Reynella Primary School Grapevine

Term 3, Week 10 | 2022

From the Leadership Team

Even though this term has been exceptionally busy with numerous opportunities for our students to shine, I think we are all looking forward to a restful and relaxing break with the term 3 holidays just around the corner.

On Thursday September 15, fifteen of our year 5 and 6 students represented Reynella PS and performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music. Our school was also represented by Jasmine C who was a soloist on the night.

The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, and is custodian of an iconic South Australian tradition, we engage our students in artistic excellence, cultural diversity and social inclusion through performance in Music and the Arts.

This year the Festival’s 9 concerts feature Year 5 and 6 students. To commemorate this significant change, Annie Kwok wrote the song “Who Knows?”.

This year we commissioned Dan Walker to compose a set of four songs entitled “The Space Between Us”. It is not just about the space that exists above our heads, but the space all around us.

During the concerts there were a number of Guest Artists from public primary and secondary schools, other choir items that presented different musical genre, and two pieces that specifically showcased the talents of the orchestra.

It was a spectacular event that our students enjoyed being a part of.

Last Monday, 25 of our Year 3 and 4 students performed onstage in the Festival Theatre. They did a traditional Malaysian floor routine with the choir for the song “Wau Bulan”. These students have been rehearsing at school and at home for nearly 2 terms, giving up many recesses and lunches.

All of these students have shown great dedication and commitment to the Arts and superbly represented Reynella Primary School.

Wednesday September 21 was the highlight of the school year for all our students at RPS. Our STEM showcase: Reynella Relief Project was open for all to visit! What an outstanding effort from our students who acted as scientists and engineers to create new and innovative ways to help people and animals under changing climactic conditions. A precis of the showcase can be found further into this newsletter.

Last Friday, September 23 was our Run 4 Fun event – postponed due to COVID – it was great to see all the community come together with staff and students to raise money for our school and most importantly have a lot of ‘fun’. There can be no greater joy for a student than watching their teacher being unceremoniously dunked! Thank you to all the children who raised an astonishing $17,200.00 .

For these great events to happen there is a lot of hard work done behind the scene; much of which is invisible and takes a lot of time outside of school hours. Our staff need to be acknowledged for their continued support of our students and special acknowledgements must go to:

o   Elizabeth McDonald for her tireless efforts in enabling and supporting our students to participate in such rich Arts opportunities

o   Matt Simmons and the STEM Action Team for their extraordinary efforts and passion in facilitating our Reynella Relief Project.

o   Kay Starczak and the Fundraising Team for their efforts in coordinating the Run 4 Fun.

o   The brave staff members who volunteered to be dunked!

o   Our teaching staff, who continue to go above and beyond to provide our students with learning opportunities that are authentic and challenging for all.

There is much to look forward to in term 4, Sports Day, End of Year Concert and Graduation; as well as the many other excursions and activities our students will be involved in – the time will pass quickly I am sure. But for now, enjoy the holiday break with your friends and families and we look forward to seeing you all again next term.

EXTERNAL REVIEW

As part of our continuous school improvement process, we will be involved in an external school review with a Department for Education review team.

The purpose of external school reviews is to support us to raise achievement, sustain high performance and provide quality assurance to build confidence in public schools.

All public schools are generally externally reviewed every 3 years.

The focus of the external school review is to evaluate our school’s performance. The review team includes a review officer and one or more review principals. Our school review will occur on 31/10/2022 – 01/11/2022.

The review team will identify aspects of our school’s improvement that have been verified through the review processes, as well as the improvements that we need to make in the future.

During the external school review, some students, parents, governing council members and staff will be asked to provide information to the review team in a number of ways. These include:

• group discussions (with students or staff or parents)

• meetings (governing council, staff meeting)

• visits into classrooms.

We appreciate everyone’s support and time in helping us with this external school review process.

If you do not want your child to participate in this process please let the front office know, in writing.

If you would like more information, please contact Michele Russell, 83811493

CLASS PLACEMENT 2023

The class placement process for 2023 has begun. We aim to arrange class groupings that optimise the learning needs of our students and uses to full advantage the resources, skills and teaching styles of staff members. In order to form classes for 2023 it is important that we estimate our 2023 student enrolment numbers as accurately as possible. If your child will not be attending Reynella Primary School next year, please let the front office know, ASAP. If you have a child due to start school next year who is not yet enrolled, please enrol them now. Alternatively, if you know of someone who is considering sending their child/children to our school could you please encourage them to make contact with us very soon.

Placing students in class groups is a complex process, which takes staff many weeks to work through. It is about creating a group of students with gender balance, a range of learning abilities and behavioural and social needs in each class. Factors such as social dynamics, which children to keep together and who would be better apart, social and emotional maturity, and even physical size are all considered when making class groups.

We have a very strong team of excellent teachers and we expect that wherever your child is placed, there will be learning success. Most parents are happy to leave this process to the class teachers. We anticipate that many classes next year will be composite due to the increasing needs of the students. Research, which has been predominantly conducted in primary schools, suggests there is no discernible difference between composite and straight grade classrooms in terms of academic performance. However, benefits relating to student independence, responsibility, resilience and study habits have been highlighted. Some say composite classrooms are more flexible; allow children to work at their own pace; offer a wider range of friendship opportunities; and encourage more co-operation and tolerance. It is the quality of teaching, combined with student interest and engagement that are considered important factors contributing to student success rather than class structure.

CLASS PLACEMENT PROCESS

Teachers provide information on the social, emotional, behavioural and academic needs of students. Students are asked to give input on their preferred friendship groups. Some parents may wish to draw our attention to their child’s learning needs; academic, social and emotional and any other confidential information which could have an impact on their child’s class placement. We ask that parents do not request specific teachers or make friendship requests unless you believe your child needs to be separated from others to optimize their learning. We will consider all requests but cannot guarantee that they will be fulfilled and ask that parents trust this process.

