Lismore South Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 9-10

Principal Message

And that's a wrap for Term 3! The past 10 weeks have been busy with many opportunities in and out of the classroom for our students. Highlights have included regular assemblies, sports carnivals, Book Week, NAIDOC Week, Performing Arts Festival, K-2 Auskick, 3-6 Basketball program, Public Speaking Competition and visiting performances from Musica Viva and Brainstorm. Our sincere thanks to the executive, teaching team and staff at Lismore South Public School who consistently go above and beyond for every student.

Our first day back for Term 4 is Monday 10th October at Goonellabah PS. We plan for K-6 classes to return to the Lismore South PS site in week 2. Please note that the bus service to Goonellabah PS from Lismore South PS on Bulzomi bus lines will continue for week 1 only. Lismore South PS Ngulliboo Jarjums Preschool will continue learning from Goonellabah PS until a return date is confirmed.

We have a fun week planned for our return to school in week 1 with an additional teaching team joining us from Sydney to support the smooth transition back to our school site. On Friday 14th October, all K-6 students will participate in an excursion.

On behalf of staff we hope you all have a wonderful holiday break.

Regards,

Larissa Polak

Police Youth Liaison Visit

Our Stage 2 and 3 classes participated in an important Cyber-safety lesson with our local Police Youth Liaison officers. We encourage all parents and carers to discuss with students what they understand about their personal safety using the internet. The internet is a great way to socialise, learn, work, play and be entertained — but with technology comes risks.

For parents and carers please remember it is your responsibility to set the ground rules.

  • Closely monitor your child’s internet use and keep devices and a computer in a shared or visible place in the home.
  • Stay aware of how your child uses the internet and explore it with them.
  • Encourage your child to use the same manners and communication they would use offline, and remind them it’s okay to report others who aren't being nice.
  • Establish rules about the types of content or information your child should report to an adult – for example, telling you about any swearing or bad words they find online.
  • Advise your child not to respond to any negative messages and to report any hurtful messages they receive to you or another trusted adult.
  • Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with material that worries or frightens them – this includes immediately telling a trusted adult of any concerns or uncomfortable material and how to close a web page or turn off a screen.
  • Set rules to make sure your child knows what information they can share or post online and the websites they can visit. This includes telling a trusted adult before posting any personal information online, including for competition entries.
  • If your child shows any concerning changes in behaviour or mood then talk to them or seek professional support – Kids Helpline provides free, confidential online counselling for young people, and your school may also be able to help.
  • Consider using filters to help manage your child's online access.

Ngulliboo Jarjums Preschool

This Week at Preschool

This Term we have been focusing on numbers 1 - 10 and one to one correspondence. This is such an important concept for young children to learn and encouraging children to use their fingers and toes as a tool to help them learn is one of the simplest forms of the concept. At preschool we link this to songs and rhyme such as Once I Caught a Fish Alive, and Five Little Ducks. To follow on from explicit teaching children practise these skills in play and everyday scenarios, for example counting everyday objects, building with blocks, playing number games, and pretend play with play dough.

[Early Years Learning Framework. Outcome 5: Children are Effective Communicators. Children demonstrate an increasing understanding of measurement and number using vocabulary to describe size, length, volume, capacity and names of numbers.]

Children have also enjoyed making rose petal perfume, creating spring flowers, cooking play dough party food, building roads and rivers, making clover chains, investigating floating and sinking, and exploring birds in our environment.
