FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Welcome to a new Term and a special welcome to those new (and returning) families, as our latest members of our School family.

Whilst this Spring Recess has not allowed the usual opportunities for travel, I know many of you have managed some time out of Sydney and enjoyed a selection of the great places and joys of our State. I know the benefit a week in the country has done me! Of course, through this time, our Year 12 students have been preparing for their examinations. We ran a full timetable of classes and further practice examinations and many of the group worked in the library every day, and sessions that they were not in a class. To make this happen, our HSC teachers have given enormous support over these past three weeks; so, thank you to these marvellous Staff for your continuing dedication and care to ensure our students are in the best possible place to undertake their examinations. The first paper, English, is to be written next Tuesday.

Through the Spring Recess we received too the wonderful news of Callbacks in the Performing Arts. Emily in Music and Shantani and Lily in Dance.

Term 4

Term 4 is a marathon, run in sprint conditions. We have examination blocks and significant assessment pieces to be concluded beyond the examination period. Each style of assessment in Stages 4 and 5 is crucial and should be treated as such. And for Stage 6, ensuring students have formed a sound study regime, recognising the importance of their study from the start, and making smart choices when social events are inevitably in conflict with required academic time, is all a part of senior schooling. Planning, and making the necessary step from Year 11 Preliminary studies means that students should be consolidating their academic learnings and consider a structure to their lives that transcends the final two years of school.

With academic work scheduled until the final days of the School year, including significant transition meetings for those moving between stages, I urge all students to give their very best until the final bell rings on this most challenging of years.

… and in a reflection on the final two days of Term 3…

We farewelled the Class of 2020 in a quite different yet highly meaningful way given all that this group have endured. The students of Year 12 have walked out the gates of our School for the final time.

And I was very proud of the highly decorous way in which they did so, respecting their School, their families and themselves throughout the final days of their schooling.

For some of the cohort, they began their Pittwater House journey 15 years ago! Whilst parents were not able to be present on Campus, they joined our Valedictory Assembly via Zoom and a fuller version was made available to them later that day where we were able to add some elements not possible under COVID regulations. Of course, traditional elements of our Valedictory Assembly needed to be reworked this year and we hope that the initiatives put in place will form part of a reworked version in the future. Each student was handed a environmentally friendly TPHS bag with their prizes, certificates and a series of letters: from the Governor of New South Wales, the local Member of Parliament, Mr Hazzard, their respective Head of School, from a Year 6 student, and a letter from me.  We trust that these keepsakes will be a wonderful memento for this fine group of young men and women. And we remain hopeful that the concluding Valedictory Dinner scheduled for 20 November will be allowed and just maybe, the current restrictions on events may be further lifted. Our students, their families and the Staff remain hopeful that we can celebrate a truly remarkable journey.

And as I say each year, we live in a cyclical environment. Therefore, as one group is farewelled, we now welcome our new senior students, the Class of 2021. In the Induction Assembly held on the last day of Term 3 and live streamed to parents, and zoomed to the rest of the Secondary School, the new team was invested, and the Prefect body announced:  Girls College - Mali (Head Prefect), Ella (Deputy Head Prefect), Paris (SRC), Lauren and Eve (House Captains Butterworth), Mollie (House Captain Morgan), Shantani (House Captain Orrock), Anfisa (Prefect) and Charlotte (Prefect); Grammar School - Nicholas (Head Prefect), Samuel (Deputy Head Prefect), Xavier (SRC), Thomas (House Captain Morgan), Oscar (House Captain Orrock), Christopher (SUO) and Flynn (Prefect). We wish them well in the significant role they have assumed. In so doing, we encourage the entire cohort to do their personal best in the academic expectations we have for them; additionally, we want each member of the HSC group to be supportive of those around them, and to reach out to all within our family, the Pittwater House family. We want to acknowledge in twelve months, that this group will have left a unique community and provided healthy opportunities and an environment that will serve us well for years to come.

May this be a positive and productive Term for all members of our community.

2020 Valedictory

2021 Prefect Induction

In what has become a tradition, I enjoy recognising the new Student Leaders through this mechanism of HouseNews across Term 4. In the coming weeks, each of the Prefects will share their thoughts with you. They come into their roles with great vigour and a determination to give back to their School that has given them so much; this was a constant message from each in the election process.

Our first article comes from our new Head Prefects Mali in the Girls College and Nick in the Grammar School.

Mali, Head Prefect Girls College

I would like to begin my article, by giving great thanks to those that have given me the opportunity to be Head of the College for 2020/2021. I am extremely grateful and honoured to have been offered this role and look forward to continuing the duties necessary to benefit our schooling environment.

Since my first day at Pittwater House in Year 7, I looked up to the leaders of our School and the kindness which radiated from them. I view our school as a community and appreciate the existing line of communication in which previous leaders have built up. In my leadership interview, I shared a story of a particular leader of the past that inspired me to want to fulfill her role. She possessed the leadership qualities of compassion, strong communication and respect both in and out of the school grounds. Her small acts of care are what truly inspired me to want to become a leader, and I will work hard to create the same impact for others, as she had on me.

I have formed many memories over my years of schooling at Pittwater House that I am not only very grateful for but will also never forget. I have been lucky enough to have participated in a variety of both academic and sporting teams such as: debating, Da Vinci Decathlon, basketball, touch football, and so on. However, I have also been supported by the school through my involvement in charity work, particularly with the organisation ‘Head Above Water’. Both students and teachers within the school have created an amazing support system for me, which I am very thankful for.

