School Closure Day

Term 3Week 7Monday4th September

From the Principal

A successful Sports Day was had on Thursday last week, with Parsons taking out the Good Sports Shield and Packer taking out the Sports Day shield. We were very lucky with the weather, with the rain stopping just in time.  A change to the program meant that we could go ahead.  Phew! Thanks again to all the families that supported us. There certainly was a positive buzz around the oval and grounds, and it was lovely that so many families were able to stay and support and cheer on their team.

Over the last few weeks, we have been extremely lucky to have received some donations from families to support the running of breakfast club. We are very appreciative of the support of our school community. Thankyou!

The end of the term is almost here, and I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for welcoming me into your community. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to introduce themselves to me in the yard, or while I have been on duty. Dernancourt is a wonderful school community and I am proud to be a part of it. I wish you all a safe and restful break with your families and I look forward to hearing stories of adventures when we return on May 1st.

Julie

On the 30th of March, 7 Dernancourt Students went to Norwood Swimming Centre to compete in SAPSASA Swimming Carnival. They all performed well and some even came away with some ribbons. A big thank you should go out to their parents who transported them and helped organise them on the day as without them the day wouldn't have been possible. We hope to grow the numbers participating again next year.

SAPSASA T20 Cricket

On the 3rd of April the Dernancourt T20 Cricket boys team travelled to Salisbury West Sports Club to compete in the 1st round knockout stages. We played the winner of the first game, which was Rose Park Primary School. We elected to bat first and put a competitive score on the board of 109 from our 20 overs. In the field we started well and had the opposition on the back foot making it hard for them to come back. Rose Park ended up making a competitive 86 runs. Well done to all the Dernancourt boys who played as all were involved throughout the day to help us come out victorious.

Big thank you to Sophie and Umesh for their assistance on the Day as well as Steph as without parent volunteers and staff members to assist these activities can’t go ahead.

Also, a huge thanks to the people of Salisbury West Cricket Club for setting up a pitch and marquees for the day as well as providing ice blocks for all of the students.

Garden Club

Garden Club News

Our busy garden club volunteers in Week 10 were Sophie P5, Brooke P10, Rory P3 , David J4, and Lucas J6. The corn in the garden beds are growing so well they’re even taller than a lot of our children! We were able to pick a couple of corn cobbs for children to take home. A fantastic effort of watering and weeding means our garden beds and Japanese garden are looking in good shape for the upcoming holidays.

SRC NEWS

SRC News

In our SRC meetings in Week 9 we judged the sports day classroom door competition. Well done to all classes for the great effort that was put into this challenge. All teams have already been awarded points towards their sports day tally.

We decided on a theme and charity for our end of term casual day. On the last day of Term 2, children are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation and dress in their favourite sports team colours. Money raised will go to the Salvation Army.

Our school has been selected to be part of the Peace Pole program sponsored by Rotary Club. We discussed possible locations for where our Peace Pole could go so everyone in the community can appreciate it.

Tea Tree Gully Library News

Did you know that Tea Tree Gully Library is the biggest public library in South Australia?  We are lucky to have such a great resource in our local area.

At Dernancourt School we want to encourage all of our students to be readers and access the amazing range of books and audiobook available through our public libraries.  During Term 2 we will be running a challenge for students to join the Tea Tree Gully Library and bring their library card in to show Sue in our school library.  She will then place their name into a raffle and we will draw the winner at the week 3 assembly of Term 2.

Linked here is the School Holiday Program, which offers free or low cost activities:  School holiday program | City of Tea Tree Gully

There is also a wonderful display in the front office for families to find out more about what is offered at the Tea Tree Gully Library.
