Lismore South Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 1-3

Principal Message

Welcome to the 2023 school year. We have had an incredibly smooth start to the year and students have settled into their new classes  with ease. It has been great to see students arriving at school on time, ready and eager to learn.

A special welcome to our new families and all of our Kindergarten students who commenced ‘big school’ with smiles and enthusiasm. We wish them and their families all the best as they embark on what will hopefully be a long and happy educational journey at Lismore South Public School.

I would like to remind all families that our school supports the wearing of full school uniform. A school uniform promotes a sense of belonging for students and creates a positive identity for our school community.

We hope all families will be able to join us at our first social event of the year. Come along and meet the team for 2023. See information below.

Kind regards,

Larissa Polak

Welcome Back

Class Dojo

The NSW Department of Education has changed their policy around the use of third party software in schools and the sharing of information. Schools are now required to advise parents and families of the information collected by these applications, where it is stored and who the information is shared with. The school then needs to gain written consent to use these applications. Staff are currently compiling the information required to gain parental consent. As a result the use of these applications has been delayed and we are reviewing which applications we will continue to use. Our communication protocols and platforms are also being reviewed. Should you need to get a message to your child or wish to speak to a teacher please call the school office and staff will assist. Your support with this is appreciated.

PBL Focus - Be Sun Safe

Our PBL focus this fortnight is to BE SUN SAFE - WEAR A BROAD BRIMMED SCHOOL HAT to play in the playground. Alternatively, students need to play under the COLA if they do not have a hat. If your child needs a new school hat please pop into the office and purchase one using your Education Hardship funds or the Back to School Vouchers from Services NSW.

Off to a great start

Kindergarten 2023

We extend a special welcome to our new Kindergarten students who have transitioned to ‘big school’ so smoothly and to our new families who have joined our school community. Our Kindergarten students have settling into school really quickly with Mrs Uretir. Our Kindergarten class is called Jingrrd Jingrrd which means Willy Wagtails in Bundjalung.

Swimming Carnival Highlights

A big thank you to Mrs Golding and Mr Whalan for organising a successful Swimming Carnival. The day was very well organised and the students enjoyed competing in their preferred events. Congratulations to all students for their sportsmanship, their willingness to participate, their good behaviour and for being great ambassadors for our school.

Office News

Mobile phones

Mobile phones, including devices which act as mobile phones are not permitted at our school. In fact, from 2021, student mobile phones are banned across all NSW Department of Education (DoE) Primary schools. Any student phones need to be handed in at the front office and then collected at the end of the day, as per our existing long-standing policy. If there is an issue at school with your child/ren, the school will contact you.

Update Contact Information

It is important that your child's records are kept up to date.  If you have had any changes to; phone numbers, address, emergency contact people or family situation, please either send in a note or contact the office immediately to ensure our records are kept up to date. It is also very important to keep your child’s medical details up to date. Asthma and Anaphylaxis plans need to be updated annually.

Uniform Orders

Uniforms are available to purchase from the school office during office hours. If you wish to order online using a POP payment,  please contact the office to ensure  the items are in stock.  Some families still have Education Hardship Funds available which can be used for purchasing uniforms.

Preschool News

Welcome

Welcome to our new and returning families for 2023. We have had a positive start to the year, enjoying our updated preschool environment which includes a cubby, a rest retreat and our beloved sandpit. We know as our environment continues to develop it is going to bring your children hours of endless fun.

It is important to point out a few safety requirements as we begin the new year so we can all work together to keep our children safe.

Please ensure that all doors and gates are firmly closed behind you when entering and exiting the preschool classroom.

Please encourage your children to walk on the ramp leading to preschool and not use it as a play space when waiting in the mornings. There is a lovely shaded area at the bottom of the ramp with seats to sit while you wait should you arrive before 9:00am.

We look forward to getting to know our families this year and working collaboratively to ensure your children have a wonderful year in preschool.

Healthy Lunchboxes

Packing a healthy balanced lunch is the best way to ensure your child has enough energy to engage in a full preschool day.  We have 3 main meals at preschool per day and your child will require the following: fruit or veg snack in the morning, lunch (main meal) consisting of a sandwich or something similar eg. wrap, sushi, rice cakes, pasta etc.; and afternoon tea - this could consist of snacks such as yoghurt, pikelets, cheese, sliced vegetable and fruit.

Please don't send lollies, poppers or chocolates to preschool, this includes roll ups, fruit lollies and lolly strings and always choose water for your child's water bottle. See the image below to give you some new and fresh ideas for snacks to pack.

Additionally if you could please send fruit or vegetables in your child's preferred way that would be very helpful. Eg. peeled or cut.
