au and use the ‘Parent Payments’ link (top right of home page) and make an online payment with a credit card. Your child brings in the receipt and this can be used to make any purchase at the Book Fair.

· pay by cheque made out to Carnival Fairs

· EFTPOS (Mastercard or Visa)

Please note, books cannot be ordered this year. Books must be chosen from the books at school.

Thank you for supporting our school and for nurturing a love of reading.

For the Love of Reading

“I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.” – J.K. Rowling

Normanhurst students have continued to dedicate their time to our whole school focus on reading. It’s wonderful to hear about the good reading habits that are developing. All the hard work is paying off as we creep closer and closer towards our school goal of 9000 hours. So far NPS has read 6753 hours collectively.

Students continue to check the reading thermometer and weekly leaderboard that are displayed outside the office. Hearing the buzz of excitement as classes trade places on the leaderboard is music to our ears.

Our current leaders are:

NSW Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Finals

Last Friday, the Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Finals took place via Zoom. Our Junior Division finalist Oliver H (3S) and Senior Division finalist Eleanor S (5F) competed in their corresponding divisions and did a tremendous job. They should be proud of their efforts and fantastic spelling capabilities!

Book Review - Year 6 - Willow Harris

Book Report - By Alfred Gormly

Animal Farm is an interesting metaphor for the Soviet Union, and the corruption and oppression within. Animal Farm stretches from the Russian Revolution to Operation Barbarossa, and within that time Animal Farm tells of the oppression under Mr Jones, the dirty tactics of Napoleon, and finally the new pig leadership betraying the promises of the revolution.

It all starts when a wise pig named Old Major calls a meeting where he sets the groundwork for Animalism (Socialism), as well as laying out a handful of rules. However most of the rules laid out by Old Major end up being violated by Napoleon and the other pigs throughout the book.

Animal Farm also does a great job at portraying the rivalry between Snowball (Trotsky) and Napoleon (Stalin), with the attempts of Snowball to develop the farm, and educate the animals ultimately being undermined by Napoleon’s propaganda, and secret police.

Animal Farm is definitely an interesting book, and I heavily encourage any older students who are interested in reading to have a read and see if they like it.

Dance!

On Sunday 28 August our wonderful Junior and Senior Dance Groups competed in The Hills Dance Spectacular Eisteddfod held at Pacific Hills Christian School in Dural. This eisteddfod is a highly popular competition that draws a very impressive crowd due to a high number of schools participating. Both Dance Groups performed exceptionally in their competitive sections, competing against many other public, private, and independent schools from all around Sydney.

The Junior Dance Group performed in the Stage 2 section with 14 competitors and were successfully awarded second place for their performance of Let’s Get Loud. The Senior Dance Group performed in a large Stage 3 section with 22 competitors and displayed excellent skills and enthusiasm during their performance of Circle of Life.

We are very proud of our talented dancers at Normanhurst. Both groups represented our school with pride. Thank you to all the fabulous dance parents for your constant support and encouragement.

Well done to all our Dancers!

Congratulations to our Zone Participants!

Well done to our Zone Athletics team who competed at the Zone Carnival held at the Sydney Olympic Park last Wednesday. It was a huge day for the students meeting at the school for a 7:00am bus departure and returning to school at 4:30pm.

Congratulations to Juliet E, Thomas V, Olivia P and Alexander S who have progressed through to the Sydney North Carnival finishing in the top 2 of their events.

A special congratulations to Juliet E and Thomas V who were crowned 'Age Champions' of the Beecroft Zone for their age category.

Look at our Amazing Athletes!

NPS Band @ School Open Day!

NPS Bands were proud to play to our school community at the School Open Day. It was the first time since COVID that we have been able to perform in front of an audience, and we must admit, it was exciting to perform for everyone! We hope you enjoyed it. This was also the first time that both bands had played together.

This Sunday, 11th September, both Training and Concert bands will be performing at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival at UNSW. This is a great opportunity for students to listen to other bands play, and for them to also receive some feedback on their performance from adjudicators. For students performing, please arrive at your allocated time at Leighton Hall, wearing your full winter school uniform.

Peer Support

Last week in Peer Support…

Students discussed skills, how to communicate their feelings and needs to others and skills they use when participating in a variety of activities. Some of the skills mentioned were teamwork, problem solving, communication, planning and empathy. When students understand that they already have many of the skills needed to succeed, they can feel more confident when trying something new. The students were asked to identify events which trigger different feelings and explore ways to seek support.

During the week we encourage you to…

Encourage your child to remember the skills they have used in one activity when trying something new. Also encourage your child to communicate their feelings and needs.

