Harmony Week
We celebrate Harmony Day and World Down Syndrome Day at Holbrook Public School and throughout many communities this week.
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. On 21 March, we celebrate inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the land’s traditional custodians to those from many countries worldwide.
The ongoing theme of Harmony Week is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Week is a time of cultural respect for all. By participating in Harmony Week activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it. At Holbrook Public School, we will be engaging in meaningful conversations and trying to learn something new. We will be wearing Orange as the chosen colour to signify communication and meaningful conversations; it relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
World Down Syndrome Day
Also, on 21 March, World Down Syndrome Day is recognised to celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome. This day provides an opportunity for us as a school and community to raise awareness about the rights and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
Students are invited to wear ‘Lots of Socks’ or bright socks. Lots of Socks is a Down Syndrome International campaign to create conversation and awareness each year. The idea behind the Lots of Socks initiative is that all types, shapes, and sizes of the same thing can be unique in their own way and yet do the same thing. Children understand what socks are, how they look, and what they are for, and children understand that no two socks are the same. Lots of Socks is a campaign to create conversations about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion, and acceptance.
Sport
I want to congratulate Will Glass on his selection in the Riverina Tennis team to represent Riverina at the State Championships in Albury next term and also, our mighty Junior swimming relay team, including Cess Lieschke, Harry Purcell, Zayne, and Zye Liddell, who came 2nd at the Riverina carnival and are now off to Sydney in a few weeks to compete at the State Championships.
Have a great week!