We are confident that teacher appointments will be finalised before the end of the year. Once classes are finalised, placement changes will not be made except if there are enrolment variations or staff changes. If you would like to submit information for the class placement process please collect a form, available from the Front Office and return it filled in no later than Friday 4 November. Alternatively, you may complete the Skoolbag eForm.

The Reynella Relief Project

Our 2022 whole-school inquiry showcase, the Reynella Relief Project, was a proud moment for our school. We cannot take for granted the privilege of coming together as a community to celebrate learning in this way. Throughout this project, our students have demonstrated an abundance of curiosity, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. Many of you have expressed your admiration for teachers, who go above and beyond to design such rich learning opportunities for children. We thank everyone who helped make the showcase a spectacle, shining a light on the enormous effort from our students.

While showcasing an array of climate-related solutions, we also managed to raise hundreds of dollars for WIRES - Australia's largest wildlife rescue organisation. Our citizenship action team would like to thank the community for their generous donations.

Learning with C7

In C7 this term we learnt to improve our writing of persuasive texts. Mrs Patterson worked with us on this Mondays during our writing lessons.

Our main focus this term was on our inquiry. We learned about climate change, renewable resources and how they could benefit us and help towards climate change. We looked at wind power and designed and made our own wind turbines using the design process.

EMPATHISE                DISCOVER                 IDEATE                CREATE                IMPROVE

We did lots of learning in Math about Data. We learned how to measure wind speed using an anemometer and then graphed our data.

We had lots of fun and great learning opportunities.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Bailey for raising the most money towards our Colour Explosion School Run 4 Fun fundraiser 🙌 Thank you for raising a whopping $1640.60 that has gone towards building our new STEM outdoor learning area 🤩

Bailey has now gone the draw to win a JB Hi-fi $10,000 shopping spree from @Australian Fundraising

The prize will be drawn at the end of the year. Good luck 🍀

Run 4 Fun

What a fantastic day and a wonderful effort from all of our Reynella Community.

SAPSASA Overview

SAPSASA Boys’ Football

On Thursday June 30, interested Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Woodcroft College to represent ReynellaPS in the Statewide Schools Football competition against Woodcroft Primary School and the host school, Woodcroft College. The large and ferocious storm the night before, made for a very muddy and slippery playing surface, despite the warm and sunny conditions on the day.

Our first-up game was against the strong and well-balanced Woodcroft College team. We were well in the battle at quarter time. Unfortunately, Woodcroft put in a strong second quarter, breaking the game open and they were just that bit too strong for us; taking the victory 48 to 8.

The boys were a little dejected after that game, but were positive and ready for the next challenge. The boys really gelled as a team in the second game, with some amazing displays of ball movement culminating in a few incredible snaps at goal. We ran out 122 – 13 winners against Woodcroft Primary School.

The boys were exceptionally well behaved and represented the Reynella guernsey with pride.

SAPSASA Boys’ Basketball

Earlier this term a selected team of 8 boys travelled to Morphett Vale Basketball Stadium to take part in the southern region SAPSASA Basketball Carnival. What an amazing carnival it was. Basketball has exploded in recent years, and it showed here, with some amazing talent on display and incredibly hard fought games between all the schools. We finished 5th, but just as easily could have been playing for top spot, if a few results went our way. Scores as follows:

Gm1: Flagstaff 20 vs Reynella 15

Gm2: All Saints 15 vs Reynella 24

Gm3: McLaren Vale 24 vs Reynella 17

Gm4: Victor Harbour 15 vs Reynella 14

Gm5 (3rd final): All Saints 9 vs Reynella 34

SAPSASA Southern Valley Athletics

Renovations at SA Athletics Stadium meant a change of location for our annual athletics meet for 2022. This year we all travelled to Reynella East College who kindly offered to host and allow us to use their incredible facilities. All Reynella students competed extremely well and represented the school with pride, with some earning themselves placings in their events:

Ryder – 2nd 12yr high jump

Callum - 2nd 11yr discus

Tauriian – 3rd 12yr 800m

Mikaela  – 1st 10yr discus and 4th representing the Southern Valley at the state meet.

Blayke  – 3rd 11yr long jump, 1st 200m and 4th 200m representing Southern Valley at the state meet.

Laila  – 2nd 10yr 100m, 1st 200m and 1st shot put. 3rd shot put representing Southern Valley at the state meet.

Kai  – 2nd 12yr discus

Eddie  – 2nd 11yr discus

Library Helpers

Thank you to the following parents who have been helping out with library book covering for many years: Vicky Davey, Carly Chandler and Barbara Ferguson. Barbara also unpacks and sorts all of the Scholastic Book Club orders we receive each term. A thank you also to Rebecca Holdstock and Vicki Reynolds who have been able to help out with covering books this year.

If you are interested in covering on a regular basis or occasionally please let Sharon or Wolf know as we can always do with extra help. You do not need to be in the library to do this. We can leave a bag of books and contact at the front office for you to take home and complete.

Hats

Staff are currently trialing a new process for wearing hats this term. Each morning classes will be checking the BOM for the predicted UV rating for the day. If, at any time, the UV rating is going to be over 3, children will need to wear a hat at both recess and lunch time.

Hats, if needing to be worn, must always be worn on the oval – even if it is windy.

If children do not have a hat they must sit under the verandahs near Carew, Kaurna, Morphett and Reynell, or the Cola.

Drink Bottles

With the warmer weather hopefully approaching in term 4 please ensure you send you child to school with a named drink bottle filled with water.
