From the Principal

Welcome back to school for Term 4. It has been wonderful to see our students return refreshed after the school vacation and quickly settle back into school routines. Term 4 is traditionally a very busy and productive term, filled with exciting opportunities and events including major excursions, Kindergarten 2020 transition, School Spectacular, Year 6 farewell, Modanville's Got Talent,  Semester Two student reports, Intensive Swimming and our end of year celebrations. It will be important to stay up to date with the upcoming events on our school calendar.

Over the next four weeks all classes will be completing Child Protection lessons with their class teacher. Students will be developing an increased awareness of safe and respectful relationships as well as increasing their skills in recognising, assessing risk and responding to unsafe situations.

Topics covered:

Sense of Self: Similarities and differences, Introduction to the UN Rights of a Child.

Power in Relationships: Rights and responsibilities, trusted adults, power in relationships.

Recognising Abuse: Warning signs, body parts, types of abuse - physical, sexual and emotional, safe and unsafe touching and secrets.

Protective Strategies: Responding to risk, NO GO TELL, communication.

This week is World Teachers Day on Friday 25 October. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and personally thank teachers for the important role they play inside our classrooms and out in the community. Have a wonderful week!

Regards,

Larissa Polak

R/Principal

Attendance

If students arrive late, it is a requirement that they are signed-in at the school office by the adult who has brought them to school. If you need to collect your child early from school please come to the office first to get a leave slip. You will then take it to the classroom to show the teacher and collect your child.

Please explain all absences for your child/ren within seven days of them being away. This is a DoE requirement. You may explain an absence via the SkoolBag app, phone the school and leave a message or send in a written note. Thank you

School Grounds Makeover

Thank you to Gary Mazzorana for delivering a load of donated lemon myrtle mulch for our school gardens. The students have been busy weeding, putting down newspaper and then shovelling a layer of mulch over the top. This will hopefully look after our gardens through the anticipated dry weather. The students have absolutely loved watering in our new plants. It has been terrific to see our students taking pride in their school and enjoying showing responsibility and care for their environment. The mulch donation was organised by the Powell and Ianna families. Thank you!

Thank you to Alan, our GA, for extending the paved area around our small undercover outdoor activity centre over the school holidays. It looks fantastic and has improved the area the students use for playing in the shade. The P&C has funded the purchase of the pavers, hire of equipment and metal dust.

Save the date - Cyber Safety Presentation

On Thursday 5th December at 4pm, parents are invited to a special presentation on cyber safety presented by 'Safe on Social'. This presentation has been kindly funded by our P&C. Social media is one of the biggest influences on our children's world and wellbeing. Please save the date and come along to be informed about the most up to date information on keeping safe online. https://www.safeonsocial.com/

Save your bottle caps

As a school we will be helping Envision Hands collect 2,000,000 plastic bottle caps, to recycle them into mobility aids for children in need. A box will be placed in the office for all of your plastic milk, soft drink and water caps to be collected. You can even drop off plastic bread clips!

More information regarding the cause can be found at https://envision.org.au/ envision-hands/

Apply for Year 7 Entry to a Selective High School in 2021

Selective high schools cater for academically high potential and gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. Selective schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability and using specialised teaching methods and materials.

Selective high schools are unzoned so parents can apply regardless of where they live. Parents apply when the student is in Year 5. The students sit the test in March of Year 6. Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 12 March 2020.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2021, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from late-September 2019 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7

Former MPS Student Success Story

A big congratulations to former Modanville Public School student, Claire Farrington, who last week signed with the Brisbane Roar W-League Team. Claire was a student at Modanville from Kinder to Year 6. Our school community wish her well in her first season as a professional soccer player.

Mobile Library Visits MPS

The Mobile Library van will be visiting our school on Tuesday, 29 October 2.00pm-3.30pm. Students are welcome to borrow from the Mobile Library and should bring their library card and books to return on the day.  Other dates set include 12 November, 26 November, 10 December and 24 December.

Crunch & Sip

At Modanville PS students are encouraged to bring a Crunch & Sip snack daily. Giving students the chance to re-fuel with fruit or vegetables helps to improve physical and mental performance and concentration in the classroom, as well as promoting long term health.

P&C News

Welcome back, we hope you and your family had a lovely break. With 3 weeks to go to the MPS Community Garage Sale, we are getting very excited! We have nearly 15 stalls booked already and expect many more over the coming weeks. This is a great way for you to make some extra dollars before the Christmas period whilst also having a de-clutter at the same time.

We would appreciate your assistance in making this day a success. Please return your form back regarding helping at the BBQ stall or donating items as soon as possible.

A busking roster will be going home, if you know of anyone who may be interested in sharing their talent.

Any questions, big or small please email modanvillepublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au

Thank you for your continuing support.
