BOOK WEEK PARADE

On Thursday 25th of August classes came out for the Book Week Parade. Sea Dragon went first then Pelican then Dolphin and Sea Star.  We walked around Sea Dragon and Pelican Units. We went past the Junior Primary Courtyard, and over to the gym. I wore a Port Adelaide Guernsey. Some people were dressed as Minions.  My favourite costume was an inflatable dinosaur. Parents came and saw their children walking in the parade. I liked the Book Week Parade because you could get to walk around the school in your school in your clothes and the parents could watch you.

We ended up at the gym for a Book Week Assembly. The parade went for 3 minutes. After the assembly we went back to class for recess.

LIBRARY AMBASSADOR ROLE

This year I took on a leadership role as a Library Ambassador. It was tricky but exciting as I got to work with other people and keep the library nice and tidy by putting books back to where they belong.

Soon when Book Week was coming, we had a meeting about activities for Book Week. We decided to do treasure hunts for books and craft activities. All Library Ambassadors had to make posters for the treasure hunt and I had to create an example for the craft activity: Walk of the Whales, with paper and a pop stick.

On Monday Book Week was here. Several students came in and did the Book Week treasure hunt and craft activities. I barely had time to put returned books back on the shelves as the library got busy. I had to go back and forth with the craft activity and the treasure hunt to help all students with their activities.

A few days later all Library Ambassadors had to practice the Book Week parade routes for Thursday and get assigned to lead units/classes throughout the parade to make sure it would run smoothly. I got assigned to a year 3 building (Pelican Unit) with Olivia for the parade.

The day of the parade came and a shocking number of parents came to watch the parade. I was waiting for the Sea dragon Unit/classes to pass so I could lead the parade with Olivia. Soon it was our turn and we were off.  We paraded under the verandahs to the gym and everyone sat down for the assembly.

The next thing we had to do was lead classes one by one onto the stage for the assembly. It was loud and lots of people were talking. I felt nervous. Soon I was feeling calmer and returned back to my chair and sat through the rest of the assembly. Then I suddenly got a certificate for being a Library Ambassador. Even the other Library Ambassadors got one.

After the assembly I had to pack up with the other Library Ambassadors. It was tricky as we had to stack lots of chairs and put props from the assembly away before recess was over. It was lucky it was very quick as it was a tough morning and I needed to catch a breath.

In conclusion, being a Library Ambassador is a tough job as we need to do lots of things to keep the library tidy especially during Book Week. Otherwise it’s a fun job as you can be with other people.

A VISIT FROM A BOOK WEEK JUDGE

‘Creak’ goes the door after it has been opened by SD6 walking in to meet the lovely Sarah Forrest. She came to tell us about how she judges books for Book Week.

She is the only South Australian judge right now for the CBCA. There are about 13 other judges, all have different jobs. Someone is the artist and another judge is a teacher and writer they check how good the art is and the writing. She looks at the pictures, title and end pages to judge.

Sarah was really nice and told us a lot of interesting things about what to look for in a picture fiction book. Sarah gets about 35 to 50 books a month and she puts them on the “yes” short list or the ‘no” shortlist or the “maybe” shortlist. Then once a month she goes on a zoom call with 2 other people, there names are Sarah and Margaret and they talk about what they like about each book and whether they go through and maybe win the best book.

She told us about her favourite book and that she likes to read picture books. At the end she told us the CBCA 2022 winner because it was announced and it was “Iceberg” for the children’s picture book of the year.

MYSTERY READERS

From R-6, Mystery Readers have been seen throughout our school. Teachers and SSO’s have read their favourite books to different classes.

Here is some of the students' feedback: “It encourages us to read books even though we are getting older’ said April from SD2. Hudson from SD6 said, “I liked the fact that we got to vote for which books we would read”. Scarlett from SD2 said that “Bea would explain the words if they were hard so we would understand”

Those were only a few of the responses we got from the older kids. The overall response of the younger kids was that it was very funny to have people coming in to read. They especially enjoyed the fart machine to go with the book “Walter the Farting Dog” that Bea read because it was very funny. Overall book week was a fantastic week and the mystery readers were a great touch.

GEOCACHING

On Monday of Book Week, all the year 5 classes did geo-caching!

First we were talking about what geo-caching was, and after talking about it we finally started. We grabbed our GPS and it had its own coordinates. We followed its coordinates and we ended up at a special destination. It had a bag, so we opened it and inside was a secret word and a challenge for us to do. We had to find and complete 15 bags which meant we needed to complete 15 challenges. Our GPS’s had different numbers on them like: 22, 25, 32, etc. We had to choose one with different numbers so we made sure we didn’t grab the same GPS.

Sadly, my group only found and completed 11 challenges which meant only 11 words were found. When we were marking, Cameron and Lauren (the demonstrators) let us write down all the missing words. Cameron and Lauren from Nature Play SA, chose which group we were in. I was in Laurens group with my friends Leila, Ella and Emily.

The secret sentence was: “In 2022, together we can be brave, make change and dream with eyes wide open!”

We went around a lot of the school such as: The 2 playgrounds, Aboriginal garden aka nature play, the oval and sandpit. Some of the challenges were really easy and some of the others weren’t so easy. For the challenges we got to do: Reading, puzzles, word searches and make your own bird.

Lauren and Cameron spent so much time setting everything up and I’m so grateful. I had a lot of fun.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT SPECTACULAR

YEAR 5 SEATON HIGH SCHOOL - STEM DAY

On Wednesday week 5 all of the Year 5 students went to Seaton High School for a learning program.

The first lesson we did was building a tower to hold as much weight as possible and survive an ‘Earthquake’. Tom.T and I were together in a group, we came 3rd with 3 weights on top. Bailey.G and Eddie.P came 1st with 6 weights!

Next we did programing and we programmed little Lego cars to move around, it was fun, Jayden Tom.T and I easily made it the furthest out of everyone in the class.

After that, we did Chemistry. It was AMAZING! We used some dry ice and dipped it in water and smoke came out! Then we dyed the dry ice and added washing detergent and it exploded with green bubbles, at the end, we put our hands on a Van de Graaff generator and it made our hair stick up!

Finally, the grossest of them all: SQUID DESECTING! We had to pull parts of the squid and it made Tom.T sick. I was partnered with Tom.O and he didn’t get to do that much because I was destroying the squid, I’m pretty sure I squashed one its lenses. Once we finished doing that, we went back to school at 2:30 and played outside for the last 10 minutes of the day. It was so cool being a scientist!

BE KIND BAKE SALE

Our students are truly displaying the values of our school and promoting the 'Be Kind' motto that we, as a school, share across all year levels.

A group of students from SD5, with the guidance of their families, wanted to support one of their friends by holding a bake sale to raise funds for the family.

With generous donations of baked goods from across the school, they were able to raise $670 to donate to the Hutchinson-Rehn family.

Thank you to everyone involved and for all your continued support.

WEST LAKES SCHOOL FOOTY TEAM - YEAR 3/4

The footy season is officially over for the year. Our students all had great fun playing with their friends, and every player had the opportunity to captain their team. Outstanding efforts saw all players receive at least 2 encouragement awards for the season.
