School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program

The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program is designed to bring together school communities to develop positive, safe and supportive learning cultures by helping to foster an environment that assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children.  As part of the SWPBS program, a rewards system has been developed to encourage students to always:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

From The Principal: Mark Zimmermann

End of Term 2

Another busy term has come to an end and I am sure that all students, staff and parents are looking forward to a well-earned break.  Yet another short period of remote learning and the re-introduction of restrictions such as the wearing of masks in class has had a noticeable affect on everyone across the school.  In the face of this, all students and staff are to be congratulated for the manner in which they have taken these changes in their stride.  Students in particular have remained remarkably positive despite the cancellation or postponement of a number of camps, excursions and sporting events.  Staff are certainly doing all they can to try and ensure at least some of these events can be re-scheduled for later in the year.  Senior students are also to be commended for their versatility in being able to adapt to modified exam timetables at short notice following our latest lockdown.  And I would also like to thank parents for their understanding following the decision to delay reports until the first week of Term 3 to allow students more time to submit assessments and for staff to be able to finalise these reports over the holidays.  Term 3 is sure to be just as busy, but here's hoping that we can avoid any further restrictions and that no more school activities need to be postponed.  Have a restful and relaxing holiday, stay safe, and I look forward to seeing everyone back for the start of Term 3.

COVID-19 Update

Further changes to restrictions were announced yesterday on the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer.  For regional Victoria, a density limit of 1 person per 2 square metres now applies when indoors.  Metropolitan areas will maintain the density limit of 1 person per 4 square metres.  There has been no change to the advice regarding the wearing of masks or the requirement to use QR Code facilities.  Please take this into consideration if visiting Melbourne over the holidays.

Continued Support from Nhill Supa IGA

Nhill College is extremely grateful for the kind support provided to our school by the local Supa IGA.  Steve Braybrook visited yesterday to present the school with a very generous donation of $1,500.  Thank you to Steve and the Nhill Supa IGA for the ongoing support they provide to Nhill College.

Parents and students are encouraged to view the latest clip prepared by the team at the Resilience Project on the importance of sleep and how to ensure you and your children get enough of it over the coming school holidays...

Nhill College Production

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a school putting on a production in the COVID era will be determined to make it work, no matter what.  And such is certainly the case when it comes to the Nhill College secondary school production of "Pride and Prejudice", a play adapted by Jane Kendall from the Jane Austen novel.

The story follows the Bennett family, and their success (or otherwise) in obtaining suitable matches for each of the five daughters in the family.  Will the sweet Jane, independent Elizabeth, bookish Mary, fretful Kitty and flirtatious Lydia find husbands?  And will their mother ever stop in her frankly embarrassing attempts to match-make them all?!

The cast for this show have been working extremely hard since part-way through term one, and the show is looking fantastic.  Current COVID restrictions have made rehearsing a little more difficult, but the cast have shown they are extremely versatile and resilient.  Throughout the rehearsal period, many laughs have been had, and a few tears shed (mainly from one cast member over the romance between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy!), and we look forward to many more wonderful moments to come.

Tickets for this production are now on sale either at the Nhill College office or through TryBooking: https://www.trybooking.com/BRSIK

Performances to take place at the Nhill Memorial Community Centre, Friday 30th July at 7:30pm, and Saturday 31st July at 2:00pm and 7:30pm.  $20 per adult, $15 per child/concession.

Uniform Reminders

With cooler weather conditions that come at this time of year it is timely to remind everyone of the current winter uniform options available to students.  With the recent addition of a Nhill College jacket, it was decided that students are permitted to wear that jacket - or the similar jackets of the Nhill Sporting Club and Yanac Hockey Club - during class time.  Students are permitted to wear other types of jackets to school, but they will be asked to remove them when they come to class.  Beanies are another item that can be popular with some students at this time of year.  As with all forms of headwear, students are expected to leave them in their lockers during class times.

School Wide Positive Behaviours Program

Nhill College reward system called ROARWARDS has continued this year, with numerous students already receiving ROARWARDS this term. Students receive ROARWARDS by demonstrating Being Respectful, Being a Learner or Being Safe. At both primary and secondary assemblies, all the students that have received a ROARWARD in the past week, were placed in a draw to win a milkshake voucher. Students are randomly drawn by using an electronic spinning wheel. The winners for week 8 were Corey, Deegan and Ethan D. The winners for week 9 were Archie, Elizabeth and Thee Thee.

The primary gotcha prizes went to Tilly, Asher and Pitsanu.

Well done everyone. Keep up the great work and continue to show those positive behaviours in and out of the classrooms.

Reading Awards

Students in Mrs Kerber’s Foundation class are continuing to make excellent progress in their reading of the Magic Coloured Words. The various colours come from the 100 most used word list, which make up around 50% of words read in any given text. Congratulations to Elinor, Matilda and Cailean for their great progress in reading.

Wimmera Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition

Today Alexis, Bailee and Chloe competed in the Wimmera Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award in Horsham. Lexi spoke about the impact of thalidomide and the brave researchers that shaped the future of medical research. Bailee’s prepared speech explored the necessity for more support for Australia’s homeless people, while Chloe examined the need to ban homework for primary school students. They spoke competently with passion and confidence.

The impromptu topic then asked the girls to consider how their families coped with the COVID-19 lockdowns and all three girls spoke well on their experiences with remote learning and lockdowns.

