The Lake Primary School Newsletter

# 33 –October 25th 2018

From the Principal’s Desk….

Week 3 commenced with a terrific Monday Morning Assembly under the new shade sails. Mr McInerney is in charge of organising and coordinating each weekly assembly and excels in this role. We are endeavouring to create additional opportunities to enhance the ‘student voice’ in our school. It was wonderful to observe the large number of students talking confidently in front of an audience. We had our 13 Regional Athletic stars from the recent visit to Bendigo mentioning their achievements, 12 ICAS Mathematics students were presented with certificates for their impressive results, students from 3/4A recited poetry and Charlee Cramp and Avril Hyland from 1/2C expertly shared their Information Report on recycling that they also shared at the recent ‘Special Forever’ opening at the Mildura Arts Centre last Thursday. Weekly Awards were announced from Week 2. Yr 6 students Lucy Garraway, Ethan Dwyer and Montana Hemming joined School Captain Shae Zrna in confidently leading the Assembly. Next Monday our large number of Mildura Show entry students will be acknowledged.

2019 Prep Orientation Session 3 Next Tuesday October 30th

We look forward to our excited 2019 Prep students once again joining us for our 3rd session next Tuesday from 9:00-11:30. The Prep teachers have been doing a super job transitioning our newest recruits into our school setting in readiness for a great start in 2019.  A reminder email/note has being distributed to all existing and new families. Each family will also be provided with a copy of our 2019 Supplementary Prep Booklet.

Teacher Visit to Red Cliffs Primary

On Wednesday our teachers ventured out to Red Cliffs Primary after school from 4:00-5:30pm to continue an ongoing collaboration with our RCPS colleagues. Throughout 2018 teachers from both schools have been trialling High Impact Teaching Strategies to further enhance our teaching and learning focus. (For example Questioning and Collaborative Learning.)

World Teachers Day Tomorrow

World Teachers Day is being celebrated throughout Australia tomorrow. This is an opportune time to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Lake Primary Teachers. Teaching is far from a 9:00-5:30 job. If you pass our school early in the morning or late after dismissal time and on weekends you will notice our teachers putting in extra work to benefit their students. A large body of planning and assessment is also completed at home. It is a privilege to be a teacher but also a role that carries enormous responsibility and requires a diverse set of skills and capabilities. Well done and thanks to all of our teachers. I’m certain that they would also appreciate a kind word acknowledging their dedicated efforts from our students/parents. A special Morning Tea is being organised for tomorrow.

Assistant Principal Report

  • In last week’s newsletter, I spoke about our current methods of informing families about their child’s progress. I also offered some insight into the results of our ‘2018 Parent Opinion Survey’. Collectively, the Leadership team and extended staff have been engaging in indepth discussions around strategies to improve communication with families about student progress. I have been very impressed with teacher’s commitment in this area. Over the last two weeks in particular, you may have received a text message, Compass notification or been privileged to a face-to-face discussion outlining an improved aspect of your child’s development. Transparency is key and regular and honest conversations are a vital piece of the puzzle.

  • This week’s assembly was a particularly uplifting occasion. Under the guidance of Shae Zrna, we had three different Yr.6 students lead proceedings, outstanding ICAS Numeracy results were celebrated, 3/4A delivered a class poem, Charlee Cramp and Avril Hyland shared their ‘Special Forever’ speech and the regional athletics competitors relayed their recent experience in Bendigo. In addition, the student audience demonstrated an impressive level of respect throughout. All staff have been working consistently hard on raising student expectations with this whole staff commitment continuing to lift standards across our school. Keep up the great work everyone!

Prep A Focus

This Term in the Prep unit our Inquiry focus is Australian Animals.  To begin the unit students brainstormed together in small groups – they worked really well and had some great discussion about which Animals they think are ‘Australian Animals’.  All students contributed some great ideas to the charts and were very proud of their work!  Fantastic team work Prep A!

PE News

In the PE program this week all students have been learning the skills and rules of T 20 cricket. We are particularly focusing on our bowling and bating technique.
