Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 3: Term 1, Week 5 - Monday, 20 February 2023

From the Principal's desk

This week, we look forward to our Parent/Teacher meetings in the hall on Wednesday, 22 February, from 3:45 – 6:00 p.m. These meetings are being held earlier in the year, allowing parents and teachers to discuss and plan student learning and well-being-related matters and provide targeted teaching to suit each child’s individual needs from the beginning of the year. These meetings are an excellent opportunity to build partnerships between home and school to benefit your child's learning and well-being. If you would like to book a Parent/Teacher meeting, please use the Sentral Parent Portal to complete the booking.

If you are unavailable on this day and time, please get in touch with your child's class teacher to organise a mutually beneficial time.

Last Wednesday evening, I had the opportunity to attend the first Parents and Citizens (P&C) meeting for 2023. The P&C Association’s role is to provide “a forum in which parents can develop their partnership with the school and articulate their aspirations for their children’s education.” These meetings are an excellent opportunity to learn about the school, meet other parents, and help in areas of interest to you and your child.

The P&C Association meets twice a term in Weeks 3 and 8. These meetings are held in the school Library at 7:30 p.m. and can also be accessed via zoom to ensure everyone can attend.

The P&C Association is a school-based organisation consisting of parents, teachers and interested citizens. The P&C Association aims to:

  • Promote the best interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close cooperation;
  • Assist in providing facilities and equipment for the school and promoting recreation and welfare of the students at the school;
  • Encourage parent and community participation in curriculum and other education issues at school, and
  • Assist and cooperate with teaching staff at public functions associated with the school, like barbecues, sports carnivals, cake stalls etc.

If you want to know more or have questions about the P&C Association, please call me at the school.

Our next P&C meeting is on Wednesday, 22 March, at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. I look forward to seeing you there.

Regards

Louise Purss-Semple
Principal

School Swimming Carnival

Last Friday, 10 February, saw the school swimming carnival take place at Lavington Swim Centre. Students, staff and parents enjoyed a lovely day around the pool. Seeing so many students participating in as many races as possible and encouraging their teammates was wonderful to see.

A huge thank you to the many parents who volunteered to help on the day. We could not have run the carnival without you. Thank you also to the staff for their efforts to run the carnival. It takes a whole team to make these days such a success.

Congratulations to Paterson for winning the overall carnival with 187 points. Mackellar came second with 174 points, followed by Lawson in third with 89 points.

Several records were broken at this year’s carnival. An excellent effort!

  • 10yr Boys 50m Freestyle – Cess Lieschke (40.36) broke Jack Pitzen’s 2018 record (44.28).

  • 12yr Boys 50m Freestyle – Ollie Cardile (36.75) broke Lachie Holmes’ 2014 record (37.09).

  • 12yr Boys breaststroke – Ollie Cardile (49.53) broke Ewan Mackinlay’s 20145 record (58.09).

  • 12yr Boys backstroke – Ollie Cardile (52.16) broke Ewan Mackinlay’s 2014 record (56.02).

  • Junior Boys butterfly – Zayne Liddell broke Jack Pitzen’s 2018 record (1.05.03).

NAPLAN - Years 3 and 5 students

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point-in-time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills. Each year students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

From 2023, NAPLAN is moving to Term 1 and will take place from Wednesday, 15 March, to Monday, 27 March. The reason for this change is so that results can be returned to schools earlier in the year, which will support teachers in understanding the learning needs of their students and plan accordingly.

NAPLAN tests are just one part of our school learning assessment program, and questions are primarily based on knowledge, understanding and skills gained from the prior year of schooling.

In preparation for NAPLAN 2023, our school will undertake activities to help students to become familiar with the format and functionality of the online tests. These activities are not an assessment of student ability and will not be marked.

Students and parents can access the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN and the types of questions and tools available. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not required nor recommended.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please get in touch with your child’s teacher.
