Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 5: Term 1, Week 9 - Monday, 20 March 2023

From the Principal's desk

It has been an action-packed few weeks of carnivals, parent meetings, sporting trials, excursions, incursions, and plenty more.

Harmony Week

We celebrate Harmony Day and World Down Syndrome Day at Holbrook Public School and throughout many communities this week.

Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. On 21 March, we celebrate inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the land’s traditional custodians to those from many countries worldwide.

The ongoing theme of Harmony Week is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Week is a time of cultural respect for all. By participating in Harmony Week activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it. At Holbrook Public School, we will be engaging in meaningful conversations and trying to learn something new. We will be wearing Orange as the chosen colour to signify communication and meaningful conversations; it relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

World Down Syndrome Day

Also, on 21 March, World Down Syndrome Day is recognised to celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome. This day provides an opportunity for us as a school and community to raise awareness about the rights and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

Students are invited to wear ‘Lots of Socks’ or bright socks. Lots of Socks is a Down Syndrome International campaign to create conversation and awareness each year. The idea behind the Lots of Socks initiative is that all types, shapes, and sizes of the same thing can be unique in their own way and yet do the same thing. Children understand what socks are, how they look, and what they are for, and children understand that no two socks are the same. Lots of Socks is a campaign to create conversations about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion, and acceptance.

Sport

I want to congratulate Will Glass on his selection in the Riverina Tennis team to represent Riverina at the State Championships in Albury next term and also, our mighty Junior swimming relay team, including Cess Lieschke, Harry Purcell, Zayne, and Zye Liddell, who came 2nd at the Riverina carnival and are now off to Sydney in a few weeks to compete at the State Championships.

Have a great week!

Louise Purss-Semple

Principal

Riverina Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to the students who competed in the Riverina swimming carnival on Monday, 6 March at Leeton. The team swam their best and had a fantastic day. An enormous congratulations to the Junior Boys relay team (Cess Lieschke, Harry Purcell, Zayne Liddell and Zye Liddell) who came second, and Cess Lieschke who came third in the 10-year boys freestyle. All four boys are off to Sydney to compete in the state swimming championships on 5 and 6 April.

A big thank you to the parents for transporting and supporting the students at the carnival. Our students benefit from having their parents involved in their sport. We wish the four boys all the best as they swim at the State Championships.

Life Education visit

Students had a wonderful time with Healthy Harold and Steph in the Life Education van. Younger students learnt about how to be safe and what to do in an emergency. They all made zero with their fingers to remind them to call 000 for help.

World Down Syndrome Day and Harmony Day

This year, Holbrook Public School will celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and Harmony Day tomorrow, Tuesday, 21 March.

For a gold coin donation, students are invited to wear their favourite, craziest, silliest socks and orange clothes to school. Clothing must include sleeves, sensible, covered shoes and a broad-brimmed hat.

We will run peer support tabloid groups in the afternoon, a 'guess how many socks are in the box' competition for $1 per entry, and we will sell orange juice for $2 per cup. If you don't want your child to drink orange juice, please get in touch with the school before 10:00 a.m. on the day.

Is your child attending a government high school?: If you would like your child to attend a government high school in 2024, you must complete an expression of interest for Year 6 to 7 transition. The expression of interest lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7. After you submit this expression of interest and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a government high school.

Is your child attending a private high school?: You still need to complete an expression of interest, even if your child does not require placement in a government high school next year. Select the Placement Not Required in a Government High School link.

Please complete an EOI using the Online Enrolment System by clicking the link.

Lunch orders

Several students have been exercising their artistic talents on their lunch order bags. As much as we encourage creativity, this confuses the bakery, and some lunch order items are missed. To avoid confusion, please list just the student’s name, class, order and cost on the front of the bag.

Despite reminding students to put their lunch orders in their class baskets each Monday and Friday morning, some students are ‘forgetting’ and expecting a staff member to drive to the bakery to collect them. It is your child’s responsibility to remember to put their lunch order in their class basket. We will endeavour to ring your child’s order through to the Holbrook Bakery if we are notified before 10:30 a.m.; however, once the bakery has delivered lunch at 11:30 a.m., we cannot guarantee that your child will get a bakery lunch.

Our lost property boxes are overflowing! Please have a look through the lost property boxes outside the office. Any unclaimed items will be donated to either the Op Shop or our second-hand uniform shop on the last day of term.

Sessions will run for 1 hour and are available for 5-12 years of age.

We will run for 12 sessions and finish on 4 August with breaks during the school holidays.

The fee is $100 and includes an AFL Auskick pack.

You can claim $100 active kids vouchers from Service NSW to cover your registration costs.

Please ensure you register before turning up for insurance and to help in the timeliness of your AFL pack.

Auskick this year will be run by Daniel Shaw – any enquiries can be directed to Daniel at 0402 289 811.

The more you can engage your child at home to handball, mark, kick and run with an AFL ball before we kick off - the more they will get out of the year.

Holbrook Junior Football Program - Gateway to Under 14

This year, the football club will offer an additional development opportunity for local kids to develop their contested football skills.

For kids in Years 4, 5 and 6, we will run a game between 4:15 and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday nights during the season.

This game intends to develop the game skills needed to take the next step from Auskick to Under 14 football.

All participating kids must be registered through Auskick to play the Thursday night game.

During these games, children displaying good skills and discipline to develop their football may receive an invite to train with the Under 14s and potentially contest for a spot in the team to play on Saturdays.

The plan is to offer 11 games during the year aligning with the Auskick season.

The last game will be Thursday, 27 July – Culminating in the Rand carnival on Sunday, 30 July.

Where: Holbrook Football Ground

When: 4:15 p.m. Thursday nights

Commencing: Thursday, 27 April 2023

For any enquiries, please call Tim Glass on 0419 389 721.
