From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We have now settled into the school year at school, something we are very pleased about. Learning of all different kinds and in all different ways is underway in our classrooms which is a pleasure to see. At the conclusion of 2021, we relocated all but one class and began renovation on the top floor of the main teaching and learning building. The temporary, interior walls have been removed making it possible for our senior classes to access double classrooms and use their spaces in different ways. (I will keep you up-to-date throughout the year with further planned renovations as they occur but like everyone we too are waiting on both trade and product.) Moving rooms and making change has been a stimulus for the children giving input into their learning spaces - not all things are possible but many of them are! One request that has been raised repeatedly is the wish to have indoor plants in the classrooms. We have some but I am appealing to all indoor gardeners in our community - if you have a plant or two to rehouse we would love to give them a new home here at school (and very happy to return at the end of the year if you wish it - otherwise they will continue to be looked after by a new group of children). Big or small, we will be very grateful, we know that plants add extra benefit to learning beyond the aesthetic as they contribute to reducing the CO2 levels in classrooms. This helps our students to remain alert and engaged.

House Captain Elections

Since returning to school, our Year 6 students have spent some time preparing and delivering their speeches for House Captains. As we all know, speaking in front of a large group, especially our peers can be quite daunting. The teachers in each House all described high levels of organisation and well-rehearsed and practiced delivery. Students spoke about serving the school community, leading others and being involved. Yesterday, as the elected House Captains were announce, Mr B described the different ways all Year 6 students can be involved in leading our school community and supporting the Houses, working alongside Captains.

The elected House Captains were:

Paxlease:   Captain: Oliver Staniford         Deputy Captain: Ivy Anderson

Wyatt:        Captain: Josh Collings                 Deputy Captain: Matilda Fraser

Decimus:   Captain: Lachie Metcalf           Deputy Captain: Harry Shea

Hardy:        Co-Captains: Angas Perry and Mila McLeay

We wish these students well in their roles for the year ahead!

Annual General Meeting and Governing Council Elections

On Wednesday 23rd February, we held our COVID safe, outdoor Crafers AGM. At this meeting the Governing Council for 2022 was formed. I look forward to working closely with the Council in the coming year. Members of this year's Council include:

  • Chairperson: Amelia Hurren
  • Deputy Chairperson: Phoebe Drage
  • Treasurer: Christian Freriks
  • Secretary: Cara Oosterbaan
  • Tara Cochrane
  • Sally Barton
  • Jamie Fry
  • Caitlin Bate
  • and Kathy Smith as our Teacher Representative

Members of our Governing Council will also lead Subcommittees for the school which include Facilities, Parents and Friends, Promotions and OSHC. Information about and Expression of Interest Forms for the Subcommittees will be sent out separately. I encourage you to have a look and join where there is something of interest to you.

School Gardeners

As I have mentioned previously we are continuing to nurture and improve the gardens and grounds at the school. Over the holidays a great group of people, the 'watering committee' visited school and continued to water the gardens through the summer. Upon returning to school, the gardens looked fantastic, well-loved and well-watered. I would like to extend a great amount of gratitude to the people involved - thank you kindly!

Kind regards,

Chan

Class Parent Representative

As you know, Crafers Primary School prides itself on a strong sense of community, where parents are encouraged to play an active role in the life of the school.

With this in mind, Crafers Primary School will be introducing the role of Parent Class Representative (aka Class Rep) to the school in 2022. We believe this role will be fundamental in helping to further strengthen the school community by helping to build friendships and social networks while helping to support our children, each other and the teachers at class level.

Please see the attached document for further information including how to express your interest in being a Class Rep.

Crafers Pedal Prix

We are excited to announce that Crafers Primary School has registered to race at Pedal Prix 2022. Pedal Prix is a fantastic opportunity open to all of our Year 5 and 6 students, and something that is unique to Crafers Primary School in our Hills region.

Pedal Prix is a team sport that is both highly competitive and very inclusive, offering a supportive environment for participants of all abilities and fitness levels.

To prepare for races, the students are involved in fitness training before school two mornings a week, with at least two practice sessions in the Pedal Prix vehicles on the weekends leading up to each event.

Many of our former students’ fondest memories of primary school are of their experiences at Pedal Prix. Year 6 students who had the opportunity to race last year found it fun and rewarding and are keen to do it all again for the upcoming season. We are looking for more team members to join.

Pedal Prix at Crafers PS is coordinated and run by parents. With the departure of Year 6 & 7 families last year, we also need parents to help run this season and support the team. There are various roles – organising committee, fitness training, bike mechanics, team managers, track practice, fundraising and set up/pack on race day.

Parents who have children interested in joining Pedal Prix this year and would like to know more can speak to Year 6 parents, Wendy Stubbs or Lisa Macdonald or please email craferspp@gmail.com.

Planning is underway with a small team of Year 6 parents and information about this year’s program and registration will be sent to Year 5 and 6 families shortly.

Information about the sport of Pedal Prix in South Australia and events planned for 2022 can be found here: https://ahpvss.com

Mandatory notification training

RRHAN-EC training is how we make sure we:

  • all have the same information about mandatory notifications
  • understand our role working together to safeguard children and young people.

To work or volunteer in education you need to do mandatory notification training.

The course has been updated and all volunteers for Crafers must complete the new course by the end of the year for use in 2022.
