A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Term 3 is well underway and we have had a very busy and productive first few weeks.

Wellbeing Afternoon

This week we held our wellbeing afternoon to share with our community The Resilience Project. It was wonderful to see so many parents and extended family members join with us to interact with TRP and the many classroom activities. Big thank you to Ellie Burford for her leadership and organisation of the TRP afternoon.

Aboriginal Mural

We were very fortunate to have Dan Rankine join us this week to design a mural with students for our wellbeing space. The mural work coincides with the National Week of Action against Bullying and Violence, with the theme, ‘Everyone Belongs.’ Dan worked with students across the school, sharing his art and some cultural stories, delivered with knowledge and good humour to engage the children very positively. You might’ve seen some progress photos of Dan’s work on Facebook this week. We look forward to seeing the finished product and we are very grateful to Dan for his time and energy in bringing this project to life.

New Sports Day Team Names

Dan has also worked with us to rename our sports day teams by translating new team names to Kaurna language. Student leaders brainstormed possible team names and themes, which were then translated . Student leaders then decided the four sports day team names. We are very pleased to announce the following:

Our Blue house is Tarnee. Pronounced TAR-NEE,  this is the Kaurna word for sea/ocean.

Our Red house is Milltea. Pronounced MILL-TEA, this is the Kaurna word for Red Ochre, present in the cliffs and coves throughout Hallett Cove.

Our Yellow house is Tirntu. Pronounced TURN-TOO, this is the Kaurna word for sun which is also featured on the Aboriginal flag.

Our Green house is Wirra. Pronounced WIH-RUH, this is the Kaurna word for bush/forest.

Student leaders have worked really hard to adapt team chants and will work with all students to learn the new team names and chants in preparation for the big day. We are very proud of our new sports day names and thank Dan for supporting us with this new direction.

New Cricket Pitch

You may have noticed that this week we had a new cricket pitch set down on the oval. In coming weeks, the concrete pitch will have a synthetic turf cover. We were very fortunate to receive a grant from South Australian Cricket Association to carry out the works. We thank Sheidow Park Cricket Club for collaborating with the school on this project.

NAPLAN Collection

Just a reminder to year 3 and year 5 families that 2024 NAPLAN results are available for collection from the school’s front office.

Thank you!

Finally, a big thank you to Wendy Fisher for donating her time and some new plants to upgrade one of our garden beds in the drop off zone at the front of the school. Wendy also tidied up some other garden areas near the new landscaped area. True community spirit, thank you Wendy!

With regards

Matthew Chapman

Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS community,

It is hard to believe  we are heading into week 5 next week! What a wonderful first half of the term with already so many wonderful learning opportunities for both students and the school community.

Reading Workshops R-2

Last week, we held two informative parent reading workshops for families of students in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2. We are thrilled with the turnout and want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the families who attended!

The workshops focused on:

  • Insights into the reading process and how children learn to read
  • How we teach reading at Hallett Cove East Primary School
  • Effective strategies to support reading at home

Each family received a resource pack filled with materials and information designed to support your child’s reading development at home.

Your active participation is vital to your child’s literacy journey, and we greatly appreciate your engagement and enthusiasm.

Book Week "Maybe a Miracle" Performance- Week 5

Our Book Week Live performance is coming up for students at HCEPS next week.

Celebrating Children's Book Week® 2024, the educational and interactive musical adventure Maybe A Miracle! is coming to our school! Students will be immersed into a highly interactive, educational musical adventure celebrating the Children’s Book Week® 2024 theme (Reading is Magic!) and incorporating a selection of the CBCA 2024 Shortlisted Books.

Charlie is feeling just a bit overwhelmed. He does his best but sometimes his best doesn’t seem good enough, especially when he compares himself to other kids who seem to make difficult tasks look so easy. And then there are chores, and his little sister to contend with at home. Like any other kid Charlie has dreams – to be a rock star, explore different places, be a scientist that solves the problems of the world – but they seem to get further away every day. To be honest he’d be happy if he could find the space to have just a bit more fun now and then. Charlie wonders that maybe a miracle is what he needs to change things for the better. However when something totally unexpected reveals that there are miracles happening all around him, he needs to figure out what to do with them.

Will some of the books that Charlie recently discovered provide a clue?

Book Week Parade and assembly

Please join us next Thursday for our Book Week parade at 9am, followed by an assembly held in the pavilion.

We are looking forward to all the wonderful learning opportunities and activities planned across the week for Book Week.

Dental Visit

This term we have the Dental Foundation visiting HCEPS in week 8 (9th -13th September). They will be on site all week. If you would like to register and book your child in for a dental checkup please use the QR code provided through Audiri or displayed around the school. Please visit dentalfoundation.org.au for further information.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR WELLBEING LEADER

Hi all,

I want to start by expressing a huge thank you to everyone who attended our TRP Family Wellbeing Day!

I’m so grateful for the interest and investment shown by our families. Wellbeing is crucial for our young people; it’s important that we support them in learning how to build and enhance their wellbeing, cope with stressors, and seek help when needed, rather than simply striving for happiness as the ultimate goal.

We’re excited to share access to The Resilience Project Family Hub: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

This hub is filled with valuable resources and tools that you can use at home to further support your child’s wellbeing. If you were able to attend, we would love to hear your feedback. Please follow the link to a short survey - https://forms.office.com/r/zJ40LWxSPk

Wellbeing Engagement Collection Data

Every year, our Year 4-6 students participate in the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection survey. I’m pleased to share a snapshot of the 2024 data: 93% of our students are engaged in organised activities outside of school, such as sports, scouts, drama, instruments, and languages. This involvement leads to great outcomes for our students.

Connection is key to feeling validated and developing a sense of belonging. Research shows that strong relationships are one of the biggest protective factors against stress. There are small opportunities for connection every day, and the most important thing is that these connections are meaningful and purposeful.

Kind Regards,

Ellie Burford

A message from the Wellbeing Leaders

For National Week of Action: bullying no way, we planned lunchtime activities that students would enjoy. On Monday Daniel Rankine came to our school to do create an art with us, with the message of Everyone Belongs. On Tuesday we made friendship bracelets, Wednesday there was art club (scratch art) and Friday we did mindful colouring. This week has been really awesome doing the activities with the students. It was a great experience to interact with the kids at lunch time activities and see their happy faces.

A few words from the Autism Inclusion Teacher

Due to increased awareness and improvements in specialist’s ability to recognise and diagnose autism, there has been an increase in the number of people being diagnosed autistic. According to Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia), at least 1 in 40 Australian’s are autistic. Because of this, it is important to raise awareness of autism, as this helps people understand what autism is and how it affects individuals. Increased knowledge encourages acceptance and inclusivity in society Please take some time to watch this short video, called 'Amazing Things Happen'. It goes for just over 4 mins and it provides a very clear explanation of what Autism is.
