Welcome to Week 3
Wow, I can’t believe how quickly we have come to week 3 already.
The teachers and students at Kinglake West are working hard to continue to develop student’s capabilities across the board. It is fantastic to see students engaged in their learning and wanting to come to school.
Sport
Last week our year 5/6’s started their Interschool Sports Competitions. Well done to all our students for representing Kinglake West in many different types of sports. I was especially proud of the students and the feedback they received from different members of staff in regards to their sportsmanship, caring attitude and level of fun and engagement displayed. I am looking forward to watching them perform weekly.
Photos
School Photos were held last week and it was especially nice to see all our students take a little extra care with their appearance and hairstyles. The weather graced us with a magnificent morning for it so I am looking forward to seeing the photos. The Kinglake West staff definitely enjoyed our whole school staff photo and there were lovely hairstyles there as well!
Tours
I am now conducting school tours for 2022 enrolments at Kinglake West Primary. If you are thinking about, have siblings of students at our school of age or know families who are considering our school, please know that I am happy to take you on a tour of the school or discuss this important decision. I like to say that there are two major decisions in your child’s education from a parent perspective and that is your decision on a Primary and Secondary school. Being informed helps you make the right decision and enrolling early helps us to work on whole school planning and management going forward to 2022.
Please contact the office to book a tour when ready.
Gastro
We continue to have cases of gastroenteritis (or gastro) over the last week at school. Please be mindful of the following symptoms-
· nausea
· vomiting
· diarrhoea
· fever
· abdominal pain
· headache and muscle aches
These symptoms may take up to three days to develop and usually last between one or two days and sometimes longer. Please remember to do the following things:
· Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to stop the spread of infection
· Encourage children to keep drinking fluids when sick to prevent dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea
· Clean surfaces, benchtops, bathrooms and toys regularly so the infection does not spread to others in your household.
It is very important to remember that if anyone is sick with vomiting or diarrhoea, everyone should remain at home until their symptoms have stopped for 48 hours, as you all may still spread the infection during this time. This includes siblings and other children going to different schools as well.
Mother's Day
Mother’s Day is just around the corner. It is a day to acknowledge that special female in your life that works hard to support and care within families of all types. In today’s society, there is no one type of ‘mother’ or ‘family’. Please make sure to mark the day as a celebration of the person who does show this role within your family. Most of the time, they work hard to do all the things that go unnoticed and are in our everyday.
Reminder – Mother’s Day Stall – Thursday 6th May, 8.45 to 11.30am (volunteers greatly appreciated).
Education Week is back for 2021, which runs from Sunday 23rd to Saturday 29th May.
This year’s theme of ‘Building Connections’ recognises the importance of schools, families and community groups coming together to support learning. Building connections provides a richer and more diverse learning experience for all students. More information to come in the following weeks in regards to how we will be celebrating Education Week.
The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. The upper year students will be given the opportunity to do this survey over the term. This information will help to give our students a voice and provide feedback that will be used for future planning within the school.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank all those parents who have come to share a kind word with me, say hello and even ask if there was a job they could do around the school when they are presented with some extra time. I truly appreciate your efforts and just wanted to say, they don’t go unnoticed. Thank you!!
Reminder - Reading Information Session
Parents/Carers of students in Years Prep, One and Two are invited to attend a Reading Information Session on Wednesday 5th May, from 2.30 to 3:30pm. The information session will be held in Mrs Portman’s classroom.
The aim of the session is to give parents an insight into how children learn to read and write and will provide parents/carers with strategies that they can use when assisting their children with reading and writing at home.
We would like all parents/carers who are intending to become classroom helpers over the year, to attend as well.
Please contact the office or your child’s teacher if you are intending to attend this session so that we can make arrangements for expected numbers.
