The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program is designed to bring together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures by helping to foster an environment that assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.  As part of the SWPBS program, a rewards system has been developed to encourage students to always:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

COVID-19 Update

Following yesterday's announcements, schools are now required to use the Service Victoria QR Codes for electronic record keeping to capture the details of all visitors accessing school buildings and indoor facilities.

QR codes will be required to be used by:

  • all visitors, including contractors, external Department staff and building and maintenance staff
  • all parents who enter buildings when on the school site

QR code check ins will not be required for staff or students, or parents who come onto school grounds for drop off or pick up, but do not enter buildings.

All building entry and exit points will now display QR code posters.

If you are required to enter buildings on school grounds, for whatever purpose, you are now required to use the provided QR code check-in.

If you are not able to check in using a smartphone or tablet, a Kiosk check-in service is available at the office.

Using the QR code system does not replace the existing requirement to also sign in at reception (for a specific purpose).

Thank you for your support and understanding of this important health direction.

Other advice remains as follows:.

  • Stay home when unwell and get tested
  • School staff and secondary school students aged 12 or older must carry a face mask at all times and wear a face mask indoors when at school, unless an exception applies.  Face masks are recommended to be worn outdoors at school where physical distancing of 1.5m cannot be maintained
  • Children under 12 years of age and students at primary school are not required to wear face masks at school.

  • For the purposes of communicating, teachers and education support staff are not required to wear face masks while teaching, but those who wish to do so, can.

  • Visitors and parents must also observe face mask requirements.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any concerns.

Mid-Year Exams

Students in Years 9-11 sat their mid-year exams this week.  These exams were pushed back a week following the recent lockdown in an effort to help students prepare.  Feedback from staff who supervised these assessments has been extremely positive, suggesting that most students prepared thoroughly and allocated their time effectively during the exam sessions.  Sitting for exams is a skill in itself, and often the experience is just as valuable to students as the outcome.  I would like to congratulate all students on the positive way they approached this exam period.

Nhill College Production

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a school putting on a production in the COVID era will be determined to make it work, no matter what.  And such is certainly the case when it comes to the Nhill College secondary school production of "Pride and Prejudice", a play adapted by Jane Kendall from the Jane Austen novel.

The story follows the Bennett family, and their success (or otherwise) in obtaining suitable matches for each of the five daughters in the family.  Will the sweet Jane, independent Elizabeth, bookish Mary, fretful Kitty and flirtatious Lydia find husbands?  And will their mother ever stop in her frankly embarrassing attempts to match-make them all?!

The cast for this show have been working extremely hard since part-way through term one, and the show is looking fantastic.  Current COVID restrictions have made rehearsing a little more difficult, but the cast have shown they are extremely versatile and resilient.  Throughout the rehearsal period, many laughs have been had, and a few tears shed (mainly from one cast member over the romance between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy!), and we look forward to many more wonderful moments to come.

Tickets for this production are now on sale either at the Nhill College office or through TryBooking: https://www.trybooking.com/BRSIK

Performances to take place at the Nhill Memorial Community Centre, Friday 30th July at 7:30pm, and Saturday 31st July at 2:00pm and 7:30pm.  $20 per adult, $15 per child/concession.

Free Desktop Computers

As part of our ICT upgrades around the school, the College has available older model desktop computers to give away.  These devices are approximately six to eight years old.  Being older machines, they are not capable of intensive computing work; however, they are still more than capable of running Microsoft Office and surfing the internet.

If parents or guardians (or any members of the community) are interested in these old machines they need to email Mr Shrive at joshua.shrive@education.vic.gov.au to arrange collection by the end of Term 2.  Students will not be able to claim a device without permission from home.

These computers will be provided “as is”, without further technical support.  That said, if a device is found not to be working when it arrives home we will be happy to take it back and arrange a swap if other computers are still available.  Only desktop computers remain to be distributed as all available laptops have been allocated.

Uniform Reminders

With cooler weather conditions that come at this time of year it is timely to remind everyone of the current winter uniform options available to students.  With the recent addition of a Nhill College jacket, it was decided that students are permitted to wear that jacket - or the similar jackets of the Nhill Sporting Club and Yanac Hockey Club - during class time.  Students are permitted to wear other types of jackets to school, but they will be asked to remove them when they come to class.  Beanies are another item that can be popular with some students at this time of year.  As with all forms of headwear, students are expected to leave them in their lockers during class times.

