A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

OBSERVATIONS IN CLASSROOMS

Over the last few weeks, Andrea Hayden and I have been undertaking formal observations in classrooms and specialist programs. We have been looking at how students are learning and interacting with others in that learning, and, the ways that teachers are engaging them in their learning process. We have been very impressed with how students are having a go and using positive mindset to approach their learning. The culture across the school is obviously one where teachers encourage students to rise to challenges and high order thinking in their work and are able to feel safe to do so. There were clear opportunities being provided for students to engage in rich discussions, problem solving and sharing their thinking about how they were problem solving. While the leaders were observing, members of the SVIL team also observed in pairs, with a focus on observing how students were thinking about their learning. They provided students with feedback about what they noticed. There is a lot of interesting work being done across the school in both Literacy and Numeracy areas and in the specialist programs. Why don’t you ask your child about her/his Reading and Mathematics goals and what they have been doing in Reading, Maths and Writing in particular!

… AND CONGRATULATIONS TO HOUSE 9 STUDENTS ON YOUR FABULOUS ART SHOW TODAY. WE CERTAINLY HAVE MANY BUDDING ARTISTS IN OUR MIDST!

REMINDER: INTERVIEWS NEXT WEEK

By now you should have received an invitation and booked a time to meet with your child’s teacher next week. The interview is a time when you and your child will be able to meet with your child’s teacher to share your child’s progress and strengths and discuss areas for improvement. You will also be able to talk about ways you can help your child at home and encourage responsibility for learning. Your child needs to participate in this discussion so it is very important that s/he attends the meeting with you. Your child’s semester 1 written summary report will also be tabled at the meeting. The semester 1 written report does not have comments for specific subject areas (only achievement levels and effort). This information will be shared at the meeting.

If you have not yet booked a time for an interview, I strongly encourage you to do so, as it is a very important opportunity to share information about your child’s development and semester 1 written report.

Please note that due to current COVID expectations, we ask you to please scan in (or sign in) at the classroom door and maintain social distancing at all times while waiting. It is also preferred that siblings are not brought to the interview.

Please note that on Wednesday 23rd June from 3:30 to 7:00, Houses 1, 4 and 5 will be open with our Specialist Team present for families to visit and speak to them on the way to or from interviews. Wallis Sensei and Gray Sensei, Japanese teachers will be in House 5. Ellie Burford PE/Science teacher will be in House 4, and, Tania Bailey Music/Drama teacher and Emma Belshaw Dance teacher, will begin in House 1 then move to House 4. These teachers look forward to seeing you and sharing information about their programs with you.

PLEASE, A REMINDER ARRIVE AT SCHOOL ON TIME ...

A Few Words from the Deputy Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Friday afternoon the year 6/7 leaders visited all classrooms to discuss the important issue of safety. This vast topic is covered in our curriculum but it never hurts to give our students reminders of some of the ways they can keep themselves safe. All our children are taught the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum and we constantly reiterate the two main themes:

·       We all have the right to be safe

·       We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

There are many online guides for parents and we would especially remind you about https://www.esafety.gov.au/ for cyber safety. I came across the online safety slogan “Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Curious, Be Secure” and I thought this was a wonderful mantra not just for cyber safety, but also for life in general.

On Friday morning I had the pleasure of visiting the House 9 Art Exhibition. What a wonderful way for some of our senior students to share their learning with the whole student body. Congratulations to all those who have created with intent and produced an art piece of which they are proud.

Over the last two weeks of this term we have three school tours planned for prospective parents. If you know anyone who is thinking of enrolling their child or children at our school in 2022, or beyond, please encourage them to phone or email the front office. As I say to parents of kindergarten children, once we have accepted your enrolment forms your child is enrolled regardless of where you are living. With the move of year sevens to high school next year we are keen to know our 2022 enrolment numbers as soon as possible.

We are looking forward to parent/teacher/student interviews next week. Remember the specialist areas and teachers are available for curriculum discussions and to show case our students’ learning on Wednesday 23rd June until 7pm.

Kind Regards,

Andrea Hayden

Deputy Principal

A Few Words from the Wellbeing Leader

The last few weeks Joey and I have been working on developing the Interoception Room at HCEPS. We are looking forward to having this up and running in the early weeks of Term 3 and will provide more information on its implementation soon!

