Principal's Message

Dear Community

I’d like to start with a couple of thank yous this fortnight. Firstly, thank you to our community for being so understanding and flexible as we have struggled to maintain staff across the school. We have been able to do this with minimal disruption to students, largely because of our fantastic staff, who even though they are at times feeling a little tired and overwhelmed, have stepped up to support each other by taking in extra students where required, covering extra duties and often forgoing their planning time when specialist teachers haven’t been available to take their classes. It is once again a true testament to the Scarborough way, with everyone chipping in to do what needs to be done with minimum fuss.

 I’d also like the thank our wonderful P&C for their efforts during the election on Saturday. Their very successful sausage sizzle and cake stall has earned them valuable dollars which can be used to support our school in a variety of ways. This would not be possible without the efforts of those who gave up their Saturday to make this happen. I hear that whilst they were pretty exhausted at the end of the day, all the hard work was worth it and there was a fantastic community atmosphere that was enjoyed by all. So, thank you!

Below is a list of classrooms that have had COVID positive cases over the last week where the staff/students were possibly at school whilst infectious.

This information is just to give you the opportunity to monitor for symptoms and test where required.

Unless otherwise stated, the room concerned has had one or two cases, but not a significant cluster.

Thank you to everyone this week who has let the school know of cases in your families. Below are the processes that need to be followed to keep us all safe.

Below is a snapshot of things to do if your child becomes COVID positive or a close contact:

If your child tests positive

  • Please notify the school by emailing either myself or the front office
  • Your child must isolate for 7 days.
  • Any siblings of the positive child may still come to school in accordance with the close contact details below

If your child is a close contact

  • Please notify the school by emailing either myself or the front office
  • Your child may still attend school providing they;
  • have no symptoms (regardless of any test result)
  • have a negative RAT each day (we encourage this to be in the morning, before school, where possible)
  • There is no requirement for close contact students of primary school age to wear masks, although they can if they choose to.
  • If your child becomes symptomatic during the day, you will be contacted to collect them.

On a final note regarding COVID, the Department of Education has provided each child with 20 free RATs. These are now available for you to pick up from the front office between 8:30 and 3:30 each day.

School Board

I would like to welcome Chris Doohan onto our Board. Chris has a daughter in kindy and has worked in several high schools, most recently Churchlands SHS as a Head of Learning Area in HASS (History and Social Sciences). We look forward to having him on board!

We still have 1 Parent Representative vacancy on the School Board with a tenure that will run from now until the end of 2023.  You will need to be a parent at Scarborough Primary School until the end of 2023 to be eligible.

The Board’s role is required to help the school deliver a quality education experience to our children by:

  • establishing and reviewing the goals, priorities and policies of the school at a strategic level;
  • supporting the development of our School Business Plan;
  • noting school budgets;
  • discussing the performance of our school in achieving the goals set; and
  • promoting our school within the community.

So, if the description above peaks your interest we would love you to consider nominating. If you are interested in nominating for a Parent Representative position, please email to Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au or express your interest in person to the front office. Nominations close at 3:00pm, Friday 3 June 2022.

Should there be more than one nomination, all parents will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates will then be asked to provide a 250 word brief and a portrait style photograph to include on the voting slip. New members of the Board will undertake training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board.

More information on the Board can be found on our school website

School Photos - Envelopes Coming Home Today

Coming home today with your child will be an envelope for school photos. The envelopes outline the photo packages available and include the order form for parents to complete and return on the day of your child's photos. Should you require an additional envelope for another caregiver please let the office know and we can send one home.

All students MUST bring their completed personalised envelopes to photo day - even if they have opted not to purchase photos.

Should you wish to have photos of siblings taken together please see the front office for a separate envelope.

Student class photos will be taken on Monday 30 May with sibling photos taken before school at 8.15am in the library. Children in Kindy G2 will be having photos taken on Thursday 2 June, with any sibling photos with children in Kindy G2 taken that morning at 8.30am.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Join the adventure!

We encourage you to join us in unlocking the wonderful world of reading for your children. Help them to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Will they fly above the clouds, dive into the ocean or jump into a rocket ship? All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are challenged to read 12 books by 9 September 2022.

You can help your children sign up via the website, choose their own avatar and log all the books they read over the course of the Challenge. Weekly prizes will be awarded to students who log a book that week, with major prizes drawn when the challenge ends.

Books don’t have to be in English – children are encouraged to read books in their first language.

There are extraordinary tourism prizes to be won each week.

You can sign up your children via the Premiers Reading Challenge website (premiersreadingchallenge.wa.edu.au).

We are always looking for canteen volunteers. So, if you or anyone in your immediate family (aunts, uncles, grandparents etc) have any Friday mornings available, Laura would love some assistance in the SPS canteen.

Helping out in Canteen means that you come in and support Laura for 2 hours, usually between 10-12pm or 11-1pm; whatever works for you! Duties consist of washing dishes, prepping pizzas, handing out lunches, etc.

E-mail us at the P&C or speak to Laura on Fridays in the canteen if you are keen to help.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8.30am on Friday. Cash is not accepted.