Due to the colder weather, Breakfast and Social Club will be held in the canteen.  This will allow the College to continue to provide a safe, warm and social environment for students.  Positive relationships will be encouraged between peers, staff and volunteers. Breakfast and Social Club also provides informal learning around nutrition, table manners and other life skills.

Breakfast and Social Club will continue to held on Monday and Thursday mornings during school term.  All Nhill College students are invited to meet at the canteen to eat breakfast and / or socialise together.  Breakfast will be offered from 8.30am until the commencement of school, free of charge.

New Uniform Item

Last week, after reviewing results of recent parent and student surveys, the SRC recommended to school council that a new polo shirt option be added to the Nhill College uniform.  This recommendation was later endorsed at last Tuesday's school council meeting.

In making this decision, both the SRC and school council acknowledged the feedback provided in the surveys and agreed that while they were happy to introduce the new navy polo shirt design, they would like to see the existing light blue polo shirt continue to be made available through the College's uniform store.  This will give students a choice of two options to wear as part of their uniform.

While it is exciting to be able to announce this decision, the new uniform items are not yet available to purchase.  Orders are now being placed and parents will be informed when the new shirts are available to try on for size at the uniform store.  Please keep reading the newsletter for further details.

Thank you to all of the students and parents who took the time to provide their feedback on this matter by completing the uniform surveys.

MATES4MATES

Funky Sock Friday!

Just a quick reminder that every student from Foundation to Year 12 are invited to wear their funkiest socks on all Fridays! Whether you have pairs of socks with wacky patterns, palm trees on them or brightly coloured designs, so long as it is funky then feel free to wear them on Friday. Students are also requested to bring with them a silver or gold coin which will be donated to the organisation Mates4Mates. They are one of Australia’s leading charities actively changing the lives of current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members, and their families, impacted by service. Australian Defence Force Veterans have already given so much back to us so it’s time we gave back to them.

School Attendance: Every Day Counts

Research shows that the academic and social development of students is affected each day they are absent, and that going to school every day is the single most important part of your child's education.  Following the potential disruptions to the social and academic progress of students caused due to COVID-19 last year, it is more important than ever for children to be at school.

If your child is unwell or absolutely cannot attend school for some reason, it is important to let the school know of their absence and the reason why prior to the day if planned or at the start of the day if the absence is not planned.  The easiest way to do this is via Compass.  Alternatively, you can contact the office at school on 5391 2111.

If your child is absent and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message asking you to contact the school with an explanation.  If we do not receive a reply to our text message, we will be following up with a phone call.

For any questions regarding attendance, please contact Kim Magrath on 5391 2111.

CANCELLATION OF YEAR 11 MELBOURNE TRIP

We regretfully advise that after much consideration Nhill College has made the decision cancel the 2021 Year 11 Melbourne Trip.  With current DET advice, workplace density limits and the general uncertainty in Melbourne we feel there was no other option at this stage.

As this cohort of students missed their Work Experience opportunity in Year 10, we feel it is very important they do have the opportunity to participate this year.  As a result we confirm that Year 11 Work Experience will proceed from the 12th – 16th July, in regional Victorian areas only.   All students who were attending the Melbourne trip have been spoken to individually about other options that may suit them, and should see Mrs Sampson as soon as possible for any assistance in obtaining an alternative placement.  Time is of the essence on this as all placements, including paperwork, need to be completely finalised by Friday 25th June.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mrs Sampson or Mrs Coughlan as soon as possible.

2021 BYOD News: Edunet Specifications Sheet for Parents

The shift to remote learning last year led to significant changes to our traditional methods of providing students who don't have BYODs with access to school laptops.  These arrangements will stay in place for this year, which is fantastic for all those families who do not have a BYOD, as we are committed to ensuring that that this provision will be available in 2021.  However, there will be one major change to the borrowing arrangements this year.  Those students who do not have a BYOD, will not be permitted to take their school allocated laptop home with them each night and will be required to return them to the charging station in the library at the end of the day.  This will help us to avoid any damage in transit between school and home, as well as acting as an incentive for families to consider a BYOD that can be used at home as well as at school.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the attachment below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.

The online ordering portal is accessible via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au  The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NC2021

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

Welcome to Facebook

Last year we successfully trialled a Nhill College Facebook page to help us promote school events and activities with the wider community.  We will continue to use Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week.  However, our Facebook page has allowed us to broaden exposure to the school and reach a number of people who may not have otherwise had access to our formal communication channels.  Our Facebook page will continue to be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College.  All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111.  To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).

Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts.

Access to Nhill College Newsletter

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter.  However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass.  The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au.  Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it.  Spread the word!