When undertaking the process to become a leader, I continuously reflected upon the year ahead of me and the vision I had for not only myself but the entirety of Pittwater House. 2020, has been a difficult year when it comes to face-to-face communication, and the formation of relationships. A way in which I would love to strengthen these skills is through the continuation and enhancement of the ‘College Union Program’, as well as other internal programs to encourage the line of communication within our schooling environment. Nick and I both share the same views when it comes to the importance of opening up and looking after those that are in need of support. With this, we would also love to encourage further charity work within our school, to improve our external local community.

Nick and I greatly admire the determination and hard work, exhibited by the previous years’ leaders, Gracie and Alex. We wish to embody the leadership qualities which they hold, during our time as Head Prefects in order to continue creating a positive environment within the Pittwater House Community. We thank them greatly also, for their support whilst handing over their role to us.

I encourage all students, in particular my fellow Year 12s, to make the most of every opportunity presented to us within the next year, and to constantly remember the power of teamwork. Teamwork is a crucial skill in order to improve communication skills effectively, form long lasting relationships, and make a change within our School. This can be done through being involved in different teams such as sporting, the ‘Student Representative Council’ or even the Environmental Group! Nick and I will work to our fullest potential to put our goals into action and create an engaging schooling atmosphere which students look forward to being a part of.

Nicholas, Head Prefect Grammar School

I am honoured to be offered the role as Head Prefect of the Grammar School for 2021. My immediate thoughts after being elected by Dr Hillier was towards the upcoming year and all the challenges, opportunities and events that I am excited to undertake, overcome and experience alongside Mali and the rest of the Prefect team. Mali and I understand the expectations that these roles hold and will work consistently to fulfill them. My vision for the Class of 2021 is to ensure that everyone within the class accepts and acknowledges their importance and value as senior members of the school. It is vital that everyone knows their worth as a leader. As Head Prefect, I want to make sure each and every one of my peers makes the most out of their last year of school and leaves a positive influence on the Pittwater House community. I would like to say a huge thank you to Alex and Gracie as their leadership over the past year has allowed Mali and I to have a much greater understanding of what the role involves and how to make the most of it.

To me, Pittwater House perfectly entails a community. The close bond between students and members of Staff allows everyone to succeed and thrive within the school environment. The school grounds provide a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that is greatly respected and appreciated by all students.  I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to represent the School that has provided me with so many benefits. I started at Pittwater House in 2016 as a Year 7 student. Since then I have been able to express all my interests through various sporting, academic and creative opportunities provided by Pittwater House.

A key focus of the Prefect team in 2021 is to further establish and develop the relationships between Junior and Senior students. Mali and I have a common goal of making the Pittwater House School grounds as friendly and welcoming as possible. We strive for respect and collaboration amongst all students in order for everyone to thrive. The 2021 prefect team will continue to connect students through previously established programs such as the Big Bro program, College Union groups and the SRC. The SRC program plays a vital part in our goal of connecting Junior and Senior students, allowing relationships to be formed as well as the duty of instructing potential changes within the school. The program is going to become a lot more prominent within our school community in order to encourage the opinions of all students. The SRC will be run by Xavier and Paris who are our 2021 SRC Prefects but will consist of representatives from each individual year group.

Despite the challenges that COVID-19 has brought to the school life of 2020, we are hoping that the restrictions and rules ease so we can resume our full school events such as the carnivals and House Cup.

I am so grateful for all the support that I have had post being elected and have no doubt in my mind that the consistent and valuable help will continue from Dr Hillier, members of staff and fellow students. Mali and I, with the rest of the Prefect team, will work to our fullest potential to ensure that 2021 is a successful year for everybody within our school community.

Virtual Canberra

In a further break from the norm, our Year 6 students are taking their Canberra Tour from our Campus this week. Day 1 saw a range of activities relating to proceedings in the High Court (where they put Spiderman on trial…), Parliament House, and the National Gallery. In lieu of the Games Night which is held on the first evening in Canberra, the students enjoyed a great session of Bubble Soccer in our gym… our local member Mr Jason Falinski will be undertaking a session; he is always very supportive of our students. I am sure this will be a memorable week for the Year 6 cohort.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

U18 Soccer Peninsula Cup

For most of the U18 Grammar Soccer Team this was their final match of the season and the final soccer match of their school career. The week had already been full of excitement and emotion and it was clear that the game would be played with similar enthusiasm. The boys had remained undefeated and were feeling a mixture of confidence and trepidation. Rough tackling and short passes dominated the first few minutes of the game and a particular strong attack on Ben was not well received by the home supporters. Harrison had the first shot on goal which was deflected, leading to a corner in the seventeenth minute. The first goal didn’t materialise until a few minutes later when Liam scored off a pass from Will. There were further opportunities that were not as successful from both sides and Colm, the newly promoted TPHS Goal Keeper, displayed great skill in preventing the opposition from scoring. The second half began with strong mid-field passing from both sides. It was clear that Mater Maria were playing with renewed determination and had couple of chances that were thankfully saved by Colm. In the eighth minute, Liam took possession of the ball, outmanoeuvred several opposing players and scored for the second time. The third goal came a few minutes later when Liam had a shot on target that was deflected but resulted in an own goal having come off an opposing player. The game continued with much excitement and the crowd was not disappointed with the final minutes of entertaining football from our boys. Final score 3-0. Well done boys we are very proud of your title win, Boys Peninsula Cup U18 2020.

With thanks to all the supporters, Mater Maria players, Coach Mr Hegarty and COVID-19 Marshal/Co-manager/Photographer Dr Hillier.