Interoception is our 8th sense and it is the pre-requisite skill for self-regulation. The benefits of Interoception is that it:

  • Helps children and young people connect to and learn to understand their bodies and emotions.
  • Helps children and young people develop a sense of belonging. Without Interoception, social skills   are just the application of rules and not a meaningful way of interacting.
  • Classrooms where Interoception is being taught have decreasing behavioural challenges over the school year – HCEPS classes already participate in Interoception Activities twice a day.

We challenge you to try this activity with your whole family over the weekend:

Structure of interoception activity:

  • Any activity that changes our body state whilst we notice how our body feels
  • Complete an activity for at least 30 seconds
  • Guiding question: Where did you notice that activity (which body part)?
  • Repeat the same activity for a second time, redirect the child to focus on a particular body part related to the activity
  • Guiding question: What did you notice about that particular body part?
  • The child is encouraged to identify a change in their body state (eg; stretch-relax, hot-cold, soft-hard) and where they felt that change (arch or ball of foot, on top)

Resource Recommendation

Raising Young People – no doubt one of the toughest but yet most rewarding things we do in our lives!

I know as a parent of 4 children myself, that sometimes I wish there was a “Parenting/Caregivers Handbook” to help me work out how to best address developmental, social and emotional issues that pop-up every now and then.

Parenting SA have come to my rescue. They have a range of Parent Easy Guides – providing a range of tips and tricks to assist in a variety of areas that we are often confronted with but despite our best intentions, can feel lost with where to start i.e. Bedwetting, Blended Families, Peer Pressure and Sibling Rivalry, just to name a few. So if you need a hand in addressing some tricky areas of raising young people, jump on to https://parenting.sa.gov.au/ and have a quick read.

LIGHTHOUSE LEADERS' LETTER

On the last day of the term, Friday July 2nd, we will be having a whole school pyjama casual day. We are having this fundraiser to raise money for the students to donate to a South Australian charity that is based here in Adelaide called Puddle Jumpers (PJ). Puddle Jumpers is a non-profit organisation that accepts clothing, food, furniture, cash and equipment. PJ helps kids who are struggling with social development and strives to help them. They believe that all kids matter and all their problems matter. They also believe that every kid deserves the right to engage in happy and fun experiences in their life. To donate to this wonderful charity organisation the children of HCEPS would be asked to bring a gold coin donation if they wish to come in pyjamas. Children are not allowed to bring oodies, and they need to still wear appropriate shoes suitable for school. The pyjamas have to cover the shoulders and can’t show the stomach of the student. We would also suggest that students do not wear pyjama shorts as it is winter and would be too cold. We hope the students will enjoy this fun day as a good way to finish off the term and we hope they will respect the terms we have requested.

The Lighthouse Leaders,

Taylah, Eli, Lacey-Jay, Ashley, Noah and Evie.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTORAL CARE WORKER

Can vs. can’t

I’m sure that some of you remember the Commonwealth Bank’s advertising campaign from a few years ago. The billboards and bus stop ads that simply read ‘can’t’ and then changed to ‘can’ after a few weeks. As the community learns more about growth mindsets we are hearing the word ‘can’ more frequently and the word ‘can’t’ less.

I recently heard the poem ‘Ode to Can’ again. I thought about how it is such a beautiful expression of the growth mindset and I just wanted to share it with you.

Ode to Can.

There’s a four lettered word

As offensive as any

It holds back the few

Puts a stop to the many.

You can’t climb that mountain

You can’t cross the sea

You can’t become anything you want to be.

He can’t hit a century

They can’t find a cure.

She can’t think about leaving or searching for more.

Because Can’t is a word with a habit of stopping

The ebb and the flow of ideas

It keeps dropping

itself where we know in our hearts it’s not needed

And saying “don’t go” when we could have succeeded.

But those four little letters

That end with a T

They can change in an instant

When shortened to three.

We can take off the T

We can do it today

We can move forward not back

We can find our own way.

We can build we can run

We can follow the sun

We can push we can pull

We can say I’m someone

Who refuses to believe

That life can’t be better

With the removal of one

Insignificant letter.

Nude Food Day

It was great to see so many nude food choices this morning as we visited classes. 75% of the school brought nude food – well done.

A special well done to 6AS and 6E, who had 88% of their class with nude food – we hope you enjoyed your surprise at lunch time.

Throughout the rest of the year we will be doing ‘spot checks’ of different classes with prizes for students who are regularly bringing nude food, as well as more whole school Nude Food Days to come.

Thanks for helping us reduce waste at HCEPS,
