Principal's Message

Hello to all our Students, Parents, Staff and Friends of St Matthew’s,

With only a few weeks to officially being Spring let us hope the cold weather disappears and provides us with some warmer weather. This weekend promises to be 19 degrees. Let us hope the weather bureau has their predictions right. Fingers Crossed.

NEW PARENTS & FRIENDS ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE

The Parents and Friends Association met recently for their AGM (Annual General Meeting) and elected a new committee. Because of COVID a lot of things have been on hold and this was one of them. This Committee will run for the remainder of the year and for 2023 as well.

The new committee is:

President - Corinna Makdesi

Vice President - Marcia Conci

Treasurers - Maria Mella & Mary Aude

Secretary - Chamindri Karunaratne

General Committee members - Jessica Saracino, Nadia Greco + anyone else who would like to join and help out on special occasions. Any parent is most welcome to join.

My sincere thanks to these Ladies for volunteering and we look forward to the upcoming Fathers’ Day Raffle and Fathers’ Day Stall.

SELOLA COURT PARKING

I received an email last Friday from a disgruntled resident complaining that parents are parking over driveways and are making Selola Court dangerous. This person also complained that we have one to many entrances to the school and that Selola Court did not need to exist. She also had a go at our wooden fence, which adjoins our brick fence. I know you are all doing the right thing, but I did say I would remind you in this newsletter.

This is my response:

Thank you for your email, Unfortunately, I do not agree with your statement that it is extremely dangerous. I am on duty at Selola Court both in the mornings and in afternoons and this has never been my observation. We need three entrances/exits, which include Selola Court as a large proportion of our families live north of Anderson Road. Also the foot traffic is almost equal to the amount arriving/departing by car. I have reminded the parents both personally and in our newsletter today to not park over driveways. They were already mindful of this.

Both William St & Lowson St are also extremely busy entrances/exits with high vehicle movement to and from our school.

Are you aware that Moomba Park PS families also use Selola Court to drop off and pick up their children. Unfortunately, more parents have to drive their children to school as predators are more prevalent and parents don't feel their children are safe walking to school on their own.

In regard to the one wooden fence bordering our property that is in disrepair. It would have been replaced with a colourbond fence prior to COVID except the owner of the adjoining rental property will not come to the party in going halves with the school. We have replaced no 14 Selola Court prior to COVID. Sorry we will have to agree to disagree.

Keep doing the right thing parents, you are doing a great job.

BOOK WEEK NEWS

A very big thankyou to all parents, family members and friends who came along and supported our Book Fair last week.  It was great to have so many parents back in the library.  We had a record number of sales with lots of very happy customers.  We sold just under $3500 worth of books.  From that total, St. Matthew’s receives $850 commission which can be used to purchase new books and resources from Book Club in the future.

The dress up and book parade were another huge success with so many fantastic costumes.  At assembly on Friday afternoon, two students from each year level were awarded a small prize for their creative costumes.  Congratulations to the following students:

We were also lucky enough to have two performances of the Bremen Town Musicians.  This was a puppet show which kept all students and teachers very entertained with humour and problems to solve.  Some of our students were lucky enough to be chosen as volunteers to participate in the telling of this story.  Well done for getting involved!

Again, another BIG THANKYOU to the entire St. Matthew’s community for getting involved in our Book Week Celebrations.  WELL DONE EVERYBODY.

St Matthew’s Art Show

After the St Matthew’s Art Show being online for the last two years, we are pleased to announce that this year it is back on site where families can view student art work in real life!

Our Art Show is a celebration of students' work, but most importantly the effort that goes into planning, trialling and completing their artwork. This year families can expect to see whole school collaborative artworks, pieces inspired by Indigenous artists, ceramics, sculptures, collages, perspective drawings, landscapes and mixed media paintings. We look forward to you seeing it all, whilst enjoying music directed by Mr Travers and socialising with a tea or coffee!

St Matthew’s Art Show

When: Thursday 8th September (Week 9)

Where: St Matthew’s Hall

Time: 7pm- 8.30pm

St Matthew's Basketballers

On August 11th, the students of St Matthews competed in the annual Hoop Time Basketball Tournament at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium. Our Grade 5 and 6 students put on a fantastic performance on the day with the Grade 6 students winning 3 out of 5 games and the Grade 5 students winning 2 out 3 games. This tournament encourages the aspects of teamwork and sportsmanship within the sport of Basketball, which the students thoroughly enjoyed a lot.

A special thank you to all the parents who came to support the children throughout the day. I know taking time out of your busy days to come watch is greatly appreciated.

CROCHET CLUB

Dear Families,

Monday lunchtimes is a busy time in the library with one corner with an exciting group of Drama activities and at the back of the library a small group learning to crochet but we need your help.

Unfortunately, we do not have enough wool or crochet needles for the amount of children who are now coming along to practice the art of Crochet.

So, we are asking if anyone has any left-over wool, any old crochet needles that are no longer being used we would love to have them to help our children out and learn a new skill.

If you do have, any supplies that you no longer need please send them to school marked clearly for the Crochet club.

Thank you in advance

Mrs Howden and Miss Di Pasquale.