Miss Fould’s accompanied the girls and was extremely proud of their efforts and their willingness to participate in the competition.

MATES4MATES

Funky Sock Friday!

Just a quick reminder that every student from Foundation to Year 12 are invited to wear their funkiest socks on all Fridays! Whether you have pairs of socks with wacky patterns, palm trees on them or brightly coloured designs, so long as it is funky then feel free to wear them on Friday. Students are also requested to bring with them a silver or gold coin which will be donated to the organisation Mates4Mates. They are one of Australia’s leading charities actively changing the lives of current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members, and their families, impacted by service. Australian Defence Force Veterans have already given so much back to us so it’s time we gave back to them.

School Attendance: Every Day Counts

Research shows that the academic and social development of students is affected each day they are absent, and that going to school every day is the single most important part of your child's education.  Following the potential disruptions to the social and academic progress of students caused due to COVID-19 last year, it is more important than ever for children to be at school.

If your child is unwell or absolutely cannot attend school for some reason, it is important to let the school know of their absence and the reason why prior to the day if planned or at the start of the day if the absence is not planned.  The easiest way to do this is via Compass.  Alternatively, you can contact the office at school on 5391 2111.

If your child is absent and we have not been notified, you will receive a text message asking you to contact the school with an explanation.  If we do not receive a reply to our text message, we will be following up with a phone call.

For any questions regarding attendance, please contact Kim Magrath on 5391 2111.

YEAR 11 WORK EXPERIENCE – 12th to 16th JULY, 1st WEEK TERM 3:

Our Year 11 students are all set to go for a week of Work Experience on our first week back of Term 3.  We congratulate our Year 11s on being so adaptable, after having to cancel our annual Work Experience Melbourne Trip a week ago.  Students who had intended on going on this trip had to quickly find alternative Work Experience placements, which they all did so without complaint, and with a ‘can do’ attitude.  We are so fortunate to have wonderful support from so many local businesses in the Wimmera, and our students all have really positive placements ahead of them.

We wish our Year 11s all the best for their week, and look forward to catching up with them throughout their placements.

Well done everyone, and sincere thanks to all our employers.  A full list and further details will be shared in a future edition of our Newsletter.

OPEN DAYS 2021

Universities, TAFES and private colleges will soon be running Open Days for students to attend.  These are a great opportunity for students and parents to see and experience the University Campus (for face-to-face days) and ask lots of questions specific to your needs.  Most Open Days are occurring during early to mid-August, but please check carefully as some may run in July.  Of course, with the uncertainty of Covid many institutions are running both Virtual options and/or Face to Face options.  Arrangements may change at any given time so please ensure you register your intention to attend so they can notify you of any changes and schedules. They may also have limits on numbers attending face-to-face Open Days, so registration will be particularly important this year.

I have attached a condensed list to this newsletter but have issued students with a more detailed list on Compass and in hard copy form.  Also included are some tips and question suggestions to make the most out of the Open Day experience.

Again, please register your intention to attend - even if you are not 100% sure if you plan on attending or not - you will then receive updates and course information.  You can register by logging on to the institution's website.

Please see Mrs Sampson, Mrs Hedt or Mrs Cole if you have any questions regarding Open Days or further study options.

2021 BYOD News: Edunet Specifications Sheet for Parents

The shift to remote learning last year led to significant changes to our traditional methods of providing students who don't have BYODs with access to school laptops.  These arrangements will stay in place for this year, which is fantastic for all those families who do not have a BYOD, as we are committed to ensuring that that this provision will be available in 2021.  However, there will be one major change to the borrowing arrangements this year.  Those students who do not have a BYOD, will not be permitted to take their school allocated laptop home with them each night and will be required to return them to the charging station in the library at the end of the day.  This will help us to avoid any damage in transit between school and home, as well as acting as an incentive for families to consider a BYOD that can be used at home as well as at school.

To assist those families interested in exploring BYOD options, we have new and updated models for our BYOD program through Edunet.  Please open the attachment below for details about the devices.  Mr Shrive is happy to take questions from parents or students if they are looking at purchasing a BYOD.

The online ordering portal is accessible via http://nhillcollege.technologyportal.com.au  The Access Code you will need to access the portal is NC2021

A video explaining the benefits of using Edunet can also be found here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bWjEs_iA58

Welcome to Facebook

Last year we successfully trialled a Nhill College Facebook page to help us promote school events and activities with the wider community.  We will continue to use Compass, our web page and the weekly newsletter to keep families associated with the school up to date with all of the events and activities that occur in and around the school each week.  However, our Facebook page has allowed us to broaden exposure to the school and reach a number of people who may not have otherwise had access to our formal communication channels.  Our Facebook page will continue to be purely for promotion, publicity and to inform everyone of the upcoming events and happenings within the College.  All notes, questions, concerns or communication to staff regarding students still need to be directed to the College via Compass or on (03) 5391 2111.  To find our Facebook page, simply follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/nhillcollege/ or type Nhill College in the search function on Facebook. (Please be aware there is also an unofficial Nhill College facebook page that does not show the Nhill College logo).

Please like/follow the page and then you will be kept up-to-date with all of our posts.

Access to Nhill College Newsletter

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter.  However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass.  The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au.  Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it.  Spread the word!
