St Pat's News

May 13, 2020

At St Patrick’s Parish Primary School we hold the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of our school.

Dear Parents, Parishioners, Carers, Staff & Students,

We now have a “roadmap” for the resumption of onsite schooling. What I share below may already be familiar to you from media reports. Finer details for our local situation will be worked out over the next week and you will be informed of these in next week’s newsletter.

Return to Onsite Schooling

Following advice from the Chief Health Officer, the Victorian Government and the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) have advised that schools can begin a phased return to onsite schooling. In the first stage, students in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 will return to school from Tuesday 26 May.

To support all school staff to prepare for this transition, Monday 25 May will be a pupil-free day.

In the second stage of our return to onsite schooling, all other year levels will return to school from Tuesday 9 June.

For those students (Yrs 3-6) who cannot be supervised at home, the existing model of onsite schooling will remain in place during the two-week period from Tuesday 26 May to Tuesday 9 June. The current process that we are using to enable parents and carers to indicate the days or part-days for which onsite schooling is required, will continue for this two-week period.

Team Planning Days

Our teaching teams will each have a planning day this week in preparation for Term 3. The teachers will not be as accessible to students and parents on these days so there may be a delay in responses to emails and messages. The schedule for planning days is:

F-2 Team - Wednesday 13th May

3/4 Team - Thursday 14th May

5/6 Team - Friday 15th May

Report Writing Day

As advised earlier, Friday 29th May is a pupil-free day. This is to enable teachers to work on Semester 1 student reports. Reports will be available to parents through PAM from 4:00pm on Friday 19th June. There will be some changes to the reporting format in light of our remote learning this term. These changes will be shared with you in the coming weeks.

Principal Vacancy

I would like to let you know that, in collaboration with the Catholic Education Office, Fr John Fitzgerald will commence the process to employ a new Principal for our school in 2021.

The first part of this process will be to advertise the position on Friday 15th May. The advertising is normally for a period of 4 weeks.

In that time our local Educational Consultant, Lee Schlooz, will conduct surveys with our staff, SAC, parents and some of our students to gather information from our community to inform the sort of Principal we are looking for. Fr John will also bring together a panel that will interview the candidates for the position and ultimately appoint a new Principal.

I will keep you informed of any further developments

 Annual Report to School Community

The 2019 Annual Report to the School Community is now available on our school website under the Community tab.

Attendance Records

I remind parents that we are still required to keep attendance records of students whether they are working at home or at school. We will mark every student present unless notified by parents through PAM that their children will not be doing school work because of illness or other reason on that day.

Enrolments 2021

The period for accepting enrolments for our 2021 Foundation classes is Monday 1st June to Friday 19th June. We had planned to have a Parent Information Evening on Tuesday 26th May at 7.30pm. This has been postponed until further notice. Information will be forwarded to families of children attending Port Fairy Community Services Centre through Storypark.

Kind regards,

Peter Sanderson

Principal

Wellbeing

Maintaining Kid's Mental Health

As the weeks go on you may notice a change in the emotions of your children as well as yourself. I think the realisation that remote learning will continue has had a part to play in this. Children are very social. The disconnection from friends, family, school and sporting routines may have evoked a sense of loss in some children. This loss may be a feeling that some children have never experienced before, they may be struggling with how to attend to this emotion.  The use of internet visual connection platforms has helped to ease this sense of loss. I know I look forward to seeing and talking to my class on google meet!  Michael Grose addresses these concerns and has some valuable strategies in the following article -  Maintaining Kids' Mental Health during the Caronavirus Pandemic.

Child Friendly News Sites

With so many changes taking place across Australia, it may be important to encourage parents/teachers to engage their children through 'kids friendly' news as a distraction from COVID 19.