There will be no Peer Support lessons in Weeks 8 and 9 due to excursions and incursions.

Musica Viva Incursion - The Rhythm Works

The Musica Viva ensemble ‘Rhythm Works’ came to our school to perform on Tuesday August 23. It was the first live musical performance we have had visit our school in a few years, so it was such a special experience! Rhythm Works is made up of professional percussion players and composers who showed us how to use percussion and homemade instruments to make stories and sandscapes. We enjoyed pieces about a waterfall, the Opera House, a storm, a cassowary, a road train and a chameleon. Each one used different sounds, instruments and styles to take us on a journey. One student said, ‘The music helped me make pictures in my head.’ Many others really enjoyed the energy of the drumming and Boomwhackers. Some lucky students got to participate onstage playing the rainsticks and creating animal sound effects. It was a wonderful experience for everyone!

Round 5 Debate!

We had our 5th Round Debate on zoom against John Palmer Public School on Wednesday, August 24. We were the affirmative team, which was a much harder side with the topic, ‘That every schoolkid should have to play in a weekend team sport competition.’ Our first speaker was Millie O, our second speaker was April A, our third speaker was Natalie R and our team advisor was Ethan T. The adjudicator praised us on our team line, rebuttals and clear speaking manner, but unfortunately we lost the debate. We have now concluded the debating competition for the year, and it is very clear how much the students have learned about structuring debates, following the correct roles for each speaker and about coming up with models and rebuttals in our arguments. Congratulations to all of our Debating Club members for a great semester of debates!

Junior Netball

We finished the netball season on Friday August 26 with victories for both of our teams! It was finals day, so we were matched against the team closest to us on the ladder. We were evenly matched, and the games were close and full of good energy. The girls’ team had a shortened game, but showed excellent skills and dominated their game against Epping Public. They won 8-4, placing them 9th on the ladder. The boys played against Dural Public in a very close competition - often scoring goal for goal. The final score was 11-9, placing the boys’ team in 7th position on the ladder. What a fantastic ending to the season! All of the students have improved so much in their skills, team work, resilience and understanding of the game! I am so proud of all of them. By Ms Layton

Netball Donation

We are very grateful to the Normanhurst Netball Club for the very generous donation of a Netball kit. We were so excited to receive some new bibs, high quality balls, some whistles, equipment bags and a pump. We know they will get a lot of use within our school! We tried some of it out at our final netball match last Friday.

Father’s Day Breakfast

Huge Thank You’s to all our Wonderful Normo Dads (you know who you are!!) and volunteers who helped out with the Father’s Day Brekky put on last Friday morning! It was such a lovely occasion and great for people to mingle on the grounds again. Despite a few little hiccups (to be expected), we had a great morning and appreciate all the effort Eve and my other committee members put in for a successful event. We were also honoured by a visit from our local minister Mr Alister Henskens who came by to say Hello to our school community and show his support.

An unofficial and informal P&C meeting - Wednesday 7th September from 6pm - BLUE GUM HOTEL

For those of you interested in coming along to a “social” P&C, please join us at the Blue Gum Hotel on THIS Wednesday night, we plan to eat from 6pm and then have a meeting/informal discussion afterwards. If you want to come along and share some ideas, please do so but text Bonita to let us know to expect you, on 0414 505 800. Look forward to seeing you there!

We will elect in the next AGM, these Committee positions:

OFFICEBEARERS (4 positions):

~ P&C President

~ Vice President (x2)

~ Treasurer

~ Secretary

COMMITTEE (4*-6 positions):

~ Band President

Pymble store The Uniform Exchange - Year 6 Parents

Sue from the Uniform Exchanged reached out to us, see her message below!

We are eager to help your year 6 parents by letting them know where they can find good quality, second hand uniforms for many North Shore High schools.

The Uniform Exchange in Pymble was created to help support parents financially and to encourage environmental sustainability.  This is achieved by selling preloved uniforms and text books for people within the school community.   The shop is open 6 days a week throughout the year, and we have over 13,000 quality second hand uniforms and text books in store, which cater to:

Abbotsleigh  -  Brigidine College  -  Barker  -  Knox  -  Loreto Normanhurst  -  NBCS  -  Pymble Ladies College  -  Ravenswood   -  Roseville College  -  St Leos  - The Kings School

The Uniform Exchange is dedicated to sustainability.  Our zero waste policy means we have saved over a quarter of a million uniforms and books from landfill, and benefitted underprivileged children in Africa, PNG, Cambodia, Fiji, Tonga and Vietnam.

Thank you for your help in forwarding our details to your year 6 parents.
